I have a 2003 2500hd with 88,000 miles and when every I go over a bump at slow speeds (less the 15mph) I hear a clunk in the front. I have tried the method of moving the steering shaft up and down to redistribute the grease and that didn't work. I looked under the truck and couldn't find anything obvious. I don't think it is steering related because I don't feel it in the wheel I feel it in the floor.

Take wheels off, check and see if you can shake brake calipers by hand. If so replace rubber hardware.

Every time I had any vehicle that I could feel a clunk through the floorboard was a loose shock mount or bad shock bushing.

someone suggested that it might be a blown shock causing the problem. I am the second owner of the truck and I know that the previous owner didn't replace them so they are the originals. I was looking into getting some bilstein 5100 shocks all around. I haven't lifted it or cranked the t bars but I would like to lift the front maby an inch or inch and a half.

'03 Silver, if your shocks are original, it's probably them. My bushings looked bad,and I checked everything else, even let it develop more looking for the problem. With the bang I was getting it was hard to believe shocks, but they were old, so changed 'em. Cured it.

Hope you have same luck.

They are original to the truck the truck and it rides like garbage so I think they are shot. Even if it isn't the source of the clunk at least the truck will ride smother.

Just got a set of Bilstein 4600 (the blue & yellow ones) from Summit for just under $300/shipped and they're going on today...I was told the shiny-body 5100 series are too firm for street driving and are better suited for off-road.

Interesting I like the 5100 because I am thinking about leveling it a little so the 5100 would allow me to. And the 5100 are a bit cheaper then the 4600 for my truck.

I like the Rancho 9000XLs because they are adjustable, so you can play with them a bit instead of just being a pass-fail kind of thing. I don't plan on altering the adjustment, but it help when I first installed them on my '04 Sierra 3500.

I had initially set both the front and back to the softest setting, as the truck rides pretty stiff, particularly when empty, but then the front end would bounce a couple of times over bumps. Turned the fronts up to 5, no more bouncing.

And Rancho periodically has a 4 for 3 sale...

$110 a shock is a bit much for my price range maby if a 4 for 3 deal pops up I might but I can get the bilsteins for around $250 for all 4.
