Noisy K&N intake, anyone else?

Hey guys,

I threw a K&N cold air kit on my 5.3 today, and holy Moses does it ROAR in the cab when I get on the accelerator. I've never had one this noisy before. I also have a Flo Pro muffler, still too cheap for cat back exhaust. It doesn't really bother me that much, but it seems abnormally loud. Maybe it's just because the truck was so quiet before. I checked everything after taking it for a test drive and it was all still connected firmly. It's probably normal, but I figured I'd see what others have experienced.

You just have decide if a few hp are worth the noise. Its not for me.

You are experiencing 99.99% of the gains of a "cold air intake". Just like a cat back, the only real gains are sound.

I tried 2 different CAI kits ..... couldn't stand the noise. I settled on just the stock air box with a KN filter...

You're hearing all the noise the Helmholtz resonators cancel out.

Nah. That's the sound $300 makes getting sucked into your engine.

If I had known it would make this much noise I wouldn't have bothered. The throttle response is better though at least

Lol, I have spent $1700+ CAD including labour and 3 year warranty....... $400 - 500 gets sucked in, the rest gets pushed out :rollin:

K&N intake and Magnaflow exhaust :')

I'll take the better acceleration over the noise any day. The Airaid is just fine under normal driving and normal acceleration.

I't only goes when I punch it. There can be some growl if your going up a slight grade in the road. More so in V4 mode.

Yeah that is pretty much what mine is like. I'm getting used to it, and kind of like it now. It actually sounds like a truck not a minivan.

Has anyone compared the K&N and Airaid? I wouldn't mind o little more sound and throttle response, but don't want it obnoxiously loud. I had the K&N CAI on a 99 and thought it sounded great.

More of the 'you wasted your money, CAI do nothing" people chiming in again. Been proven time and time again that the decent CAI that do the R&D do actually produce and provide gains in HP and fuel mileage increases. I seriously doubt K&N/Airaid and any of the other reputable CAI companies would risk market share and their names by making a product that does nothing.

I wish I still had my dyno runs from my 2008 Corvette, I did runs with the stock setup, the Z06 airbox and a Airaid CAI kit. The Z06 system alone added 5rwhp over the stock LS3 system, the Airaid produced 7-8rwhp gains over the stock system and also smoothed out the A/F ratios as well. To get 7-8rwhp gains means you are getting almost 10hp at the motor gains.

10hp here and 10hp there in mods sure does start adding up in the long run.

OP if you don't like the noise of the K&N (the Airaid has it as well, as said once you remove the resonator the throttle noise is more pronounced) then I would suggest getting the Airaid MIT kit and a drop in low restriction filter for the stock airbox. Then mod the airbox as someone posted recently to allow more airflow into it and you will get some decent gains.
