Total @21. On the hwy just normal driving 23 may little better. Hard to believe how smooth the engine runs. My last GMC was a 2014 5.3 6 speed drove it 55000 before traded in on this one. Only problem with the 14 was a small coolant leak that GM took care of. This one feels much more refined did not appreciate the tail gate when I first bought but really find it handy. Happy camper so far.

I would love 21 mpg, I am lucky to get 15! Truck only has 1000 miles, I am hoping it get better over the next couple thousand.

I'm looking to buy myself a new 1500. I'd optimistically like to keep it for ~15 years, which should be around 100k miles, given how much (little) I typically drive. Reliability/ durability/ longevity tend to be my highest priority, though capability and fuel economy are important, too.

It will be a daily driver as I don't have space for three vehicles. We want to get an ultra light travel trailer - thinking somewhere in the ~24 foot range - so probably towing that a few times a year (including at least once over the Rockies each year) and hauling camping gear, propane, fuel for my dad's boat, etc. The occasional run to Home Hardware. In terms of off roading, I don't anticipate taking it anywhere I don't currently take my car.

Thanks for your help/ input. This is a tough decision. I just missed the window to buy myself a new K2 with the features I wanted (e.g. NHT) and now I'm not sure if a T1 will be the best choice for me or not.

Capt...

I'm not so sure that you're out of luck finding a K2. If you do search for onw I would suggest that you invest in the 6.2 engine. It's about a $2500 msrp upgrade nut if you're looking to pull a 24' trailer it's money well spent.

Try a local dealer and have him do a USA search for all vehicles that come close in spec to what you want. It may make for a fun road trip picking it up.

I did something similar when searching for my 1972 Triumph GT6 which I picked up last year.

If you do end up with a 2020 or 2021 T1, you may avoid some of the problems us early adopters are experiencing

Oh ... VERY IMPORTANT in my opinion any way  .. Invest in having the undercarriage rust proofed. GMs are notorious for RUST

I did ask my local dealership to look for a 2018 Sierra or Silverado with NHT for me back in July and they claimed they were unable to find anything. Then I drove 200 miles to look at the only one I could find on this side of the country through searching the internet only to discover that it had been damaged and had $6k of body panels replaced.

Since I need a new truck, any thoughts on what it would be?

if you buy a k2 MAKE SURE YOU TEST DRIVE AT HIGHWAY SPEED. Sometimes the chevy shake happens right off the lot. If it does it run away as fast as you can.

My situation was different than most. I was self employed. I would have my 92 and a 3/4 ton Chevy. Wouldn’t have to be new.

I thought about looking for a GMT-900, either a 1500 with the 5.3 or a 2500 with the 6.0, but I doubt the fuel economy would be any better than a Tundra and I don't trust others to maintain their vehicles well. Guys around here don't seem to sell their trucks until there's nothing left to repair.

The wife was mad at me for getting that truck I was looking at in July up to 75 mph in a 60 zone but I informed her it was a crucial part of the test.

you got to hop on the highway and slowly increase the speeds starting at 60. I loved my 16 but had to off it because it was shaker and GM said it was normal.

Yeah, need the opportunity to do a nice long test drive. I hope next time I don't get the salesman who says "I'm not saying no but..." then proceeds to explain why he's saying no to my request for an extended test drive or whatever it is.

I just ran another search and found a new K2 that looks like it meets all my requirements except for having a front bench seat instead of buckets, which I can live with. The only issue is it's a 36 hour drive away. Now how do I ask my local dealership to bring it in for me in such a way that they'll actually say yes instead of trying to force me into a 2020?

No need to justify anything to a salesman, you're the one behind the wheel and the reason he is employed by the dealer is because his time is yours. I've taken dozens of test rides in the same models but equipped differently and bought nothing. I take test drives at night....and they don't have to come along either ; I've taken many by myself. Next time a salesman give you grief all you have to do when you return to the dealer; see the manager and explain you wish to take a proper test drive if they expect you to spend the bucks and that may require him to assign another salesman.

I would never go back to this particular dealership based on everything I saw there. My local dealership, on the other hand (which also happens to be where my company gets a bunch of our trucks from) is awesome. Largest dealership on this side of the country (or so they claim). They own both GMC and Chevy dealerships and most salesmen are able to sell both brands. I told them I definitely wasn't buying a 2019 SLE they had and they still threw the keys at me and told me to bring it back the next day. (Though maybe they were planning to strip my car and sell it for parts while I was gone. ?) The only downside was them trying to convince me to buy the 2019 because they "knew" there was "no way" GM would be putting the 10 speed in any 2020s with the 5.3...

Cpl .....

Why not speak with the offering dealer, even though he is 36 hours away.

;Let him know where you're located and ask what sort of DEAL he'd be willing to cut you.

Your local dealer probably couldn't offer you as good of a deal as the posted truck.

Local dealer would have to pay for transport and then some.

If the offering dealer comes up with a GREAT deal, make an extended weekend trip with the wife or girlfriend .... may be both (((( chuckle ))))

The trip back would make a fabulous test drive.

By the way, $55K does NOT sound like a great deal.

I picked up my 2019 Sierra 1500 with the SLT Plus Package and the X-31 setup ... I paid $52K plus taxes.

MSRP Sticker was a little over $62K

    • I did the new thermostat after doing a 'flip' for a year. Runs as cool one way as the other in the summer but in the winter there is a bit of a floor. Yellow with the new 70 C thermostat. My data over the life of the unit to date. Still need more cooler. Anyway that floor helped both winter fuel economy and shift quality in the winter. I found it a good balance.
    • Evan Williams Bottled in Bond   So pouring the last of a bottle of Evan Williams Black label last night I set off the the state store for a refill only to be denied the by an empty shelf. Rats.    What the did have was a bottle of Evan Williams Bottled in Bond. 100 proof. Hum, a few bucks more but a known distiller. Lets have a swing at it. ( I have before )    Cracked it open and pour a serving over ice. Hum.... more heat, yes. More alcohol naturally. But the barreling not the proof brings the taste and this one came up short.    Oh is was familiar but the heat ran the barrel over like a Peterbilt runs over a squirrel. Could use a heavier toasting of the oak me thinks or perhaps a longer barreling. Who knows. But what I can say is ice or a water back isn't the answer. What kills one kills them both. Sad. It is a pleasant drink....if you have little to compare it to.
    • I've had exactly one set of Bridgestone. Lasted five year and 125,000 miles and had I known better 15oK would have been a cake walk. I would have bought a like set had they not tripled in price since the first set. I removed them at said mileage with 5/32" remaining in dead even wear all four. They were fuel efficient, quite, comfortable and predictable.    Early on I got a very good alignment checked at least once a year, sometimes twice; kept the tires properly inflated, balanced and rotated. And I've found that many a tire issue can be avoided with great maintenance practices. Lot's of tire dealers will do rotation and balance (simple) for free for as long as you own the tire they sold you so no excuse not to.    Bead prep, alloy integrity and stem health have a huge impact on inflation stability. There are more mountings done poorly that perfectly. Finding a good tire guy is gold and as important as finding a tire you like.    That 3X price increase now two sets of "other tires' later is starting look like a bargain.      Bad maintenance kills more tires than bad tires.
    • Atlas, you kill me As aggravating as a project like this can be you have been unable to hide your fascination with learning and using that angst against this beast like a Ninjitsu Master. It amuses you, admit it now.      BTW, love your writing style. 😉
    • I gotta say, I'm enjoying your narration. The troubles you've been having are amusing as you describe them. It's good to see that you're finally getting some satisfaction out the old beast though.
