2014 Silverado Texting - LTZ Z71 w/Navigation

I bought a fully loaded 2014 silverado 1500 with Navigation ($52K MSRP). My friend purchased a 2015 HD diesel a few months ago. While riding in his truck I noticed that when he received a text message the truck would actually read it out to him so he didnt have to look at his phone. His interface on the navigation is slightly different than mine (colors, etc).

 

My truck will not read text messages like his and to be honest I'm kind of ticked off about it. Is there an update out there for this? If not, there should be as this is a great safety addition.

I had a 2014 Sierra SLE Crew Cab 2WD with navigation and it didn't have the feature. I traded the 2014 for a 2015 Sierra SLT Crew Cab 4WD without navigation and it does have the feature. I'm pretty sure it was an added feature from the 2014 to 2015 production year. Although I'm not sure why they couldn't add the feature with a software update unless they had to upgrade the Bluetooth hardware to a new version to be able to do so.

Not sure how this is a great safety addition. Wouldn't it be safest to avoid all texting while in your truck? I mean maybe if someone has a gun to your head and is forcing you to text, then this might be a safety feature.

jimlem, my point is it keeps you from picking up your phone and looking at a text. IMO that's safer than fiddling with your phone. Either way was just hoping I could access the feature on my truck if it is available. One would think GM would offer a simple software update.

It is not a simple software update, the radio module is completely different in the 2015 trucks and is not able to be added to the 2014 trucks. Chris White can add some sort of text feature to the 2014 thru the HMI module I believe, but it is a no go directly from GM.

 

That info is directly from the infotainment engineer I had been working with, and I specifically went into detail over the text feature the 2015 trucks got that the 2014 trucks were advertised to have from the factory.

Stopped by the dealer about this issue, and they keep saying that there is going to be updates. ( sure there is) Purchased a 2014 Cruze in November, it is really sad that something that is a third the price can do more. it will read the text back to you, you can view pictures from a flash drive, and a few other nice things. Really, I can't believe it's not a simple update to the software! Come on guys

I installed the HMI module update about six months ago on my 2014. Reads texts... Works great. Plus a few other extra goodies.

Yeah man I understand. I was going for funny and just came across wrong. I know what you mean. Every important text I get is always when I'm driving with the phone down in my pocket. I keep telling my kids: call me if you need me but don't text me when you know I'm driving.

 

I hope you have better results with that than I do lol. My favorite is when my son texts me when I'm driving, and instead of texting back I call him right away and he doesn't answer. UGH

Since day 1 it has READ texts to me over the Bluetooth system. I simply say reply. Speak my text and say send. No need to take my Windows phone out of my pocket. Mine does NOT display the text on the screen as this was a '15 update. However if you have a '14 you can get a 2013-2015 GM Video In Motion and Navigation Unlock which updates text messaging and unlocks video in motion. I have a 14 late build (August 14) non navigation 8 inch and I cannot say any commands to work with texts. However I can easily pick up my iPhone 5s and tell Siri to do it without taking eyes off of the road.

I wish I could do this... Maybe I can and just am missing an update? What software version do u have? Do you have the text/messages icon option in the home screen?

Not sure about software version. I think it depends on your phone. I do not have the icon on my screen. As soon as recieve a text "Cortana" (Windows Phone) comes over the speakers and tells me I have a text. I must say IGNORE or REPY. If I say Ignore it just cancels. If I say Reply, I simply say what I want to text and then Cortana asks me if I want to START OVER, ADD MORE, or SEND.

 

However, I can not initialize a NEW text without touching the phone and then switching to voice commands......I think....not really tried it yet.

      How many years have I pointed out every point in that link to the folks here and been avalanched with criticisms and outright hostilities at times? I ran counter to even the great CUSTOMBOSS and Lake Speed Jr and the half dozen experts on YouTube and in the final.....GM, Physics (Stribeck) backs that Grumpy old Bear.    Honestly, I never said a thing engineering hadn't studied silly and laid in concrete during WWII. But I'm old, the information is old and yet, the Laws of Physics are eternal.    Okay there is one exception. I vehemently disagree with their use of the word 'tolerances' when what it meant is "clearance".   The clearance is the distance between two objects. The tolerance is the degree of acceptable variation permitted in that clearance. I.E., piston to bore clearance is 0.004" with a tolerance of +/- .0002" so the clearance is in specification if it lies between 0.0038" and 0.0042". Cutting that 'tolerance in half has ZERO impact on lubrication requirements. Makes for more difficulty in manufacturing.  But a tighter clearance 'MAY'. Depends on finish. Anyway....   It's one of those statements made by people to make themselves look smarter than they are to convince people who are as un-enlighten as they seem to manipulate their behaviors. But hey, the blind leading the blind puts them both in the pit.

      Out and about yesterday on a long Saturday drive I passed a lot of Shell stations. My preferred, so I pay attention. Lot's of small town Illinois so not six stations in three blocks like the city.    Everyone of them over a radius of say 100 miles had regular at $4.19 but one which was the one closest to home at $4.15. However Premium pricing varied greatly between 85 cents over regular to $1.50 over. I'm not counting the price of the station with the lowest regular so the reference is the same for the remainder and all within the same brand. However the spread discrepancy holds across all brands.     @txab, any thoughts on that?

      What are your thoughts? The Chevy Blazer relaunch was an epic case of 'lunchbag letdown'. Jeep Wranglers and Ford Broncos stick out like a sore thumb.    The AI photos do not look like a 'retro version', but shrunken Tahoes. Get away from the 'futuristic look'. I've seen two concepts. One had rectangular headlight like a Rivian and the other way to big should include dual round headlights like the early version.   If not this would look OK   At least it has GM styling (albeit the K2XX) A lot of the images floating around look like Bronco IIs or the current Bronco. Looking at the Broncos in my area (central Ontario, it seems to be a mix of 2 doors and 4 doors, 'mall rated' to ones that could go offroad.    I'm sure a AT4 and AT4X RPOs could be outfitted similar to a Rubicon if the braintrust understood the whole offroad scene. Crosing my fingers that if it does see the light that the front air dam/bumper doesn't extend below the center line of the tire...

      And overpriced. I was in the Oshawa Truck Plant when they were being built. Very few. I could count on one hand how many I've seen since
