Why on earth would they have to punch holes in the steering wheel? They have already had the air bag and wheel off. The air bag is released from the rear of the wheel. Find another dealer.

Well it's nice to periodically come back to this thread and see some folks getting closer to a fix . I feel for everyone still dealing with the vib issue and everything associated with getting it fixed like the op ^^^^^ that's not good and part of dealing with a truck that has to be in and out of the shop chasing a fix . I almost feel bad jumping ship but it was like a breath of fresh air and sincerely hope you guys and gals get a fix or a new truck . Trust me it's such a relief and so satisfying . Until then hang in there and who knows they may have a fix in the near future hopefully.??

Thursday I went by a local dealer and picked up some take of wheels with 10 miles on them. Took them to Les Schwaub had the sensors changed and balanced. My vibration, which was REALLY bad at 65-75 and the worst at 72 is completely gone. I actually love the truck now runs way smoother than my '13 did now. Will it last I dont know but so far so good.

So after 200 miles on the road today, I can't yet give a solid opinion on these shackles, it's like this truck suffers from multiple personality disorder or something. It rides differently on the same stretch road from one trip to the next. It seems like when the truck has set for a while the ride is pretty decent but if it's been operating for a while like an hour or so the ride is much worse on the same strip of road. My only thought is shock fade possibly road force on the tires, GM says road force can change as much as 25 lbs on tires as they warm up and that's why they should be road forced right after being driven? Anyone else have a theory or notice the same behavior in the sense that the longer you drive the truck the ride quality seems to diminish or change?

Not sure what to tell you on that but I know one thing, I've taken my last ride on Goodyear tires. I took a good run on the highway today and from 73-75 i have a horrible vibration again. Dropped it off at the dealer and they will be getting me a set of Continental LX20's tomorrow. If that doesn't work then I'll need to come up with a new plan of attack. Hell I might even trade in the truck and the S Class and get a GL63.

I hear you on that, I had 3 acuras and a lexus before this truck and gave serious thought to an suv from either one before getting this truck. Now I'm thinking I probably should have.

Same here, I've been spending some time on the ram website building and pricing trucks, kicking myself for going with the truck that looked the best, when I could have got more truck for the money with features GM doesn't even offer.

Haha. I think you've nailed it. Didn't you know these entire trucks are adaptive like the transmissions. Adaptive frames, adaptive shocks, adaptive rear ends, adaptive tires..... But seriously I've noticed the same thing on ocassion. I don't understand why it sometimes get the odd shakes. I had my tires rebalanced and I disabled AFM and my original 70+ mph slight vibration I don't notice anymore but now on roads that are not real smooth it seems to sometimes shake a lot around 50 mph. To me it seems like my shocks are bad but I doubt its that simple of a fix.

If I could get rid of the vibration I have no problem putting a couple grand into suspension improvements to get the best ride possible, I have to get rid of this vibe first. Trucks going back to les schwab too see if the problem is the wheels or tires. Right now it has raceline wheels and toyo at 2's that cause a much more noticable vibration than the factory wheels and SRA's which the goodyears are known garbage tires. Les Schwab assured me they'll stay on it til its fixed even if it means a new set of rims. All 4 tires are below 11 lbs road force variation and the vibration is third order 41 hz at 70 mph so definitely not simple dynamic balance.

Im still waiting for a phone call from a rep named steve.. Wonder if ill ever get it... Not holding my breath. Maybe next time i go to the dealer ill be a complete **** and cause a scene. Doubt that will get me anywhere either.. I just want my frigging truck fixed... Thats not so much to ask.. Im literally about to diagnose and fix it myelf and send gm my bill ...

What style wheels?

The 5 spoke 17"s with Bridgestone tires. I wanted to go with a 17" so I'd have plenty of room for airing down and maybe I made a good decision by going with them, who knows...

I've been following this forum since I bought a new 2014 4x4 double Cab Z71 in Nov.. At 500 miles this truck didn’t feel right. . . My truck has been in for road-force at least 5 times with probably 8 different tires in 10K miles. It had the Ring and pinion replaced and the steering wheel shake under de-acceleration went away, but I agree these trucks are very-very inconsistent. There are times my truck is like glass, then there are times it’s a pile of garbage, I drove at least 8 new 2015 1500 in the last month looking for a smooth one on the highway. and now that I’m looking for it . I’m Still looking for one with a smooth ride. some shake the wheel, some shake the floor some shake the seat some do all three,.

 

In my opinion, the problem is in the new cab body mounts, too stiff of a seat and headrest, and Stiff rancho shocks (too much high speed compression and rebound dampening)all coming together for a problem and annoying ride. Maybe the use of “high strength steel” in the cab structure shifted the resonance of the truck cab too. I’m sure the marketed high strength steel term wasn’t used in conjunction with equivalent metal thickness to give us a stronger cab than the past designs but instead used with thinner sheet metal to reduce weight and cost with the intent of having similar strength. The fact that the 2500’s have similar issues knowing they use the same cab, cab mounts and seats but different frames, engines, axles and tires and rims seems to hold some merit it’s not drivetrain vibration but ineffective vibration isolation from normal driveline and road vibration.

 

The fact that GM is making the dealers roadforce balance tires to less than industry standard specs. To minimize excitation, really solidifies the fact the isolation in the body mounts and cab is garbage.. In theory, if the new hydraulic ( compression and rebound ) body mounts and vibration control (based on all the marketing hype) are in fact better shouldn’t we be able to allow a higher level of tire imbalance and achieve a similar ride to the old body style truck??. My truck shakes when cruising at high way speed 70-75 down the highway on sweeping turns and then the annoying vibration seems to stay.. I really think these body mounts don’t isolate the higher frequency road stuff out and this new lateral mount is allowing a strange shifts in cab to frame alignment. It seems like the longer the highway trip the worse the vibration.. My 2014 in V4 mode is significantly more noticeable than the 07 truck at highway speeds and low speed. Again pointing to the body mounts, shouldn’t the active fuel management V4 mode be even less noticeable then previous designs if the cab isolation control has improved.

It’s actually comical to watch the chevy marketing videos on their website regarding the frame and body mount design and testing and, to hear all the BS about road comfort and vibration isolation improvement. The NVH group dropped the ball. I wish I could get the ride quality and consistency of my 07 extended cab z71 had.

 

I don’t want a truck that requires absolute perfection in tires, rim mounting, tire balance , prop shaft balance, pinion angle , force vectoring, to keep my water bottle, coffee, pant leg, fingers, Dorito’s bag, iphone cable, computer bag, grocery bag, tool bag, cup holder change and my kids head from that annoying shake, perfection in mass production doesn’t exist but this truck design clearly didn’t take into account variation in the design and mfg process.. I’m not a fussy person just pissed this truck is a worse riding experience than my older Silverado’s.

Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
    • Can it still be Assembled II?   Viscosity on the decline by various means. Heat on the rise making that worse. Engine RPM in the tank. Smaller motors with more boost trying to emulate an electric motor. Full torque, zero rpm. Then we will triple the OCI. Argh.    But wait....there is more. LSPI has pushed a shift from Ca to Mg and as that cost more PLUS the run to lower sulfur compounds the TBN is moving in the wrong direction for the increased OCI's demanded.    That not being enough to placate a demand for a parameter they can't measure the other sulfur bearing compounds are also under attack. That would be zinc and phosphorus sulfonate compounds. To some degree those are being replaced with boron esters and others, i.e. titanium ect. All of which have shorter service lives. And there there is the "Secrete Sauce" marketing for AW adds that 'Can't be detected by UOA's" but trust me because I (the blenders) never ever lie.    Spoiler alert; ALL additives are sacrificial! Smaller amounts of the old blended with less robust versions of the new do not equal longer service lives. So what are the blenders recommending? Wait for it.......   MOVING THE GOAL POSTS! OMG      Let's declare the long standing TAN/TBN crossover irrelevant and tell people that soot is a great 'graphite' based lubricant which can aid tribo films. Wait, what? Let's declare that the standards used for oxidation and nitration were to conservative and can be expanded. Let's tell them that because GDI fuel dilution, although being a VISCOSITY KILLER and an acid generator is actually okay because we have better base oils that limit viscosity failure limits. (Said knowing this is measured in fractions of a centipoise and in bases not commonly used in shelf oils)   Lying from the heart is not just the new normal but we have a public, a very young public, that is so ignorant of the facts and so sure of their "RESEARCH" into AI driven models base in regurgitated  instead of scientific research based unvarnished, peer reviewed FACTS that the incoming guard is loosing their grip on reality and the OEM's are tickled pink while the blends bend the knee.    You have an ever limited set of tools to work with. And sooner or later those will be taken from you as the API and the EPA strangle the last remaining fluids from the system. What you have left is your wits. If you care to use them.    At some point in the very near future it will not longer be possible to do "What is best for the machine", and be replaced with "The best you have access too". You WILL be rewarded with half the life and twice the cost. That isn't that hard to predict.         
    • I trust you saw the other comment where he knew what he was talking about !. Yes, these darned newer vehicles with all their so smart they are stupid technology, goes and drains the battery down. As you might see my other comment, I installed a Noco 5 battery tender under the hood and at this point still have the cord routed so I have to lift the hood and then plug it in but am typically parked in a garage or a shed so its not risking the engine hood in the wind. That way I am assured or hopefully so of not finding I have a battery drawn down and can't even start the truck and that also damages the battery to draw it down too far. 
    • I guess no surprise my guesses were wrong !, at least now I know if I ever happen to see it grayed out in my own truck as to what is going on.    I never happened to catch my truck with it grayed out, it seemed every time I would test to see if there was an update it never found anything and yet more than once I would check to see if there was an update and there was nothing, then a day later or even that same morning I would drive to town and after more than one engine shut down in town as I did my errands it would pop up that there is an update now ready to install and the only place I have a connection to the internet is at home by wifi so its not as if it grabbed the download while driving. I don't trust these new vehicles due to all the crap they can decide to do while sitting for some days not running and run the battery down so most of the time if I know the truck will sit for a few days I plug in the battery tender I have mounted under the hood and so the only time the truck must have downloaded software was when it was sitting in the garage where the signal is awful but I have that tender plugged in and somehow it managed to download it. I honestly detest all this crap, way to easy to leave a person stranded.    Since I don't trust any of it I don't do the install of the already downloaded software until I get home and sometimes have even sat in the truck to watch what its doing as its going through the process to its conclusion as its not like it is set up that it will tell you the next time you fire up the engine that the update that was initialed actually installed or installed properly. Yes I can go into the updates and see the list. After I go through the install where I feel its safe to do so in case it breaks down as a result, I will plug in the battery tender after the fact to recharge as I don't know how much power its taking just to do the install and that can take a while for it to install. 
    • Thanks for the reply. All settings were correct and the engine was off, as it was supposed to be. It turned out to be something simple. I took a drive for about an hour. I must have had a low battery without knowing it. The voltage gauge on the display looked ok. At the end of my drive, I shut off the engine and the update prompt came up and it updated normally. It’s ironic because one of the features of the update is a reduction of battery drain.
