Tight fit in the garage

Until I read this I thought I was the only one using 2 x 4's. I do the exact same thing and works perfect. Like the others I have maybe 2 -3 inches of clearance. My problem is my 2003 is 227 inches and a 2017 (both Chevy and GMC) are 229.5 inches. I'm in the market for a new truck but not sure if I have an extra 2.5 inches :nonod: All other brands are 230 or longer. I sure hope the next redesign in 2019 (?) will be an inch or two shorter. Who ever thought building a 19 foot garage was a good idea

Who ever thought a guy wouldn't want an extra 2.5 inches :dunno:

I take it one step further. Once in my parking position i set the parking brake before putting it in park. No roll at all.

I thought about doing that, but the rear rotors are pretty warm when it gets parked. My fear was causing warpage that otherwise wouldn't be an issue.

The parking brake doesn't use the rotors, it uses small brake shoes like a drum brake and they contact the inside of the center of the rotor. So doesn't use the normal braking system at all. I used to do that too, just set the parking brake and then put it in park.

I forgot about the parking brake working like that. Thanks.

My wife pulls into the garage and I back into the garage. You cannot get in either passengers side until you pull out in the driveway. What a pain in the azz it is. Someone has to get out of the car and walk in the garage when you are pulling in to the garage. The weird thing is when I was building my house, the builder saw my truck and my wife's car. He drives a truck and his wife a pretty big SUV. I would have thought he would have said something about the closeness when we were going over the plans. I sure wish I would have installed two 18' doors in my four car garage and made it two feet deeper. I have plenty of room for both. As it stands now, I will probably be building a small shed to get all of the yard tools and motorcycles out of the garage so I can park two vehicles in a four car garage. Ugh! Expensive lesson learned.

That's clever use of space with the bikes just above the bed.

Garages must be getting smaller. We just built a new house and the garage is 24X42 and has two 16' doors. NEVER build a garage with 16' doors. I should have had 18' put in. At the same time, two feet deeper would have been much better.

No matter how big, it could always be bigger

I hate to say it, but most builders don't give a rat's ass about thinking things through and noticing future problems. As long as they adhere to the architectural plan they know they can't get blamed for anything. If you have the time it is far better to think about every room/space yourself while in the design phase. I've learned that the hard way.

15 1500 LT CC 4wd short bed.
I am in the same boat. A new F150 is 1.5 inches too long for the garage.
Where my garage has a slight forward slope, I make sure to back in, put it in park and then take my foot off the brake. This keeps the truck from rolling forward as much.
The backup camera and this from amazon are a must for tight quarters parking. http://a.co/fvR0aXf

That looks about how my garage is too in the clearance department... hehe

Thanks everyone for the discussion. We moved into the house this weekend and nope, the truck doesn't fit. The hinges on the door are the only reason it doesn't fit so the truck is long by about 1/2". I'm just going with the Mazzulla Offroad rear bumper. That should do the trick. I'll post picks once it's all on and painted.

I got the bumper on:

I used Duplicolor's "Perfect Match" for the paint. I sanded it and then primed it with three coats. Put three coats of the paint on. Then I used two coats of the Duplicolor clear bedliner. Then I finished it all off with three coats of their clear coat. It didn't turnout too bad. I probably didn't need the bedliner and may even sand it off and re-clear it. She fits in the garage now! PHEW. Next is to "rally cut" the rear quarter to make it look a little less out of place and do something about the exhaust. This is really starting to remind me of a Jeep project. You do one thing and then you have to do 18 other things to make it all work. :)

Thanks for the suggestions!

My Denali CC short box won't fit in my garage ...but it would if I didn't want to keep other vehicles in there  My builder was great. When he realized how much I loved a garage, he made one side 4' deeper, the ceiling almost 11' high and made extra hidden space for my tools, mower, snow blower etc. My wife has the middle ground
