Just another point to mention, if your tires are improperly balanced and you drive on them for a while, they will start to wear unevenly. Once they wear unevenly, you will never get rid of the vibration until you get a new set of tires. I had this problem with a set of tires before. They were never right and just replaced them after 30k miles.

 

How many people here complaining have never owned a truck before? Put 500lbs of weight in the bed and tell us if the vibration goes away.

 

I had a 2007 silverado that rode smooth like a cadillac before this one and that has been my basis of comparison for a lot of my issues. I haven't tried weight in the bed yet but un-weighted my old truck rode like a car.

 

I agree with you on the tire wear issue and the tires ever riding correctly at this point. I'm debating getting an alignment at an independent shop before things get worse. I really don't want to spend the money for new tires right now. If that solves the problem then I would just tough these out for a year or 2 before dropping the money, but it's tough to know for sure if it's the tires. I would like to rule out mechanical items in the front end like ball joints or tie rod ends or whatever.

Got an appointment on Friday to get an alignment done at a specialty tire place. I'm going to start there and take my side mechanic's advice.

New Terra grapplers on my newer 14 = vibration completely gone! My old 14 was definitely a drivetrain issue, but my new one turned out to be shitty Goodyear SRA tires. I figured before I take the driveshaft out to make sure the tires were good. Shitty Goodyear tires again.

Hot damn! Happy for you Bowtie! What were the vibration symptoms of your first truck, and the ones of this truck? Even though I have new tires on mine, it might be a tire issue, who knows. Thanks in advance.

Yeah can you compare your symptoms to those in posts #1603, 1604, and 1611 (they are within the last few pages of this thread). I really believe my issue is my tires but I don't want to drop $800-$1,000 to find out either.

 

Also Bowtie what is the manufacture date of your current truck? Should be on the sticker located inside the driver door.

Vibrations between 45-50, 72+, and upon hard acceleration bad. I pretty much felt it all the time but those were the worst speeds.

Dealer balanced tires 1/2 dozen times.

Replaced 2 tires

3 different drive shafts

Tires off another Chevy on the lot

New rear end

Engine shims

And never solved it...

Dealer bought the truck back

Very minor vibration 68 or so +

-Tire pressure was too high and I reduced to 32 and made a tremendous difference.

-I put 500 lbs of sand in the bed and no difference.

-I rotated the tires and vibs moved from back to front.

-Bought new tires and vibration completely gone. This thing is as smooth as glass @ 85 now.

 

Both trucks were 4wd crew cab short beds.

Thanks Bowtie, one last question for me. Did you ever have the Goodyears balanced on the new truck or just swapped them from front to back and the vibration moved? I am experiencing the rear vibration at about 72+ and replaced the Goodyears with Cooper ATP's. Everything is balanced out according to 3 road force machines but I still have the rear vibe. Steering wheel is smooth so I might try the front to back swap to see if its the new tires or not.

I never had them balanced, I just did a few "tests" on my own. I told myself I would not have another experimental truck.

Good call, we went through literally the exact same thing. They bought my first one back in Feb and now the new one vibrates in the rear. I don't want to start throwing parts at it until someone comes up with a solution on here that might be plausible since I already have aftermarket tires.

Still could very well be the driveshaft. I was going to get mine balanced after the tires but no need now. The other truck had a brand new complete rear end installed and no change at all so I doubt it's the rear end. Put your truck in 2wd instead of auto and see if it makes a difference ? Maybe it could be shitty shocks unable to stabilize the rear end at highway speeds as well

Interesting. I pretty much feel vibrations in the steering wheel at all speeds but it's relatively constant in severity, but fluctuates in vibration speed with vehicle speed and it also fluctuates in noticeability with temperature.

 

In other words low tire temp/pressure and I hardly feel anything below 45 mph. At 60mph I start to feel it more.

 

When it's hotter outside and tire pressure increases from 35psi to 38-39 psi, I notice the vibration more at all speeds.

 

But again the severity of the vibration doesn't change. Let me use a music analogy. Think of a drummer hitting a drum. Imagine him hitting the drum once every second and then imagine home hitting the drum once every half second, but he doesn't change how hard he hits the drum. That's what I'm trying to describe with my vibration relative to speed. It's not a more violent vibration at higher speeds, just faster.

The part one is forgetting is large tires will tame some vibration just like harmonic weights on early v8

Vibration is caused by mechanical energy being absorbed into the vehical, or road energy being absorbed into the tires into suspension to body.

Large rim size, and low profile tires would transfer energy better to the body cause of physics laws.

The tires used on these trucks might be crap, but most have what I would describe as mechanical energy vibration issues. Meaning unbalanced parts, bad machining, or design flaw issues.

Bad driveshafts, and ring and pinion issues, compounded with transmission always trying to shifting into higher gear. This causes the engine to run at low rpm and will only add to the vibration.

So in a nut shell tires might help some, but for most this will not correct the other mechanical vibrations.

I believe its tires..I did in fact notice my vibration worsened with heat.. the longer the drive the worse it got.. Hwre is an idea... if you can do it safely...put your truck up on jack stands and put it in 4x4 and kick her up to about 40 and see if you can see the tires wobble.. there was a noticeable "hump" in my front passenger tire.. dealer warrantied.. replaced vibration gone for a few days..came back on a longer trip..said screw amd got rid of the good years... maybe they are just easily "unbalanced"???? Dont know...dont care..I couldnt be happier with these hancooks! Sad part is Goodyears made in USA.. hancooks are made in Korea...

If it vibrates more than the other dozen or so trucks I have owned over 37 years why should I now be putting weight in the back.

Goodyear tires

 

The engineer relayed through the GM Rep that they were having problems with the stock Goodyears. He said that the way they are made the get knocked out of balance very easily. The tires are a known issue with GM.

 

My issue had little to do about the tires, I had Nittos put on as part of the truck purchase. Although I had them Road Forced I had issues later. I always thought the front end felt like it dragged. I asked for an alignment at 3000 miles, GM finally agreed to do it at 12000 miles. It was out of alignment, now the tires have a bit of uneven wear.

    • $3.90 to $4.50 depending on the brand and location of the station. 87 regular. 
    • Guys that read Dizzy's thread know that eons ago after multiple manifold pulls to clear the CCV orifice I converted it to a PCV system with an orifice below it via the valve cover. The blow-by (sticky rings) was so bad it was impossible to keep clean and accumulated water in the oil in the winter when the moisture would freeze in the fresh air side. The PCV functioning mainly as a check valve. I carefully sized the orifice to reproduce the factory values for crankcase pressure at idle.    Well...took a slug of oil to get my attention but the ring seal improvement meant the system was over drafting sucking oil up and out the breather. (V8 guys with orifice systems are nodding their heads). So today I choked it down...allot....to replicate the "just enough to hold a piece of paper on the fresh air side at idle". May still be to much but I'm working with shims at the moment. When I get it sorted I'll make a proper plate and plug. Perhaps using carburetor jets to tune it.    So I guess this means it isn't my imagination.    Dizzy is a pig guys so don't go expecting huge moves in equipment (your equipment) that is in much better shape. A needle valve....lord that just came to me....
    • I had a new engine installed with under 5,000 miles. It shut off coming around a residential street corner and wouldn't restart. Dealer indicated it seized. New one has been fine since with 10,000 miles on the replaced engine. Annoying but I was given a loaner for the 5 weeks it was down. I won't go with the 6.2l gasser so it's 3.0l again. I love the economy and it tows my enclosed car trailer just fine. 
    • Coming back from towing a car to my daughter in Nashville truck started making a screaming noise from underneath.  Pulled over placed in park and sure enough whining noise from underneath.  Dropped at the dealer fearing new tranny or another front pump/cover replacement.  Service writer said it sounded like the tranny too...  Well $300, new idler and a belt all is good.  Pop the hood and give a listen. lol  Now I'm telling dealers I'm no longer interested in a new truck.
    • HD uses the 6.6 gas.   Oil consumption while heavy working is considered normal.  1 quart per 100 gallons of fuel is the normal rate above 8600lbs GVWR.  If more than that, it is considered excessive.   They will have to perform an oil consumption test using the guidelines in TSB 03-06-01-023J.     Information on Engine Oil Consumption Guidelines All engines require oil to lubricate and protect the load bearing and internal moving parts from wear including cylinder walls, pistons, and piston rings. When a piston moves down its cylinder, a thin film of oil is left on the cylinder wall. During the combustion process, part of this oil layer is consumed. As a result, varying rates of oil consumption are accepted as normal in all engines. Oil Consumption Oil usage has a direct relationship with the amount of fuel used. The harder an engine works, the more fuel and oil it will use. Therefore, oil usage as a factor of fuel usage is a more accurate indicator of acceptable oil consumption levels than vehicle mileage for vehicles at or above 8600 GVW. The accepted rate of oil consumption for gasoline engines in vehicles at or above 8600 GVW is 1 liter (1 qt) within 400 liters (100 gallons) of fuel used. This rate only applies to vehicles under warranty, maintained in accordance with the appropriate maintenance schedule, driven at legal speeds and within design intent of the vehicle. Many factors can affect an owner's concern with oil consumption. Driving habits and vehicle maintenance vary from owner to owner. Thoroughly evaluate each case before deciding whether the vehicle in question has abnormal engine oil consumption. Gasket and External Leaks Inspect the oil pans, engine covers, and the engine oil cooler for leakage. Inspect for oil leakage into the engine coolant. Improper Reading of the Oil Level Indicator (Dipstick) The vehicle must be parked on a level surface to obtain accurate oil level readings. Verify that the dipstick tube is fully seated in the block. When checking the oil level, make sure the dipstick is wiped clean before taking an oil level reading and fully depress the dipstick until the shoulder bottoms out on the dipstick tube. The dipstick should be the proper part number for the engine/vehicle that is being checked. Not Waiting Long Enough After Running Engine to Check Oil Level The vehicle should be allowed to sit for at least 15 minutes, after the engine has been shut off, before taking an oil level reading to assure the oil has had enough time to drain back into the crankcase. In order to ensure accurate results, the temperature of the oil should be close to the same temperature as the last time the oil level was checked. Improper Oil Fill After an Oil Change Following an oil change, verify that the proper amount and type of oil was put in the engine and that the oil level on the dipstick is not above the full mark or below the add marks. Refer to the Owner's Manual or Service Manual for information on recommended oil quantity, viscosity, and quality. High Speed or High RPM Driving Continuous driving at high speeds/high RPMs may increase oil consumption. Because this may not always be an everyday occurrence, it is hard to determine exactly how much the oil economy will be affected. Towing or Heavy Usage Towing a trailer or hauling additional weight will increase oil consumption. Large frontal area trailers will further increase the work required from the engine, especially at highway speeds, and thus increases the rate of oil consumption. PTO Operation Operation of a PTO will increase fuel and oil usage, as the PTO driven accessory uses engine power to operate. Crankcase Ventilation System Verify that the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system is operating properly. Blockages, restrictions, or damage to the PCV system can result in increased oil use. Oil Dilution from Condensation On vehicles that are usually driven short distances, less than 8 km (5 mi), especially in colder weather, condensation generated from cold engine operation may not get hot enough to evaporate out of the oil. When this occurs, the dipstick may indicate that the oil level is over-full. Subsequent driving on a trip of sufficient length to enable normal engine operating temperature for 30 minutes or more, in order to vaporize excess moisture, may give the customer the impression of excessive oil consumption. Engine Temperature If an engine is run at overheated temperatures (see Owner's Manual or Service Manual) for more than brief periods, oil will oxidize at a faster than normal rate. In addition, gaskets may distort, piston rings may stick, and excessive wear may result. Verify that all cooling system components are in proper working order. Engine Wear Piston scuffing, excessive piston-to-wall clearance, tapered or out of round cylinders, worn, damaged or improperly installed valve guides, seals and piston rings will all cause an increase in oil consumption. Measurement of Oil Consumption Engines require a period of time to BREAK IN so that moving parts are properly seated. Therefore, oil economy should not be tested until the vehicle has accumulated at least 6400 km (4000 mi). An exception would be allowed only if an engine is reported to be using more than 0.946 liter (1 qt) in 1600 km (1000 mi).   Verify that the engine has no external leaks. Repair as necessary. Verify that the engine is at normal operating temperature (see Owner's Manual or Service Manual). Park the vehicle on a level surface. Wait at least 15 minutes, after the engine is shut off, before checking the oil level to make sure that most of the oil has had time to drain back into the crankcase. Check the oil level and record the vehicle mileage, date, and exact oil level on the form included in this bulletin. Next ensure the oil level is at, but not above, the full mark on the dipstick. add oil if necessary. Also ensure the proper viscosity and quality oil are being used as recommended in the Owner Manual Ask the customer once they have consumed 100 gallons of fuel schedule an appointment and return to the dealer for inspection. If the final evaluation shows that the engine uses more than 0.946 liter (1 qt) in 379 liters (100 gallons) of fuel used, follow the published symptom diagnostics as described in the appropriate Service Manual. If the oil consumption test shows that the engine uses less than 0.946 liter (1 qt) in 379 liters (100 gallons) of fuel used, explain to the customer that their engine meets the guidelines for oil consumption.
