Hey Everybody, this may have been brought up but there is noway I'm going through 501 pages to look for it LOL. I have a 14 Silverado and have had a shake issue since new. I've always wanted to take it in but being a project manager for a busy construction company I never had the time or patience to deal with their stupid loaner car.

 

I guess my question is, at 77k miles is it to late to deal with this? I feel like it's now getting worse and am really regretting not taking it in earlier.

 

Anyway, thank you for the help in advance.

I really doubt they would do anything with that type of mileage, but I've been wrong before !

 

They are making plenty of money, so I figure the GM attitude is hope this all blows over.

After 6 months of "vibration frustration", including 20 tires and 16 wheels, the BBB arbitrator says tough luck. The system will flat wear a guy out. On my arbitration date, last Thursday, it was 36 degrees, raining, cab full of 5 large adults and a driver (arbitrator) that didn't want to drive over the speed limit. With these 4 factors, there was very little vibration. Today driving home from work with no rain, 45 degrees and sunny, and just me in the cab, driving 77 mph, it shakes like crazy! Go figure! It's time for me to just take my loss and unload my Silverado but I pledge to use social media to let everyone know to BEWARE. Now I'm thinking a pre 2014 GM truck, a Ford or a Dodge. I can't believe it has come to this.

Sorry to hear the outcome....Im still waiting for my arbitration decision from last week. Ive already begun looking at new trucks as Im anticipating trading this POS in. Researching other brands ive come across videos of the Ram and F150 with the same issue. Knowing my luck I will probably get another lemon. It seems like the Tundra is the way to go with the least amount of complaints. Good luck on your search and let us know what you end up with.

Everyone that has the vibration listen up. My 2014 Sierra was fixed by having the rear end rebuilt. It turned out that there are bad seals in the rear differential so they replaced it and the pinion and a gear. Running smooth now. Background: Steering wheel shook at 40-52 mph especially when coasting to a stop. They tried new tires and road force balancing but that did not work. One GM engineer even told my service manager that they could replace every part on the truck and it would still shake. Don't take that for an answer. Paying 40+K for a vehicle and having that shaking is not acceptable. BTW, mine did not start until 5K miles and got worse until about 15K. Now I hope it is fixed at 19K. Good luck and hope this helps.

OK it'd been a while since I last posted. With that did I do read these updated posted several times a day. So many different ideas on what the cause is. I have encountered something I haven't seen before. Over the holidays I drove to Massachusetts from Jersey. Still vibrated and I think has gotten worse very recently. One thing I noticed something odd on my trip back to Jersey. For a moment maybe several miles, maybe more then 5 less then 10. The truck drove like it was on glass. It was so noticeable that I was almost in tears, lol. Just a thought, I'll say what I was thinking. It was like whatever magic lottery ticket that I just cashed was something that phased in sync then phased back out. Almost as if from various turns, maybe from the limited slip which changes phasing of the timing of axles and rings pinion that it momentarily BALANCED!!!! When it happened I was on a rather straight portion of road and as it started to slowly curve the vibration came about slowly then progressed. This wasn't a momentary thing or a temporary road condition thing. So I figured I'd throw this out there maybe someone has a thought that would expand using what occurred. Thanks, H.

Your steering wheel shake at 40-52 mph sounds like a different issue that the vibrations at 75 mph. Of course, there could be multiple problems with these vehicles, each with a different (or non-existent) solution.

 

How does yours behave at 75 mph?

Drives smooth at 75. I was told the harmonic oscillation can occur at any speed. I would still have them check with there vibrational machine if the rear end is in spec at that speed. New tires and road force balancing did nothing for the vibration I was experiencing.

SteveU, did your dealer use a PICO on your truck? What did the dealer tell you was out of spec?

 

I did not review the readings but took the dealer's word that it was tires needing roadforce balanced.

 

Road Force balancing made and improvement but vibration is still there.

 

So my question to all again: Are some dealers hiding the real PICO readings? Hoping we go away? Or are the PICOs picking up tire when it should be rear end?

Road Force balancing made and improvement but vibration is still there.

Yes they used a PICO on the truck and confirmed what I found to be the fix online. The vibration was coming from the gear and pinion in the rear differential.

Also, I think most dealers don't have a clue what is going on because they are getting bad advice from GM. One GM engineer even told the service manager that they could replace every part on the truck and it would not fix the problem. One engineer told the shop where I bought the truck it is caused by the engine switching from V8 to V4. Give me a break. I don't think they want to admit there is a big problem out there coming from the rear end but the instrument does not lie.

Update

GM Tech Support has determined the rear end needs replacing again.

The replacement parts the dealer installed a month ago were in spec but were made in Mexico so I guess they were not certified or something. The new parts on order are made in Michigan which means they are certified so they are guaranteed to work... supposedly.

I said the whole truck was made in Mexico so I guess that's whats wrong with it then. Send me one made in Michigan and maybe we'll have a certified truck. :pimp:

Hey steveU, listen up. As soon as you start a post with "listen up" most people are going to tune you out lol

 

And glad your truck is fixed, hope it stays that way for you. Most who have had the rear replaced end up having the vibration come back.

If they replaced every part on the truck with the same crappy parts that are causing the problem, of course they will not fix anything. The solution is to overhaul the whole manufacturing process and start producing quality parts and assemblies built to proper tolerances. So now you see why there is no simple fix here.

I bought a Tundra after 3 sets of tires going to my 4th set on my 14 Silverado. I love it...... Especially since gas is less than 2 bucks. But even if it wasn't I'm loving not having issues or recalls with my truck. Had a Ram before I bought my Silverado and Transmission went out after 3000 miles. I dared not give Ford a chance. I'm happy for those owners with no issues....just not my experience. Good luck!

    • Question @diyer2 on this line if you please. Are you saying the shudder is the system turning on and off at the frequency of the shudder? Guess I'm asking if you are saying you have seen it do this with the bi-direction scan tool in graph mode? If so have you been able to discern the 'trigger'. Something is telling to cycle rapidly.    My truck just started doing this recently. 197K on the clock. My response has been M5 anything under 55 mph. I treat it like a lugging stick shift. Gear down and let it spin a bit. Engauge M5, then tow mode and then M6 lets the trans stay in 5th but the AFM is active. Smooth like Skippy.    My thought was that as a machine ages the friction gets lower and as the system is load based, the lower friction would allow it to turn on at ever lower rpm until it reaches the lugging point. And yes I am ignorant of any minimum rpm requirement for the system. If you know that would be useful information.    As you know I run a Scan-Gauge II which allows me to watch the On/Off of the signal to the VLOM. While in the shudder mode I'm not seeing is cycle at that frequency or at all for that matter outside the triggers @newdude posted a few years back. Now is it possible that the refresh rate isn't fast enough to catch it? Maybe. It is why I asked my first question about graphing and trigging parameter.     As we have observed from members here the failure point is all over the map miles wise as you note yourself in your opening post. That by itself begs a few questions like fellows that comment on these lifters failing even after the system has been disabled.     • UPDATE 2: Steering wheel control backlights and control of the cluster can supposedly be achieved by adding a wire to pin 20 of the cluster and tapping it to pin 2 of the main clock spring harness. I'm going to give it a shot - will update  
    • GM Global A pickups 2019-2022 can do OTA programming for the radio.  GM VIP (GM Global B) can do OTAs for almost every module on board.  So a 2022.5 and newer pickup can do OTAs for recalls like the 2.7 fuel flow recall.  EVs get OTAs that improve one pedal driving, radio issues, HVAC issues, updated battery management software, etc.     So age of the vehicle/what GM electrical platform its on will alter what amount of updates can be pushed on OTAs.  
    • Thank You.   So far my new ride is making me look like a genius for going with the 3.0L, as my first fuel refill occurred over three weeks from when I took delivery.  This engine combination is very amazing.  So far no issues and had not done a regen yet.
    • I am curious as to how much fluid you put back in the transmission ( assuming you had replaced the filter to compare to my findings ) and then went through the process of warming up the trans before pulling the check plug to drain out the excess and if you measured how much came back out.    I just found it surprising that some claimed a certain amount less fluid being put in and then draining some back out. The attitude of the truck as per if the surface is level and how the trucks stance is would make quite a difference since the check plug is right at the front of the transmission.
