Adding stand alone GPS to 2014+

I added an aftermarket GPS to my truck. The factory GPS cost more and the aftermarket options have some features that I like. I ended up getting a Garmin Nuvi 3597 to replace my trusty old Tom Tom. The Tom Tom was over 4 years old and starting to have a few problems. I travel a great deal for work and a good GPS is a wonderful thing to have. So far this Garmin unit has worked great, better than I had expected. The voice input works very well, you can speak addresses while driving instead of having to type stuff. Auto-dimming for night and day lighting. It also has traffic information that it gets from radio stations – and this also works very well, something that I had not used before and I thought it was going to be a gimmick. This Garmin unit has a magnetic mount that makes removal easy – no clips or cords to unplug, easy to remove at hotels, etc.

I don’t like cables and things floating around, so I hard wired it into the factory accessory outlet. The radio surround trim is aluminum and surprisingly strong. I made a bracket and mounted it to the trim. It is positioned so that it does not block my view out of the front window and is within reach.

How did you harfwire this? Did you cut off the cig lighter plug and splice it or did you hard wire another 12v outlet behind the dash?

clean install. but your crazy for drilling into your dash on such a brand new truck... I would never hard mount a GPS to the dash like that because thieves see that and break in and steal it... if I need to use a GPS ill use my phone.

whats so crazy about drilling into an easily replaceable dash piece? Remove it, don't like the holes, call the dealer and order one.

I was simply stating my opinion and that is all, as I could not drill into my brand new truck, but he is not me and to each their own. I also stated that thieves see that and know what you have inside your truck so will break in and take it since it is out in the open.

Phone GPS also requires data if you are using google maps unless pre-fetch the map area while on WIFI.

Has anyone tried a "cd slot mount" to hold their GPS? I wasn't sure how well it will work since our CD slot is recessed some into the dash.

I was looking to try this mount: http://www.amazon.com/Mountek-nGroove-6000g-Garmin-StreetPilot/dp/B00BGKQHQ4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1408556398&sr=8-1&keywords=gps+cd+slot+mount

Anyone?

I've never even seen these before. Depending on how much that mount opens up you may be able to just us the recessed area

^hey good idea, didn't think of it that way. It looks like it would open up and wedge itself within that recessed area, and then you won't have to worry about damaging the cd slot. Maybe I'll order one soon and try it out. I was just looking for an alternative to the windshield suction mount.

edit - I checked their website and it does say you can insert the blade into the CD slot or an existing dashboard groove.

I was trying to find an exact measurement but I didn't come up with anything. I use my garmin daily; I have the indash nav but it doesn't compare the garmin. Right now I have the wire running from the outlet over the steering wheel up to the left bottom corner of the windshield. I hardly ever use the cd player so if something like this would work I'll definitely pick one up.

I like it except for the fact that you used screws.....

....and that you're listening to BPM. :P

I have the cd slot mount for my phone. You can use it but it will bock the controls for either the account or radio.

It's a tight fit, but it does work.

Here are a couple of shots of the mount in case anyone wanted to see it.

It works but you're sacrificing the part of the controls.

The cd slot cannot be damaged by this. Maybe scratched... I've used this in my previous honda and never had a problem.

After you tighten the screw down, it's not coming out of there without a fight.

thanks for posting pics, it really does block alot of the controls (especially if I get a 5" gps screen). Might have to consider another option.

I don't have the trailer brake control so there is the little cubby hole in the top left corner of the dash, wonder if you can rig something up there to hold a gps?

They also have the holders that clip into the A/C vents, but I don't think they work on vertical vents like our trucks have?
