Here's the response I got from Jennifer from GM:

 

Regarding the squeaky noise, I was able to reach out to the service manager. They did reach out to our engineers where they did determine that the noise that you are experiencing is normal electric motor noise.

So apparently Chevy is calling this a normal noise and we need to put up with it. Baffles me that that they'd bill this as the quietest truck out there. I can see the asterisk now. ****quietest truck from the outside world *****However our "normal" operation in 4wd/Auto may cause some owners to go bat s**t crazy. GM needs to fix this and not call it normal, as I've owned many 4wd verhicles and this is the first time I've experienced anything like this.

I guess I have to take mine in since it's normal and mine doesn't make the noise. Sounds like BS to me!!

Hmm. I just picked mine up yesterday, and had it in auto 4wd until I hit the highway. Haven't noticed the sound yet, but I've barely put any miles on it. I will pay attention next time I drive it and report back with my findings.

Well according to our GM rep it's normal so if it doesn't make the noise then you have something wrong with it. Better take it in. Sounds like someone is blowing smoke up all forum members 5th point of contact. emwink.gif

The amount of times I've heard it's normal... My 2013 6.2 started out at a tick in the engine at about 6000 km....Took it to 3 different dealers about it, all said it was normal. When I traded it off two days ago,at 40,000 km it was a CLACK CLACK CLACK CLACK. It subsided a bit when the motor warmed up, but the thing literally sounded like it as going to blow up. They gave me 41k for it! plus 3500 refund from insurance I paid.

 

But yeah... I should be concerned if my truck is totally silent, according to the all these expert opinions.

That high frequency noise in Auto 4x4 has been going on since 2007. Its normal. My 2012 does it, the older ones I've driven do it, the 2014 I drove as a loaner did it.

Those of you that don't hear it how old are you? I'm not trying to offend anyone by saying this but you get older you can't hear certain frequencies and this is a very high pitched noise...

I'm 51 recent hearing test all zero's and minus -1s. Hearing is perfect. So much for the age theory!

They might not be testing into the range that this is at. It's extremely high. Beginning at age 40 certain frequencies start to become inaudible...

I find it happening in 4WD auto not 4WD hi

 

That noise is emitting either from the transfer case control module in the dash or the encoder motor on the transfer case. Electrical feedback?

 

During the Auto 4WD mode, the power flow is the same as it is in the 4HI mode. Except, during the Auto 4WD mode, the 2/4 wheel drive actuator assembly (13)

rotates the control actuator shaft to the correct torque level positions. Rotating the control actuator shaft to the various positions changes the clutch torque level.

When a difference of front wheel speed to rear wheel speed isrecognized, the transfer case control module commands for more or less clutch torque.

Big snowstorm in midwest yesterday and truck performed EXCELLENT in heavy snow 8-12" in 4x4HI. Excellent control at 40-50mph on snowy highways. HOWEVER, driving to work this morning in 4x4HI i did hear this high frequency sound and it drove me nuts. Late 20's and good hearing, i could even hear it over a 20-25% radio volume. Couldn't hear it yesterday b/c so much snow on the road all you could hear was wheels plowing snow, now with it cleared i could hear the noise distinctly. I will mention to dealer to be on the record when I go in for 14008 soon.

 

GM Reps: This is a problem, please ask engineering to come up with a solution. This flies in the face of the marketing campaign for quietest cabin and is embarrassing in that regard. Please respond with what is being done to find a solution, "normal noise" is not one.

Well I had a nice 2 week reprieve from going bat sh*t crazy, due to lack of snow and running in 2wd. However the past week the snow came back and the need to run in Auto and thus the return of my disgust driving around in my $50k truck. I trully love everything else about this truck, I went from Escalade EXT and can honestly say the Chevy is a better quality vehicle with this one exception.

 

My wife really doesn't hear it, so I think there is something to the fact that some people may not be able to hear this. In my opinion cranking the radio or waiting until I'm old enough for my hearing to deteriorate is not an option. Chevy tells me to go my dealer. Dealer calls into tech support and tells them this is normal, nothing they can do. So what am I realistically to do?

 

Dear customer service reps on these boards get this fixed and get it fixed now. This is not an idle threat, at age 33 I'm on my 4th new gm vehicle and control over what my company orders every year which has been averaging 10 vehicles a year the past 7 years. We already have been leaning toward Ford as of late. This lack of response by Chevy is sealing their fate. I realize a measly 10 vehicles per year isn't a game changer for Chevy, but it's all I got.

Hey all. Just picked my truck up on Dec 31 and of course it was snowing the day I got it. It took me a bit to figure out what this high pitched noise was. At first I removed all the loose change from the small storage area above the 4wd knob area thinking it was coins rattling. But the noise was still there. Removed all the keys except for the truck key thinking it was that. That didn't work. Then with all the snow we have been having I found that if I am in either auto or 4wd the noise is there at the switch. Glad I found this forum because I thought I was going crazy. I have had others listen and they all are hearing it. It definitely changes pitch based on road conditions. I agree with the others that this sound can be at times extremely annoying. I was going to bring it in but it sounds like most of us are being told to live with it. This is my first Chevy truck and find it very nice but I am hoping that this problem is resolved.

      Late reply, but yes—it works on the SLT trim. Compatibility comes down to the plastic shroud shape behind your mirror, not the trim badge itself. On the SLT with auto-dimming, it uses a plug-and-play Y-harness off the mirror/rain sensor power, so no need to run wires down to the OBD port. If anyone's ever unsure about fitment, just drop a photo of your mirror housing and we can double-check it.   Appreciate the detailed feedback on the install! On the windshield glare—we actually took feedback like yours and developed a dedicated CPL (polarizer) filter to cut down dash reflections on sunny days. If you're still running the cam, shoot me a DM. I'd be happy to send a CPL filter over for you to test out—no charge.

      After I wrote that reply I went for a ride. 85 F out. So trans started at 85 F and it shifted the same as it did an hour latter at 168 F. I've never actually recorded the to cold to shift point but it is under 32 F before they start hanging on to a lower gear or leaving the converter unlocked. Both intended to heat fluid.    Yes, brake or bake. Absolutely.      Your welcome. True research ended decades ago. Field trials are still in play.    There is a thing called oxidation onset temperature. This is the heat related oxidation not the O2 exposure kind. For mineral oil that starts at 140 F. So what happens after 140 F? Each 20 F cuts fluid life in half! Does using a Full Synthetic improve that? Yes! By how much? Depends on the base oil type and a few other factors. But enough to notice. Some esters are even higher. There are even synergies between types the will raise it higher than any one component is alone.    Then there is "Hindered" oils. Antioxidant additives. Hindered Polyol Esters can sit at 500 F for years in a turbine.   When a blender brags his oil will 'take 500 F" in service he doesn't specify for how long. Water will dance on a 500 F hot plate for several seconds. @newdude put up a chart showing the relationship between fluid temperature and it's life in an automatic transmission. Here's a version of that chart for Group III based oils. These temperatures are those in the pan as observed as 'normal'. that is you drive as you do for as long as you do under what load you ask of it and whatever that temperature is this graph applies to. Flash temperatures of a few minutes isn't what his means.    Note that fluids held at a constant 240 F have a service life of only 20K miles. 220 F explains the factory exchange limit, eh? My equipment I keep under 180 F and I'm good if the cooler will hold it as low as 140 F. But that's me.
