I'm sure this has been discussed somewhere else in the forum, but I cannot find the exact answer I am looking for.

I have a 2015 Sierra SLT. I love the quietness of the cab, especially on long trips, but I really wish my truck had more of a throaty sound upon start up. Is the best way to achieve this just to get a new performance muffler? If so, what kind?

I don't really want to remove any of the factory parts like the resonator if I don't have to, and I don't want an obnoxious sound. I just want it to sound like a truck upon start up. Any help would be very appreciated.

I was the exact same way, i loved the quiet cab and didnt want something too obnoxious. I went with a borla muffler (p/n 40359) and i love it. I had the old muffler and flapper cut out, left the resonator. Soumds really nice on start up and when you get on but quiet when cruising and barely noticeable when in V4 mode. Muffler itself is only like $100 amd is worth every penny.

Metalman if you have a 5.3 consider Flowmaster 53071 or Magnaflow 12589 eliminating the flapper valve but leaving on the resonator. These are nearly stock sized large mufflers that will have a nice start-up, idle and full throttle sound yet little to no drone/V4 chop while cruising.

Please excuse my ignorance, but what exactly does the cutting the flapper out do to the sound of the vehicle? If I didn't remove it, what would be the effect of just a new muffler?

The flapper tames the V4 "chopper' sound when running on every other cylinder. You really don't need it with the Big Block 50 or 70 Series Flowmaster - that is my recommendation with or without the flapper - you will LOVE the Flowmaster mellow sound - and growl at start-up - I sure do.

I am sure any cat back would be much louder - and I was not wanting "too loud" either - and glad to be rid of the flapper without consequences..... Even though that was by chance........... (see my muffler thread linked in my sig).

Think I can tell a difference in the exhaust sound in V4 sometimes now that I have driven it a few weeks - kinda like it is running on every other cylinder sound wise but in a good way. Which it is...... But not noticeable enough that I would call it "chopper" - don't think the typical passenger would ever notice.

Start by cutting the muffler out and replacing it with pipe. It's a cheap mod some think it's just enough sound. Shouldn't cost more than $40 at a muffler shop. If you don't like it or isn't enough sound swap in one of the above mufflers.

I just did the muffler delete myself for $20 and its just enough sound and the cab is still quiet.

If you have the $$ the stainless works system is very well design. Quiet inside the cab until you get on it. The exhaust is louder outside the vehicle but with all the sound deadening I can barely here it versus my ford that had a banks system. No drone

I have the carven tr muffler. It's still quiet but at wot you can hear it decently. And even without my exhaust valve , I have no drone or helicopter chop.

I am having a flow master super 44 installed on Tuesday. I got it on a recommendation from a friend who has it on his dodge. I am somewhat nervous about it being to loud, but we will see Tuesday. I may make a last minute decision to go with the super 40 which is quieter.

They will both be louder over time. Blowmasters rust out quick

If you are going to just swap out the muffler and leave the resonator, not to worry it will not be loud. I did a muffler delete and the sound it perfect with no drone in the cabin at all. Highway is almost dead quiet till you get into the WOT.

The 50 would be a touch quieter - the 40 a touch louder - see this article with video............
