GM Says Chevy Colorado "Fastest-selling truck"

General Motors truck sales just had a huge February. Despite the snowpocalypse in the Northeast, or perhaps partly because of it, GM truck sales in the US were up 36 percent over last February. The Silverado was up 24%, the Sierra about 7%, and the new Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon both continue their strong upward momentum to a combined sales volume of about 9,000 units.

 

The enthusiasm at GM's HQ must have been pretty insane. Kurt McNeil, GM's US VP of sales operations said in a press release "Six months into its launch, the Chevrolet Colorado is the industry’s fastest-selling pickup, regardless of brand or model year." While his statement may be true, the Toyota Tacoma outsold the combined Colorado and Canyon, and will continue to until GM's production finishes its ramp. Toyota's Tacoma and Tundra share a production flow, and the Tacoma typically sells in the 10K to 12K unit per month range depending upon how many Tundras the company builds. We interpret Mr. McNeil's statement to mean that the Colorado moves off dealer lots fast. There is no doubt that is true.

 

McNeil also said that "Our new SUVs and crossovers, combined with the three-pickup strategy we outlined more than a year ago, are dovetailing perfectly with the growing U.S. economy and a stronger job market." Tahoe sales were up 49% and the Suburban doubled its sales. Family car sales were terrible. The Malibu, Cruze, and Impala were all down compared to last February.

I wondered how these were selling nationwide. Our local dealer received 3 about a month ago and they are all sold.

The fact that these are built on the same line with Express/Savana is what is hurting the production flow because the GM full size van twins had a surge in sales and are ramping production. I wonder if a different plant would have better suited the demand.
