The trouble begins, no start

My truck was built mid November so the updates should be done. I should check into the rear window to make sure I have the updated parts although mine seems to be working fine so maybe it has the updated parts?

Mine was November build too and I think it's new part. Although I am sure it's not the best way to do things, I had my passenger roll it back and forth over a hundred times during a trip just to see if it would malfunction. No problems

This is really encouraging for someone contemplating buying a new 2014 truck! In fact, after reading all these posts I will definitely wait at least another year.

Hello: I have a 2014 Silverado, Just this morning I went out to start my truck as I was coming off night shift, had it plugged in all night also, It started great like it usually does, I went back inside came out 15 mins later and it was shutdown on its own, I started it back up but it was runing very rough and quit within seconds, A warning came up on the display saying that the batery was low and I should start the vehicle. After trying for about 5 mins it wouldn't even run it would just crank over, It seemed to crank fine but I did notice that the Volts were down to around 9-10. Called on-Star and they sent a tow truck out to pick it up from site, It was also very cold at -30c. I have never had any problems with it so far and have 20,000km's on it. The worst part was that the dealer said they cannot get me fixed up until Dec 27 which is very annoying as I would have hoped they would take 10 minutes out of there day to at least try to trouble shoot it, probably just a bad battery or something simple, I guess Iam out of a truck for the x-mas season and I really need this truck!! Otherwise this is probably the best most comfortable and fuel efficient truck I have owned (And I have had many), I put on no less that 300km's per day.

took my truck to the dealer and said if the truck cranks but does not start it is most likely the flapper valve in the exhaust freezes shut they have seen many do this and you can manually break it free infront of the rear passenger tire and it should start.

If I am not mistaken, these exhaust control valves are similar to one installed on some motorcycles. They partially close the exhaust at idle and low speed to provide for maximum torque at those speeds and then open instantly as the throttle is opened. The valves are controlled by an actuator which in turn is controlled by the engine ECU. This is the set up on my motorcycle. The failure mode of the valve should the actuator fail is wide open, for that reason the valve is spring loaded.

I guess I can see how the butterfly valve could freeze shut because it will be partially closed when the engine is off. However, on my motorcycle, if this happened, i would get a fault light because when you first turn the ignition on, the ECU cycles the valve to ensure a full sweep. Corresponding voltage signals are sent by the actuator to the ECU which then determines the well being of the actuator valve. You can still start and ride the bike if something is outside of set parameters, but the fault light will remain on.

FYI: Thanks Brendon444 for that exhaust flapper info, I drove over to the dealer lot & decided I have nothing to lose for checking out the flapper valve, "it was frozen shut", I broke it free and the truck started up great and ran smooth, I will now steal my own truck from the dealer lot and call them to let them know what was wrong, I can see that this valve will have to go, not too sure what its purpose is though, there is no electrical hookups to it at all, appears to be mainly for backpressure??

Yes, you are correct. If the flapper was in fact the issue, then it had to be from back pressure, because there is definitely no connection between the flapper and anything else on the vehicle. I examined mine with a microscope (so to speak) when we removed it less than 24 hours after I took delivery. I live in Alabama, so there would never be a chance that it would freeze up, but my exhaust guy ( a huge exhaust performance guy in these parts) said the flappers had caused numerous problems on the new Camaros, mainly from noises if makes when flapping back and forth while driving. We removed my entire system from just behind the cats. My current system is absolutely perfect. Glad to hear you resolved the issue. Annother gold star for this forum!

Glad you figured out the problem and didn't have to wait, disappointing the dealer couldn't take 2 minutes to check,my dealer said it was a common problem.

Just an update the dealer said my problem was likely caused by to much grease on solenoid connector for the starter which confirms what another was told by different dealer and it should go away after more starts and it has seemed too so far.

Now my next question is my remote start wont work when it gets down to -30 and starts fine with the key and with remote start once it is warmed up..? what is the point of remote start if it wont work when I need it.

Just curious-have you tried using the OnStar app for the phone and using the remote start feature on that, think they call it RemoteLink or something? I've installed it and it works just like the key, open the app, type in your pin and 30 seconds later it says the vehicle is started. Takes a bit longer but you don't have the distance limitations that you do with the key fob, might help narrow it down as to if there is something with the receiver or key fob.

Not supported on my phone blackberry q10 (im one of the 2 ppl in the world with one haha) Only happens when cold -25 or colder it seems. Was excited for the onstar app till I found out my phone is not supported.

Ive had this no start issue plague me twice and leave me stranded both times. Most recently last night. I'm also in Canada where it is well below freezing.

I tried breaking free the flapper valve and low and behold it was frozen shut. It would not move. All I had to do was bang it with my hand so the spring on the valve compresses. Once it compressed I was able to move the valve freely by hand. The truck started easily. Now I know what to do next time.

I will be bringing this up with my dealership first thing tomorrow. I would prefer it gets removed. It's completely pressure actuated and very susceptible to issues by design and location especially in extreme temps.
