100 mph Governor

I've often wondered about this one, and would love some insight. Not to say I'd do it (because I rarely tow anything), if the truck is rated to tow/haul X pounds up to say 70mph, which is 70% of the govenor'ed speed, then why would the driveshaft be a problem at a higher empty weight speeds? It is it because of increased revolutions? Because it would be under less directional stress empty at 110mph than towing double its weight at 65 or 70mph.

 

Edit: To be perfectly clear, I am not supporting driving that fast, or defending the driveshaft, just merely looking for education on what the real concern is.

Answering the question without condoning high speeds, there would be a lot of vibration before you lose the drive shaft. I would suggest a loop if your going drag race often, cheep to do.

I cant even count how many times i have seen this topic of discussion on just this generation of trucks. GM has been using the same limiter speed for years. They have also been using the same tires for years. And as for the driveshaft, the shadt itself isnt the issue, it is the needle bearings in the universal joints. Very small and can not tolerate heat well. Increased RPMs on them will cause them to heat, distort, and eventually seize. Once that happens the driveshaft breaks free and becomes a hazard to you or other drivers.

 

Agreed this topic seems to come full circle every so often, and as someone that had to dodge part of a shaft out of a dump truck on the highway, they are definitely a hazard when they go. To expand on my question based on your comment about the needle bearings in the u-joints, they'd be under a lot of directional stress in a truck doing 65mph towing a trailer, and thus, would heat as well, would they not?

 

Again, not defending the shaft can stand up to high speeds for a period of time, just trying to understand why the stresses on it at high speeds versus the stresses of heavy towing at legal speeds make it such a problem.

Answering the question without condoning high speeds, there would be a lot of vibration before you lose the drive shaft. I would suggest a loop if your going drag race often, cheep to do.

Thanks for the input. Yeah, I could see a shaft that has balancing issues coming apart at increased revolutions that wouldn't come up under heavy towing conditions. Makes me wonder if that's really the reason. For example, you can get a police package Tahoe that will go well past 100mph. I wonder if it gets a different driveshaft on the production line.

I just did a 5 week class on bearings. They can handle directional stress in a radial direction. Speed increase kills bearings

Diablo intune lol 400 bucks and go as fast as ya want lol ive had mine up to 125 with 35 12.50s lol on a road by myself still had more i just didnt trust the tires

Don't RWD cars have needle bearings in the U-joint's? I know mine does and they don't over heat and explode when you run it over 125 mph.

Size of the joint matters. Smaller area of contact means less friction which in turn means they can move a little faster.

Hi all,

 

Does anyone know about the speed governor on the 2014 Silverado 1500? I have some performance upgrades on my truck and I was on the hwy last night and realized it cut me off at 100. I couldn't accelerate anymore.

I think my regular cab 4x4 5.3 3.08 IS NOT limited.? I've had it up around 120 @ 5-5500 and it was still pulling.

 

BTW, went in for first service today and afterwards no more highway speed vibration. Who knows, maybe tomorrow it will return.

I call BS on this, unless you bought the truck used and the previous owner tuned the truck then there is no way a stock 2014+ truck is doing 120mph on the stock tune.

Hmm, I'm not following that one. I can see the engine RPM's the same at those 2 speeds, but the driveshaft would be spinning like crazy at 100mph.

Speed limiter will still kick in.

Rolled off the hauler from Roanoke Indiana with 0.0 miles. Took my wife to the east coast, sometimes above 100 mph for an hour or so and she never said a word about anything other than how comfortable she was.

 

First day in our new Roush she pissed her pants and cried all the way home. I figure it was the exhaust noise and not being able to move her body under hard acceleration.
