Say what, what evidence??? I am on my second 2014+ DI engine truck and have yet to see any oil consumption issues. The engine in the 2014+ trucks is a completely new design from the previous generation engines, not one part was transferred over into the new DI engines.

How many miles do you keep a truck for? 200,000+ is how long I keep mine for. The achilles heel of DI os carbon build up on intake valves.

 

The 6.0 is still IDI, a safer bet imho.

How does AFM have anything to do with carbon buildup?

AFM has nothing to do with carbon buildup and DI has nothing to do with oil consumption.

 

Point being that now that Chevy has addressed the oil burning problem in the AFM aluminum 5.3s, these newer engines now incorporate DI which by design has a track record of causing carbon deposits on valves. Perhaps GM's additional change to sodium filled valve stems will mitigate the problem - maybe not.

 

Point being that just as more frequent changes of oil in unmodified pre 1/2011 AFM engines, rather than relying upon the engine killing DIC, might reduce oil ring deposits and cause oil burning - the use of top tier gasoline with superior additive packs might help to reduce combustion buildup on the valves in new DI engines.

I understand all of that. My reply was based on williambros response that Carbon build up was an issue on these engines, therefore opt to disable afm or get a 6.0. I don't think the op was asking about carbon buildup on GDI engines, rather if afm and oil consumption were mutually exclusive. I think it has been clearly proven that GM resolved the oil consumption issues with the redesign. Carbon buildup has nothing to do with the topic at hand.

My point was for the miles I put on a truck I am not going to entertain the thought of oil use or having to get valves cleaned of carbon. A 2500 with a 6.0 solves the issue for me. My 04 5.3 never used a drop of oil, my current truck does not use any, not going to buy a truck with fuel saving gimmicks that may or may not work and cause issues over the long haul.

You might be SOL with all manufacturers gravitating to some sort of fuel savings. My 5.3 with afm has not used any oil, i sleep well at night using a can of CRC intake valve cleaner every oil change. The issurs presented are vastly overstated.

I like what Ford is doing with the ecoboosts to help offset the 5.0 and no afm whatsoever. Toyota is not using it either. GM could easily follow suit with the 3.6 TT.

 

I will be watching the posts here, but am willing to sacrifice mpg to not have issues.

 

I agree that the OLM is a bigger enemy to the engine.

I agree.....GM will likely go this way with a 3.6l EcoTec twin scroll turbo or dual turbo engine with more alloy and composites in the chassis to reduce weight. Their current 2.0T dual scroll turbo engine with DI/VVT/high compression puts out 250 hp in the Malibu and 265 hp in the Caddy and Camaros at 26 mpg without using gimmicks like start/stop and AFM. Less hp than the 3.6l in my Camaro but just as quick having a better hp/weight ratio.GM touts these smaller,lighter engines as energy dense and even offers them as crate engines for dropping in custom cars. Engines are just as happy to run on regular as premium grades, but with some power loss.

After seeing that 3.6 Camaro only .5 second slower than the Hellcat, I'd love to see a dual turbo version or twin scroll in the 1500.

Another trick is to throw a can of seafoam into the crankcase with 150 miles until your next oil change and let that oil work its way through your block and intake valves. Ford is adding a port injector to each cylinder on the next 3.5 ecoboost to rinse off the valves which is a step in the right direction for GDI concerns. Again, there is no empirical evidence that the new ecotecs burn oil regularly or suffer from extreme valve coking. As it stands all of this bunk is merely personal conjecture. A range AFM disable tool, a catch can and a little preventive maintenance will alleviate your concers with these engines. Unfortunately for you GM is not going back to port injection and removal of AFM from here on out, in fact GM just invested in new AFM software for the next batch of trucks and SUVs. As you said, you might be restricted to a diesel or Toyota for your next ride. A few less mpg will not bother me.

 

 

So aside from regular oil changes, which I do at a set mileage by ignoring the OLM, what else do you do on these DI afm engines?

Nothing other than a can of CRC and a can of seafoam on the crank.

 

Thankfully the 6.0 gas engine is still IDI and has no afm. Plus the HD trucks have some things I prefer over the 1500's.

Who advocates throwing a liquid bottle of Gumout in their Crankcase? Completely Retarded, Utter Nonsense! Wow-it smokes! Really? I don't even want to know what the thought process is for throwing a bottle of SEAFOAM into a gasoline vehicle engine........................

    • I have a `25, 1500 that auto sets on incline. Never knew that at first. I have the electronic shifter. Just think if it didn`t do that? Unlike a mechanical shift that you can muscle out of park, how would you get this thing out? That would be a problem.   What I found out later is, I don`t have to push the button to release. Just put it in gear.   Setting parameters? Don`t know if it`s possible.

I usually set the parking brake (habit) when on flat ground for typical driving.    When backed down on the launch ramp to launch the boat and I place gear selector into Park, the parking brake activates automatically. My second nature is to set parking brake manually and noticed I was turing the parking brake off.  The parking brake appears to be setting itself automatically.   I looked all over my owner's manual and only found references to being on an incline and manually setting parking brake, or at times parking brake will be auto engaged, but nothing specific to my situation.    When is the parking brake automatically engaged?  Under what specific circumstances?  Can the auto set parameters be changed?     I like the auto set feature.  It would be nice if always engaged when shifted into Park and released when shifted out of Park (like my wifes 2025 RAV4).   Thanks!

Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
    • Can it still be Assembled II?   Viscosity on the decline by various means. Heat on the rise making that worse. Engine RPM in the tank. Smaller motors with more boost trying to emulate an electric motor. Full torque, zero rpm. Then we will triple the OCI. Argh.    But wait....there is more. LSPI has pushed a shift from Ca to Mg and as that cost more PLUS the run to lower sulfur compounds the TBN is moving in the wrong direction for the increased OCI's demanded.    That not being enough to placate a demand for a parameter they can't measure the other sulfur bearing compounds are also under attack. That would be zinc and phosphorus sulfonate compounds. To some degree those are being replaced with boron esters and others, i.e. titanium ect. All of which have shorter service lives. And there there is the "Secrete Sauce" marketing for AW adds that 'Can't be detected by UOA's" but trust me because I (the blenders) never ever lie.    Spoiler alert; ALL additives are sacrificial! Smaller amounts of the old blended with less robust versions of the new do not equal longer service lives. So what are the blenders recommending? Wait for it.......   MOVING THE GOAL POSTS! OMG      Let's declare the long standing TAN/TBN crossover irrelevant and tell people that soot is a great 'graphite' based lubricant which can aid tribo films. Wait, what? Let's declare that the standards used for oxidation and nitration were to conservative and can be expanded. Let's tell them that because GDI fuel dilution, although being a VISCOSITY KILLER and an acid generator is actually okay because we have better base oils that limit viscosity failure limits. (Said knowing this is measured in fractions of a centipoise and in bases not commonly used in shelf oils)   Lying from the heart is not just the new normal but we have a public, a very young public, that is so ignorant of the facts and so sure of their "RESEARCH" into AI driven models base in regurgitated  instead of scientific research based unvarnished, peer reviewed FACTS that the incoming guard is loosing their grip on reality and the OEM's are tickled pink while the blends bend the knee.    You have an ever limited set of tools to work with. And sooner or later those will be taken from you as the API and the EPA strangle the last remaining fluids from the system. What you have left is your wits. If you care to use them.    At some point in the very near future it will not longer be possible to do "What is best for the machine", and be replaced with "The best you have access too". You WILL be rewarded with half the life and twice the cost. That isn't that hard to predict.         
    • I trust you saw the other comment where he knew what he was talking about !. Yes, these darned newer vehicles with all their so smart they are stupid technology, goes and drains the battery down. As you might see my other comment, I installed a Noco 5 battery tender under the hood and at this point still have the cord routed so I have to lift the hood and then plug it in but am typically parked in a garage or a shed so its not risking the engine hood in the wind. That way I am assured or hopefully so of not finding I have a battery drawn down and can't even start the truck and that also damages the battery to draw it down too far.
