Blown rear main seal

Ok so long story short I found a big oil puddle in my driveway after parking my 14 Sierra with the 5.3. The dealer I took it to said the rear main seal blew and the cause was the combination of cold temperatures and the oil catch can that I put on the vehicle. I installed the elite engineering e2 can with one way check valve. Has anyone else had this issue? They're telling me since I put that system on it voids the warranty and I have to pay for the rear main needless to say I'm pretty pissed

Sorry that happened. Whether or not the dealer is right, you're on the hook.

Let the sh!t show begin. Of course, Elite is going to say their catch can didn't cause it, couldn't cause it. Dealership is going to say, you're paying for it. And everyone on here is going to give their opinion. You're still going to be on the hook... Good luck.

I have two questions. One; how long was the can installed and two; why did you leave the can on if you had that kind of failure? They are so easy to remove and if removed, there is no way they could blame the catch can...

The can has been on less than a year I'd say 8 months max. And as soon as the I saw the oil leak it went to the dealer and they said the can was the cause. It's still there now and will be taken off before it leaves the dealer. From what I gathered on a Google search this isn't a first time deal there's been a few people with this same problem and cause. And just to throw this out there I had almost exactly 2,000 miles on it since the last time I emptied the can

Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act

Requires the dealer/manufacture PROVE it caused the failure. Retaining a lawyer will usually resolve the fuss. Their bluff is that you wont. And yes you shouldn't have to but …….

A dealer can not simply state his belief as a fact and make that stick.

^^^ What he said ^^^
This is the same reason I am not tuning my truck.  I cannot afford to pay for major repairs while fighting the dealer/GM over who is responsible.

Some of us do not have the financial means to retain a lawyer and pay for the repairs or be without our vehicle while the lawyers fight it out.

Hey Dave, can you post some pictures of your Catch Can installed, specifically the hose routing?  Or better yet, just send them to our email address.  [email protected]  [email protected]

Thanks!

And then I'm paying for a lawyer fee so either way I lose

Normally the looser pays the lawyer. Talk to the lawyer before you accept defeat. He wont' take a case he doesn't think he can win if he's unsure of the outcome. He'll tell you so.

That sir is a choice to be made. You made it when you decided to put more money in your ride than your income could handle. If you are going to tell me your income can handle it then you've testified against yourself sir. Hire the lawyer. It cost nothing to listen.

The center one went under the throttle body and the right one with the check valve went to the port above the driveside valve cover

Well, can't see the lines but trust you. I just don't see how that could happen even if the can was completely filled with lead and allowed no flow at all. Wouldn't it just start running like crap, kick a CEL and push a lot more through the valve cover vents into the air-box? I mean, lets take the can out of the equation...if that one little stock line (that's removed for the can install) were to somehow get clogged or blocked you're just gonna blow a rear main?

Do these cans require periodic maintenance?  i.e. do they have to be opened up and cleaned or looked at for flow impedance issues?  Thanks, Catch Can posse!

    • I will admit I haven't experimented much with pressure drops beyond the numbers I put in and part of that is that the numbers I used are fairly low and then found out it would trigger regardless at that 35 psi. Having said that I had tried before had changed the placard pressures and being that I have a 1 ton set to 80 on the placard for the rear I believe it triggered close to 60, the front I don't recall now for sure but thought maybe it could get close to 45 from that factory 60 placard pressure. So I never did figure out if it was a number of psi from placard pressure to the alarm or a percentage of the total placard number as some figured it was like a 25% drop from placard pressure would trigger it. So as to try and answer your question, I believe I set the placard pressure on the front to 47 or so and while I run the front tires at 40, they have dipped below that some if its colder and I haven't put "winter air" in yet and never once have had the front alarm go off. I would say that the answer your looking for is no, that if you set your placard pressure to 45, you have a certain amount of room to drop below that pressure before the alarm will go off.    The pressures you decide to run in your truck, that ends up being what makes sense to you based on what your carrying in your truck or if towing, then have to bump them back up to something that will carry the load in the rear and the fronts typically left at the same pressure. It all comes down to that chart I put the link to and using an accurate roadside scale to be your guide, both unloaded and then loaded to know your minimum safe pressures.    I just wish GM would allow a person to change the readings for the tire pressures to the English system of pounds as I have to look at that goofy metric reading that will never ever jive in my head and will go over and change it just to figure out what they are if need be and then change it back.
    • That part I understand, that the dealer can do it. But I'm not understanding why updates that were available to the truck since it left the factory, or the dealership originally, would not still be available to it without dealer intervention.   I'm thinking along the lines of recalls. They stay available until they are completed, regardless of whether they are in warranty or not, or in the hands of the original owner or not. Why not updates as well, especially since some of those can be safety related also?
    • That's good to know, but I don't think I'll even be running them under 45 in the rear  unless it's on the sand or something but will only be for a short distance anyways!    I didn't read all the instructions in the booklet yet, but do you know let's say I set the rear psi on the placard to 45, will the warning light come on soon as it drops under 45 or is there a percentage it has to drop from the set value before the warning light is triggered?
    • That's bad.  Like, its probably destroying the stub axle the CV slides into.   Do you have a proper lift installed with differential lowering brackets?  Did you install AT4/Trail Boss factory CV axles?
    • Hot? New Jersey? Today? I was working on my old 2000 Silverado 1500 today. Believe me, it was boiling hot today. As it has been.
