I like the new lights and front bumper on the sierra but I think they messed up the grille. Hopefully the new 16 tail lights fit the 15's those look really sharp, not sure how I feel about the new bar led's in the 16 but, led head lights would be a nice upgrade.

I agree with the lights on the Sierra all around. I don't think that the grill on the Sierra looks that bad, but the '16 Silverado looks like absolute shit. I hate the way the led DRL's are styled, I hate how small the headlamp housing is, I HATE the grill design. I basically just hate the '16 Silverado. this was the opposite for the '15 Silverado & Sierra, I liked the headlamps grill etc of the Silverado but not the Sierra.

So I have some new strange issues that happened with my truck today. I went to drive to the store, and the radio wouldn't work at all. I turned the truck off, got out closed the door, and tried again, still nothing. Went to the store with out the radio, come out and only the left (driver) side speakers are working, go to a different store up the road, and when i come out of that store, all of the speakers are working.

 

There is also now a "rattle" from the right rear of the truck, I think it has something to do with the suspension> They tightened the U bolts yesterday because per the recall because they weren't torqued to spec.

 

This truck is ridiculous

What you describe is why I haven't pushed the dealer in trying to fix the vibration. I figured more problems would be created than fixed. I haven't been able to fix the problem but I haven't made anything worse or created any new issues, but at least eliminated some potential sources. Too bad a new rear end costs $2000, might just end up with another out of spec POS rear end. I considered buying a complete 9.76 with 3.73 ratio since no one makes a 3.73 gear set for these new 12 bolts but leery about it being a vibrator, even considered a used 2013 rear end, but who knows what kind of cluster that would be to swap in.

yea, I hear ya. I'd be careful on trying to swap a rear end from a 2012 or 2013. I was messaging a guy who was talking about his 2012 that was having vibe problems... I personally havn't heard of vibes in a 2012, but idk

Opened the rear end this weekend and checked things out. 4 teeth had chips that look like this. This was the worst of the 4. My vibration may be within spec but we shall see if gm feels this gear is within spec, I suspect the heat treatment wasn't up to par and makes me question the overall quality and tolerances of this gear set.

Wow, that does not look good at all. No way that meets any reasonable spec for a rear end gear set. Besides the obvious quality issues, I wonder how much these "two-cut" gears are playing a role in all the troubles.

 

Did you happen to check the backlash all the way around? Anyone know what GM spec is?

We had a garage sale this weekend. Guy pulled up in a 14 Silverado.

 

Asked how he likes it, says has some issues.

 

I said vibration, he confirmed yes - console shakes all over the place, Annoying vibration

Told him about the multiple pages of owners with same issues told him mine did the same.

 

His comment, was like really - I am not the only one!

There are people out there that have no idea about this problem.

I bet his dealer service department told him that they never heard of vibration problems with these trucks.

Got my truck back today. New driveshaft, rear pinion gear, bearing, seal...no vibrations. It's like th enew truck I shoul dhave had 20,000 miles ago.

 

There is a break in period with the new gears. After that's over, I'm going to tow my 9k trailer to the beach for a celebration. WOO! Never going to visit this thread again! I'll post a copy of the service order if you're interested.

Can you detail out what you were feeling? Speeds? Seat / Steering wheel?

I went for a drive with the tech to ensure we were feeling the same vibe. As I noted, at 42-43mph, his vibe sensor hooked up to his laptop picked up the oscillations. The order of troubleshooting went:

 

balance tires = vibe still there

new drveshaft = vibes still there

rear pinion/gear replaced = vibes gone

 

For me, it felt like going over a rumble strip, in the steering wheel. A little in the console.

Been following this thread, as I also have the dreaded highway vibration. It's back to the dealer for the 2nd time, and they are replacing a tire, after the first time they only did the road force balance.

 

What I don't understand is that there doesn't seem to be much consistency to the cause of the problem other than it occurs at 40 +/- mph and 75 +/-.

 

It happens in 2wd trucks, 4wd trucks, crew cab, double cab, Denali's, along with mine which is a "Max Tow" equipped truck, so it has different leaf springs and rear end.

 

Seems like many of the issues have been fixed with tires, with some fixed with driveshaft and/or rear ends. My question is, why are these truck SO sensitive to tires??? I've talked to one service manager that has gone through 3 or 4 sets of tires to get rid of the shake on a truck. That's ridiculous... I've also talked to a tech that works at a local dealer that's seen several come though and he said GM doesn't have a solid fix...

 

BTW, I came out of a 2012 Ford Eco-Boost with 100k miles, on it's 2nd set of tires and never had a vibration like this in my brand new truck. I truly think it's in more trucks than being reported, unless you came out of a later model and know how they should ride, you might think "it's just how a truck rides"...

I have had my rear axle assembly swapped with new on both my 2014 and 2015 Silverado. GM knows they have issues with this. Just print out the article on oemdtc and bring it in with you. This is what causes the steering wheel and truck to vibrate slightly when you are decelerating. The runout/backlash is not to spec on the ring/pinion so the gears grind.

 

I feel bad for owners that will never get this fixed, and have to pay out of pocket once warranty is gone and their rear differential fails.

Surely you don't agree with his 80% do have vibration issues???

I am not saying 80% have vibration issues, but 80% of the trucks I test drove did. Actually more, because I included my new 2015 into that calculation as a "non vibrator", but turns out it is after all. Also, finally got around to making a video for proof of how bad they shake on the highway:

 

This is AFTER GM swapped out 'bad tires', RF balanced everything, and replaced my rear axle assembly...

My intention was to measure backlash, While I was rotating the case measuring runout I noticed the chips in 4 teeth took pictures and stopped there. Measuring the backlash on 41 teeth is a PITA especially on a hypoid gear tooth. Spec for back lash I believe is .007-.013" with .008" being ideal, and the difference in backlash between teeth is .003" or less. I called the service manager and gave home the whole run down of it being put on the PICO but being below GM spec, so they vector matched and RF balanced the tires but it didn't solve the problem, I told him I opened up the diff and found chips and took some pictures and asked if he wanted me to email them to him so they could decide how they wanted to proceed, He said bring it in first thing tomorrow morning. The truck is in at the dealer as I type this, waiting for a phone call to see what they have decided to do.

    • Any joy with this truck seems to be short-lived.   The CEL for P0172 ("bank 1" too rich) is now "intermittent".   I'm not sure where to check, or re-check, and my energy to keep chasing problems with junk is wearing thin. The P0172 seems to set as I'm coming to a stop, completely off the throttle, when fully warm. At least, that's what it's done the 3? times it's set.   Everything appears normal on the scanner EXCEPT long term fuel trim. There's only one bank on this vehicle because it's an OBD 1.5 with only one upstream O2 sensor. At idle, it's around -16.4% and will dip to -18% occasionally at idle or off-throttle. LTFT approaches 0 when throttle is held at 2500rpm. Short term appears normal, much closer to zero all the time. The LTFT tells me the engine is running rich at idle but compensating at higher load. But, why?   The EVAP purge valve doesn't appear to be leaking/sucking fuel vapor continuously. Is it sticking just as I come to a stop and the engine is choking on fuel vapor and sets the P0172? But that doesn't explain the persistently negative LTFT. Disconnecting the purge valve doesn't seem to make any difference.   I suppose that leaves another dang issue with the fuel injector. A leaking fuel pressure regulator, a new leak in the spider, or a leaking fuel injector/poppet valve I didn't see, or a small crack in one of the spider legs.   The vacuum line leading to the fuel pressure regulator doesn't have raw fuel in it. It doesn't even smell like fuel when it's pulled off, not until you suck air through it, then you can tell it leads to a fuel component. I'd consider that normal? Nothing is signaling this is a FPR issue from the outside, at least.   The oil smells like fuel but it's not building volume. I've noticed most oil in most engines smells like fuel to some degree so it's hard to say if the smell is an issue or not. Or if the engine just still smells like fuel because the crankcase was full of it a few hundred miles ago. But it's been changed twice since that original issue of the leaking fuel line dumping fuel into the intake.   Patience is running very thin. Every win seems to be accompanied by two steps backwards, or another issue that leads to removing at least the top half of the intake manifold. Enough! LOL
    • First off you mentioned "Toyo Says" and then gave the pressures 45/50, was this some person at the tire shop that pulled those numbers out of his head ?   Now of course I can't know your exact axle weights front and rear, however I have much the same pickup as yourself other than not knowing your starting weight as per the pounds the truck rolled out of the factory at due to the options yours did or didn't come with or what you have added beyond the extra tire weight. The correct way to know 100% where a person is at is by weighing each axle with the typical weight the vehicle is driven with and that means taking into account passengers and making sure you figure in a full tank of fuel and a little grace for whatever you may put in the bed "groceries" !    I am looking at and not that it really matters as all the tire companies use the same charts anyway, but I am looking at the comprehensive Toyo tire chart in the section that your tire falls under and I know it sounds confusing but your tire is not an LT metric tire like your factory tire but instead because its a standard inch measured tire its under a different category called an LT floatation series tire. That makes a difference as LT metric tires they don't want to see run below 35 psi at highway speed where as with the LT floatation series it can be run down to 25 psi on the highway as long as the weight on the said size of tire is agreeable with or less than that minimum 25 psi. It blows many people away that how is this physically possible, an empty truck for one thing and larger tires with the same size wheel diameter have a lot more air volume so they can carry the same weight as the smaller tire with less air pressure.    So my truck, I have the stock 275/65R20 wheels and tires and I have a bit of weight in the box with a bak flip cover and a rubber bed mat and some tools and spare gas. The front of my gas truck weighs a bit more than some trucks of the similar spec due to double batteries and alternators. However with full fuel and just me in the truck I am weighted such that I can run 40 front and 35 rear and so that is what I have done since day one.    If I base your truck at or slightly below the weight of my truck, in theory with your tires going by the tire chart you might be right around a minimum of 30 pounds front and 25 pounds rear. Of course that would hit pretty much minimum cold inflation pressure one could run with that tire size and a near empty truck. If you have access to an accurate weigh scale to do individual front and rear axle weights I would suggest you do that and make sure your topped up with fuel and whatever else in the truck before you weigh it and then you will have a great starting point to work off of and figure out what your bare minimum pressures are you can safely run. If you do much in the way of hot weather high speed driving, bumping up a bit for a safety margin is never a bad idea but just depends on what type of driving you do. I will include the Toyo chart and the floatation series sizes start on page 31. Without a doubt at these pressures I am speculating at minimum wise for your truck, it would most certainly ride very different then it did when you were using 55 lb front and rear.     https://www.toyotires.com/media/pxcjubjs/application_of_load_inflation_tables_20200723.pdf
    • Take an automotive stethoscope to the vacuum pump. Iirc those tick as well. 
    • This landing is worse than most. Patchy blacktop with washouts, soft gravel/sand at bottom that washes out with every heavy rain. I tell everyone to put it in 4WD. A lot of them think they can pull out their trailer in 2WD. They end up digging a hole and then putting it in 4WD.  The lake is a pristine lake and has a lot of money on it. There are several wake boats and lot of large tritoons.     • How wide are your rims?   Toyo specs 8.5-10.0-11.0 inches. My thought would be rim might be pulling the tire inwards creating a center that is more pronounced.    I also noticed that the spec sheet says max 65psi. So you could be right lowering the pressure to ~40 psi.
