Canada does have what is called CAMVAP which is like an arbitration process. Bought my 2014 Sierra 4x4 CC Z71 back in August and the dealer has had it for a combined 11 weeks . New rear end, tires and various other parts and RF balance and it still vibrates. Dealer has been very cooperative and is aware if not fixed next try CAMVAP will become involved.

 

I've had family members that have used the CAMVAP process and it was painful to say that least. Once it was all said and done, they felt it would have been easier just to trade the vehicle in at a different dealership and save themselves the time and stress.

Take it to another dealer. It is obvious that this dealership is using these excuses not to work on your truck because they have no idea how to fix the problem.

They don't get paid to find a problem, they just get paid to fix it once found I believe.

Sadly, I have to add my truck to the long list of ones with vibration issues. Bought in Sept 2014, 2014 Sierra CC SLT Z71 4x4, has 2200km on it. It's had a bit of a vibration from 65-75kph, strongest at 70kph since new only in the steering wheel, definitely couldn't feel it in the peddles or body or anywhere else. So it wasn't too annoying and I honestly think it's the wheels/tires, so finally last week took it in and described the issue and me and service agent agreed it seemed like a balance issue.

 

Dropped off 8am, said they had a busy day, by mid afternoon said they need to keep it over night because they ordered 2 new tires because both on the right side would not balance in spec. So they keep it until the next day, get a call in the afternoon that the new tires are installed and balanced but... still a slight vibration from 70-75kph. He said they can keep it and keep checking the driveline for a bad ujoint, driveshaft etc. or I can come take it for now and see how it is. If I don't like it they can proceed with more work next week.

 

So I pick it up and sure enough it's like the vibration has been narrowed down to more like 70-77kph. I wouldn't necessarily call it less of a vibration, just different, like a bit higher frequency, and actually slightly more annoying than the previous initial vibration that was over a wider speed but slower frequency, and I swear there's a hint of it in the gas peddle now where as there was none before.

 

Anyhow, that's a bummer, and I swear after reading on here I'm still maybe gonna push going another round on the tires and wheels. Because they definitely changed the vibration with 2 days of adjusting and 2 new tires. I'm weary of going down the long road of tearing apart the driveline on my brand new truck.

 

But check out the work order and tell me if it looks like the second of the 2 new tires they got was also a dud with an initial road force balance of 32 lbs and then machine said couldn't balance... then what? the guy said F it and threw it on anyways?

Looks like you need more tires. Spec for 14/15 Silverado/Sierra is 14 or 15. I'll have to look at the tsb again.

  1. Document the before and after Road Force Variation (RFV) numbers on the vibration worksheet located at the end of this bulletin.
Road Force Specifications

P-Metric tires on passenger cars

15 lbs (6.8 kg) or less

P-Metric tires on light trucks

15 lbs (6.8 kg) or less

LT - tires on light trucks

15 lbs (6.8 kg) or less

Note: These numbers are lower than what is currently published in service information as some vehicles react to parts that are near the high limit. These numbers SHOULD NOT be used if you do not have a tire speed related disturbance.

Repair:

  • For any assembly that has an out of balance condition (greater than 0.25 oz), remove the weights and correct the condition utilizing normal balancing techniques.
  • For any assembly having RFV measurements beyond the specification above, vectoring the tire on the rim should be utilized prior to tire replacement. If this does not bring the assembly within specification, the tire should be replaced.

  1. I'm SO glad it's not just me. Now let me say that I came out of a Honda Ridgeline that I ran flawlessly for 7 yrs. maintenance free. As my friends say I have graduated to a big boy truck. I have recently purchased a 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 with the All Terrain package ( I have 750 miles on it). I have also noticed a slight vibration in the truck. In my opinion it feels like the shift points are off and it is in to high a gear. I have a feeling it has to do with the fuel management system that shuts off some of the cylinders. Once you put your foot into it, it goes away and runs perfect and smooth. I have owned several trucks throughout my lifetime when I had my own construction company. My trucks ranged from Fords and Chevy's to the Honda I just came out of. The reason I say all this is because I'm not a suit and tie suburban dad that just bought the truck to look cool. I bought it because I needed a bigger vehicle. I'm taking mine in tomorrow and I hope there is something they can do to fix the problem.

For those experiencing vibration, I trust the vibration is in both V4 and V8 mode, because it would be a waste of time to try to fix vibration that is only in v4 mode. V4 mode will definitely generate some vibration and the bottom line it - we are stuck with it. A V4 engine is inherently rough running. Counterbalancing can correct it, but then it would be horrible in V8 mode. So, GM has to balance it for one or the other, but not both. Since V8 mode is more important, that's where it gets balanced. Bottom line - if V4 mode vibrations are too bothersome, then a GM is not for you. Get a Ford Ecoboost. Not trying to be a smart ass, but that's an unfortunate characteristic of these Active Fuel Management engines. Alternately, get a programmer from the aftermarket and turn the AFM off.

Tbarn, any change you could be so kind to post a like to where I can download the full TSB PI1345B? Would like to have a copy to put with the rest I've been collecting on this issue.

 

Those revised limits are very low. If that is what is truly needed to get rid of the vibration, then we are in for a ongoing pain in the butt. As the tires wear, the RFV will change and if these vehicles are so sensitive that they need perfect balance and RFV, well that will not be good. Maybe on a Ferrari, not not a pickup.

 

Btw, I just helped a buddy swap out the wheels and tires on his BMW. Hunter RFV values after balancing were 7, 24, 23, and 27 lb for the four. Car is smooth as glass all the way up to.... Well, I better not say. Let's just say the speed limiter on the Chevy will have kicked in. So, if that car doesn't need perfectly balanced/RFV wheels and tires, why do these trucks?

Nope, no difference between V4 or V8 mode for my vibe. It is different depending on how hard I accelerate or decelerate through it.

 

I had a 2007 Avy, so I've already had my fun with first gen AFM issues like mysteriously burning a quart of oil on a 2hr trip randomly once or twice a year.

Thanks, that will probably help. I think on mine I gotta find out what went on with that replacement tire that wouldn't balance and they possibly threw it on the truck anyways to see if it was good enough. Hope not, that would be a bad way to start things off.

I have had my truck in the shop for over a month. Road forced the stock goodyears twice (didn't help), got new goodyear all terrain adventures w/ kevlar (my favorite tire, have had on multiple trucks - didn't help), replaced one of the new tires that was slightly out of spec (didn't help), road forced again (didn't help), GM engineering sent my dealership this fancy vibration analysis device.

 

They took apart my front diff and replaced the ring gear (4x4 vibration that I honestly didn't even notice but the shop foreman did) and put new Michelin LTX MS2 on it (for the high speed vibration), road forced, and voila, it's fixed!! :):)

 

They had the Goodyear rep at the dealer over this as well, and he said that TONS of sierras are having problems with Goodyears (especially the Z-71s with 20s on them).

My truck came from factory lifted and giving me the run around will never buy another truck from Chevy Somerset Kenny Ross in Somerset Pa. Once they got your money its funny how they act . Service manager trying to say it's normal to shake ! So my steerung wheel shaking was a design by Chevy? I can't toe anything because it's like driving in a helicopter ! Less then 10000 miles has frame rust

This is like a bad joke they just don't want to pay back the money I paid out sad day for Chevy

    • That's interesting, I assume that would add to the cost of the oil but also I was forgetting to bring up the issue of the low tension rings allowing more oil past which in turn forces the cats to have more oil additives pass through them that wouldn't otherwise so they are creating that problem and of course its all in the name of fuel economy. Mind you the other issue would be the lack of additives that fight the formation of carbon within the piston ring grooves which turn the engine into an oil burner and with in this GM forums case is your average off the shelf Dexos licensed oil, meanwhile the other off the shelf oil being Valvoline's R&P isn't licensed and the only one that is which is that certain Mobil oil that came out recently ( its not even being marketed in Canada ) and only a fraction of vehicle owners are going to be using it out of all the other oils on the shelf or the quickie lube bay that meet the Dexos spec by way of actual licensing.    Also I suspect that its an easy excuse to pool the non turbo DI engines in with the turbo DI engines and design the oil to not have LSPI issues in the most demanding engines and short change the naturally aspirated DI by not offering a higher concentration of additive package they could handle and still not be at risk of LSPI.    I wonder if Amsoil flipped the switch just lately and did whatever packaging designation at the same time as I wonder what oil formulation I would have bought in May, of course I don't know when it was packaged at the factory vs how long it was in storage at the Edmonton warehouse. I know its been said at least in the past that the big players switch over to a reformulated oil but the packaging has not changed until they make that move as well so there is that cross over time where its a new formulation in a predated formula marked package.

    • Sad thing is that this doesn't have to be the case. LSPI can be solved without a reduction in TBN. Swap Ca for Mg.  Cats are not a issue if the OEM can get a ring and valve guide seal even at SN levels of SAPS. Dizzy is purring like a kitten with a bowl of warm milk. 200K of Full SAPS oil and zero detonation issues and nice a clean inside and out. This shouldn't be an issue. It isn't 1920.    Tell ya what AMSOIL SS is excellent at, internal cleanliness. The new formula is even a step up from their already outstanding cleanliness levels. Can't say the OEM offering is quite that clean. There marketing suggest the SS is cleaner.     That is the only defense with at shelf oil. Nothing wrong with them if you ignore the marketing and OEM 'recommended' OCI and use a thimble full of common sense. 😉 You go sir. 
    • I started with a folding cover by BAK PAC on my 2500. It went bad after close to 5 years. Bent and vinyl coming loose. Contacted BAK and they gave me a very good discount on a Revolver. Had it a number of years. Mostly outdoor storage. Some garage storage. Vinyl started to come loose. Still under warranty so they replaced to cover. Sold the 2500, bought the 1500 and got another revolver for it. Had it a couple years now and no issues. I store it indoors. Got a bit of discount when buying it as well. If you are seeing problems, contact BAK or real truck and let them know. Customer service was pretty good. But I think they changed their warranty.
    • I agree, there is no one answer fits all as every rig is different, one may be pulling some little aluminum fishing boat while another is towing a monstrosity that weighs a lot and hopefully the owner if the rig has some prior experience to know what drive mode they should choose.    It also struck me and this is from watching a few of those boat ramp escapades videos in the past, Ford being one of the vehicles that has the auto front axle hubs and sure enough its found out that one hub has crapped out and won't engage and may not have manual hubs to even select on both sides so they are on the boat ramp stuck with no four wheel drive and spinning .... they flat out need a tow to get up the ramp and deal with the vehicles new found issues. That can happen to all brands of pickup, finding out either four wheel drive or 4 low isn't working right at the time its needed it to work as some electronic crap has failed.
