It's hard to believe that a billion dollar company with unlimited engineering resources can't (or won't) figure out what their flagship truck's vibration problem is. They either know and don't want to have a recall or publish TSB's for a couple million trucks,or they would rather piss around handling the problems individually hoping that a customer will just tire of it all, or have the occasional buy-back, have the customer get the same issues with his new buy-back.

 

To a large degree the dealer's hands are tied because they just can't spend money on GM's engineering problems without getting reimbursed for their warranty work. For everyone that posts here about the issue there are 10 more out there that that don't.

 

We can send people to the moon, build multi-billion dollar aircraft carriers, supply 20 million dollar golden parachutes to retiring or fired GM execs, and GM can't or won't fix the flagship vehicle's vibration complaints.

Exactly. Best looking pickups on the road these day, imo. All I want is to have it fixed, or at least have the fix leaked to the public so I may have the opportunity to fix it myself.

Yukon gear, they build axles and rear end parts for all makes and models. Just Google Yukon gear

Small update on my 16 LTZ-Z71 Crew-Short 6.2l, 20" goodyear tires. Vibrations most pronounced in the 70-80mph range. Significantly worse on new, smooth concrete. Violent enough for my kid to become sick in the back seat.

1st visit late Oct. - Tires balanced within spec but was out-of-round upon visual inspection. Dealer replaced 1 tire. Vibrations remain.

2nd visit mid Nov. - Dealer finds 3 remaining tires out of spec for balance, recommends replacement though goodyear tires are on backorder for 3-6 weeks. Obviously issue unresolved.

3rd visit mid Dec. - 3 tires replaced and service notes state the vehicle was road tested and found to be good. Literally 10 miles from the dealership the pickup is bouncing down the highway, this time in the 65mph range. A short jump up to 75 reveals the vibration is still there.

 

We're supposed to be using this vehicle to travel to my old stomping grounds for Christmas and absolutely do not want to bounce the whole way there and back again. The dealer Service Advisor has an appointment set up for Thursday to get it back in, and will be supplying a service loaner.

The SA is great, never once trying to dodge the issue and even though their tech says 'it's all good' on paper, continuing to treat it as a valid issue that needs to be resolved.

 

I like the truck quite a lot and the best outcome is for the issue to be resolved (or minimized enough to be a non-issue), but at what point do I start aiming for a buy-back or pursuing Lemon Law options? I do have some concerns about the long-term effects of that much shaking on everything else on the truck.

Bolts will come loose naturally with any shaking, but I would be more concerned with the long-term effects the shaking will have on the kid. If your kid got nauseated or vomited, these are concussion symptoms. You may want to take your kid to see a doctor and ensure you keep the record of the visit attributed to your shaking truck!

The thought of concussion did not occur to me, mostly because I grew up with motion sickness myself and a stop at fast food preceding the event has me thinking it was a simple upset stomach triggered by an hour of shaking.

I should put it into perspective.. it wasn't SO violent I felt the need to immediately get off the highway (or even choose to drive under 60 on the freeway) but bad enough that I wouldn't want a full cup of coffee in there.

Maybe not enough people are having the issue to warrant a serious redesign/fix. We've only had a hundred or so people on here complaining about the issue. If it was as huge of an issue as we want to believe it is, I believe there would be a lot more complaining by consumers out there.

They come down the same assembly line with the same parts coming in from other vendors. Im not sure how some have shakers and others dont? Guess I just have bad luck...

Well, it happens! Some things just can't be explained! It sucks! Especially when you're the one who ends up with a shaker and your next door neighbor does not!

Unfortunately it does happen. Has your neighbor changed anything on his truck since he bought it? I want to try and replace the SRA tires with Michelins, doubtful it will help though.

I just replaced both rear axles with Yukon axles and took it for a test drive on the interstate for about 45 minutes. I set the cruise at 82 mph and that's where it use to shake the worst. I don't want to say the wobble is 100% gone just yet bc it felt like it was there sometimes and I don't know if I'm just super sensitive to it now. It defiantly is smoother at highway speeds after the axle replacement. I will update the issue later after I take an extended trip on the highway.

Did you have runout issues on the rear hubs or did you decide to install the Yukon's in hopes of fixing the vibration issues?

I never took actual measurements of the run out because the axle flange was out of round.

After installing them, I have not felt the shake again. I'm going to wait a couple of more weeks of driving before I say the truck is shake free. Edited by MRW412

How much did you end up paying for the axles, They seem to run in the $250-275 range. Putting it somewhere around 600 dollars to swap them yourself including fresh oil for the diff.

It ended up being right at $650 for axles, seals, fluid, and lug nut studs.

    • 2017 Silverado L83 5.3l 6speed transmission Hello, not a new member but havent posted in a while and my old signup info isnt working so had to create a new account. anyways, I have an issue with my truck and hope someone can spread some light on whats happening: -when it goes to 4cyl mode it makes a clunk sound (but not when coasting or going downhill) -when in 4 cyl mode and under load it makes a load pulsating sound (not a tick). -goes away completely when in M5 gear or when plugging in an AFM delete. Im guessing it is one of 2 things but im not convinced of either to be honest. 1. lifter stuck in v8 mode 2. torque converter shudder realistically it doesn't seem like the TC as there is no physical vibration , and it never happens in v8 mode. but maybe? and wouldnt a lifter make a sound whether with load or not? any ideas let me know please. thank you!  
    • Which has made me wonder with the various engine failures of a few brands in the last few years, is it sub par materials such as lifters etc causing failures, or bearing clearances on the crank etc or perhaps bad designing of an engine physically or causing too much load on the components due to the hp/torque they can push out of them. Or is the oil viscosity and additive package of current oils or a lack of oil flow by an oil pump not able to supply sufficient oil at idle or under high load at low rpm. Or is it every item I listed that combined together has pushed the limits so far to the left that there is hardly a margin of safety left and add in some fuel dilution and too long of an OCI and premature engine failure is the result ?. 
    • He is not saying that an SAE *W20 will have more viscosity than a *W40 due to MORE VII polymers. He is saying that although multiple *W40 may post in the PDS the same or similar 100 C and 150 C viscosities that the blenders choice of modifier TYPE and AMOUNT to get his chosen base to grade will not give identical real world viscosities in shear and at temperature. All will pass the SII test but not all will pass the 100 C HTHS (unpublished value) testing the blender does and relies on to get the required by law "percentage improvement' referenced to his last great work.    Tis the problem with the lie. Once told others are required to support it. 
    • I have a `25, 1500 that auto sets on incline. Never knew that at first. I have the electronic shifter. Just think if it didn`t do that? Unlike a mechanical shift that you can muscle out of park, how would you get this thing out? That would be a problem.   What I found out later is, I don`t have to push the button to release. Just put it in gear.   Setting parameters? Don`t know if it`s possible.

I usually set the parking brake (habit) when on flat ground for typical driving.    When backed down on the launch ramp to launch the boat and I place gear selector into Park, the parking brake activates automatically. My second nature is to set parking brake manually and noticed I was turing the parking brake off.  The parking brake appears to be setting itself automatically.   I looked all over my owner's manual and only found references to being on an incline and manually setting parking brake, or at times parking brake will be auto engaged, but nothing specific to my situation.    When is the parking brake automatically engaged?  Under what specific circumstances?  Can the auto set parameters be changed?     I like the auto set feature.  It would be nice if always engaged when shifted into Park and released when shifted out of Park (like my wifes 2025 RAV4).   Thanks!
