Radio Reception Issues

Okay, I have been following this thread for a while. I do not usually listen to fm since I hate all the commercials. But I decided to try it for the last three or four days. It works very well in HD or regular fm in both of my trucks. I do live in the DFW area but some of the stations are 30 miles or more from me. I was just wondering if some of you that are having problems may live out in a rural area where Xm may not pick up well. Just curious.

I'm in the suburbs or a rural setting but regardless of where we live the problem is that all other vehicles pick up the local and long distance stations and always have. The 2014 will only pick up very strong signals if you are close enough to them. When I travel with it on any FM station it goes out quickly and I hit seek to the next strong station and it doesn't take long for that one to fade out and in a short distance of 30 miles to a doctor appointment I had to hit seek 5 times! I live in Mingo Junction, Oh near Steubenville, Ohio and 20 miles north of Wheeling , WV where my favorite station is and have no problem listening to it in any vehicle but my 2014 GM. Pittsburg, Pa. stations always come in here but not on my 2014!!! If you live close to your favorite station , you may not notice a problem until you travel.

well, lilke I said I rarely listen to FM due to all the commercials. But is does work well for me in the DFW area. When I travel its always XM and has been for years. Thanks for the info.

I have been told that you monitor the GM truck forum but as of yet we have not seen a response from you on the radio issue. I purchased a new 2014 GMC Sierra Z-71 from 1Cochran of Robinson, Pa. While I have made other trips to the dealer for waves and dents in my truck and a recall on the seat back cables; I also have made four trips for poor radio reception. They have taken antenna apart and cleaned paint off to bare metal for ground and tightened up the antenna. They have looked for an adjustment for weak fm staion but to no avail. They have tried shutting down the HD on each station and finally they even had me come up and take another 2014 home to see if it had better reception in my area. Nothing has worked and they have determined it is a problem with all 2014's. I am very tired of sitting in a waiting room for hours over and over. Also the trip is an hour each way being a two hour trip and with me being a diabetic and sitting there for hours, I have had to eat out at restaurants each time. This is getting expensive and my time is valuable as well.. I have found on the forum that this is not an isolated incident. I am 62 years old and never have I had a vehicle that could not pick up my favorite local station which is only 20 miles away and has a very strong signal strength. We would be interested to know if GM is aware of the problem and would like to know what are they going to do about it? I switched from a loaded 2012 Dodge Ram for this truck and now wondering if I made a bad choice. I do know that there is a lemon law in Pa that takes affect once you have been back for the same problem 3 times. I have put a lot of time and money into my truck since it left the factory. I had the dealer paint silver racing stripes on hood and tailgate and clear coated as well. I had spray in bedliner done. I had chrome step boards installed. I also have had dual exhaust installed. I take much pride in my vehicles and put much effort and time in them. When I purchase a vehicle I look for quality, performance, and style. I believe I have found a quality vehicle but very surprised to find radio reception problems in our day of electronics and knowledge. Do all the radios have this problem? I do not have a dvd player in mine but do have a cd player and a back up camera. If the dvd radio does not have the same problem then please upgrade me. I would have been willing to pay the difference but now that I have so many hours of time, miles on my truck, costs of meals, and price of gas, I think I am owed something for my inconvenience. If you contact a lemon law attorney. You may be able to get all your money back, even for upgrades.

 

I plan on using lemon law also, the FM radio reception is a huge disappointment.

Has anyone received any response concerning the FM reception issue from anyone at GM?

I hope all the problem trucks are going to the dealer so they can get a case string going for the FM. Enough dealer visits and write ups will move GM. Not emails to Jen...

 

On the trucks that went to dealer, did they go into the dash an assure antenna etc... all hooked up properly?

The lemon laws only apply to safety related issues. I have gotten money back 2 times one for windows that kept short circuiting in the rain (can't get out in an emergency) and once for a gas tank that kept leaking fumes in to the passenger compartment. Don't think they will consider the radio an issue. These internet reps are like the close door button in an elevator, they don't really do anything they just give people the illusion something is going to happen

I have been to the dealer, the problem is most dealers are located near large population centers and the radio works fine sitting on the dealers lot or driving a mile or so around the dealer. This problem occurs when I leave the immediate area of the radio station(for me about 20 miles). I have duplicated routes with different vehicles and the FM receiver in the Sierra starts to lose signal many miles before other vehicles or the 2010 Silverado I traded in. For the amount of money GM is charging for there trucks in believe that they should investigate our concerns and come up with a solution, I will continue to work with the service department at my dealership(they have been helpful and I have no complaint with them)still waiting to here from GM.

Pa Lemon Law: Under the law, the manufacturer must, at no cost to the purchaser, repair or correct any defect which substantially impairs the use, value or safety of the vehicle and which occurs within one year after delivery, or 12,000 miles of use, or the term of the manufacturers express warranty, whichever comes first. If the defect cannot be repaired after 3 attempts, or if the vehicle is out of service for a total of 30 calendar days for repair, generally, you may be eligible for a replacement vehicle or the refund of the purchase price, less a limited allowance for use.

Lemon Law is not just for saftey related issues. Friend of mine, got full refund for a leaky sliding rear window. There are also cash settlements and you keep vehicle.

So your "friend" got a full refund because all three of the new rear window assemblies also leaked? Well I guess we should add leaky windows to the list to watch out for.

The dealership could not stop his rear window from leaking.

There is a rock station I listen to locally if I'm not on XM, I've noticed their signal not being as strong as it once was, reason I say this is we ride dirt bikes on a small farm about 20 miles from the signal tower, this past summer I could barely get a signal when the summers before it was never an issue, this was with my 07 2500HD. Today it's no different with my 14 1500. I do know this same station streams online, with them doing that maybe they are reducing their FM signal to save on costs??? Just a thought.

that is not the case for me anyway as I can get the stations in clearly with my other vehicles in my area but not in my 2014 GM Sierra

    • hello I recently bought a 2012 gmc 1500 with a 5.3 and have a AFM disabler on it I'm interested in doing a cam but I'm worried if I remove the AFM system I will fail smog does anyone have info if they are able to detect that or a work around to it (not talking about hot smogging) please let me know thank you  
    • Update. I started chasing down my symptoms. Started first with pulling valve covers and looked at everything. Everything looked good and couldn't hear or feel anything different. Then a compression test. 240 psi or really close on each cylinder. I was worried I was a tooth off of timing. Not bad for an engine with 173,000. Granted I did put new heads on. I sprayed water around the injector area to see if I could hear a change. Nothing. I hooked up my new hp tuner which I should have done in the first place but I don't really know what I'm looking at just yet but am learning. I noticed the fuel trims were way off so that told me I have to have either a bad injector or exhaust leak. New injectors, so I did the shop vac on blower and in the tail pipe. Sprayed soapy water and found the exhaust flange on the drivers side was leaking. I didn't think it would be that considereding I pulled the heads and left the manifolds attached. I did have the transmission replaced not long ago. They must have not seated them properly but I guess I didn't notice. I put in new gaskets on both sides. Which by the way isn't a bad job but I had a hard time getting them to seal right. Took two attempts. Reset the fuel trims and the ticking is gone, engine runs smooth and acceleration has improved. Got to feel the real difference with that stage 1 cam. It's not that big of a difference but it does add a little more. It feels like how the truck should have been from the factory.
    • Can it still be Assembled I?    Stribeck says that we need a certain amount of viscosity under conditions of load and velocity to prevent two surfaces of a know roughness from tearing each other asunder. And we have marketing trying to tell the masses that those two surfaced require less of that commodity due to more exact limits being placed on the same old clearances. We also know that there are limits to how hard something can before it becomes to brittle to be viable and to smooth to 'wet' the surface and that both of those conditions have been known and met since about the Second World War.    That viscosity value shook out at 10 centistokes at 212 F just under a hundred years ago.  Give this a look: [Anton Parr]     What is advertised is the Kinematic viscosity (mm2/s) or that which has been density adjusted but the value we are after is the dynamic viscosity (mPa.s) or true viscosity. You can see that this number is dependent on density thus base stock and temperature. You can also see that an SAE 30 doesn't reach that value in this example. However an SAE 30 that is at the upper end of the SAE 30 range; 12.5 cSt (mm2/s), might. 12.5 * .83 = 10.375 (mm2/s). If you could find an SAE 30 at the upper end these days.   Then there is the complication of viscosity modifiers or VII or VM, whatever you wish to call them. Polymers added to very thin base oils, perhaps 3 to 6 cP oils, that will meet the SAE *W30 spec at 'tested' shear rates and 100 C/212F  target temperature. So a polymer fortified base that is a fraction of the 10 cP requirement Stribeck insist upon.   This could be all well and good if those polymers didn't have two very problematic 'features'. They shear or loose viscosity both 1.) permanently and 2.) temporality. And they do both omitted in the advertised data with the distinct  purpose of deceiving the consumer of the actual operating state of the fluid. I've shown the example of Warren Oils COSTCO 10.91 cSt 5W30 formuation several times where the 100 C HTHS value is 6.9 cP!! That's the temporary shear down and with and SSI or shear stability index of 9.4 cSt. Note the intentional deception in using mixed units?    After a short while that 9.4 cSt oil has a viscosity corrected dynamic value of 7.8 cP. But as the SSI is still within the range of an SAE *W30 whose lower value is 9.3 cSt.    This allows them to continue to call this SAE 16 weight oil a 30 weight, the cake, and still meet the API requirements for fuel efficiency IMPROVEMENT mandated by the EPA. The eating of the cake. By the time you've worn out your motor doing the responsible thing by adhering to the warranty requirements, (the stick), you get deprived of the carrot, wear control. So sad, to bad.   So what can be done? Do I need actually say? [Anton Parr]       Even this must be monitored if the oil is on the low side and the VII an organic or you opt for a 0W40 with an even lighter base oil and more / higher MW VII. (Note the lower density of the 40 weight versus the SAE 30 mono-weight?)    There is another workaround. Temperature. An SAE *W30 run at a bulk temperature of between 180 and 195 F.    Being the belt and suspenders sort I am I do both. Run it cook and run it heavy.    In Part II I'll work the AW package. 
    • So, do I go elbow-deep on this thing or list it for sale and play dumb? Seems to "runs good."   I'm about $1200 away from having: -a rebuilt injector ($300) -a new cat ($250) -a new cat back exhaust (OE style) ($300) -a new AC compressor ($200) -AC refrigerant charge ($150)   In theory, this should rectify the obvious detracting issues from its value and operability. Cold AC with a non-squeaking AC pulley both sounds and feels good. An exhaust that isn't cut/hacked in 17 different places and doesn't vibrate on a crossmember would make it sound and feel less janky. A working cat would help the stink, and will save the earth, but *if and only if* the fuel system is working properly, which would also address the intermittent "rich" CEL.   Heard a good one... CEL for "Rich condition" means you haven't spent enough money on the truck lately, and it's letting you know.   Rebuilding the injector would seem to be the most important part. Replacing the cat would be secondary. I don't think mine is plugged or overly restricted, but it might be a little restricted? I have no good way to tell other than seat of the pants feel. I hate the smell.   The current theory is I have a rich idle problem: A bad fuel pressure regulator, or a leaking injector(s) being the highest probabilities. I already replaced the FPR but that doesn't mean its replacement isn't also bad. It was a new part from Dorman, but the packaging looked like it had been sitting on a shelf for 20 years.   This is the (single) upstream O2 sensor shown at idle. I'm getting a lot of "rich" it seems. Sometimes it stays high like that and doesn't drop down. That makes me think it's processing injector leaks or a partially stuck open injector.     Other times it looks like this. Nice oscillations between rich and lean, which is what I think it should be. Under load and at speed, the oscillations are nice and tight and uniform looking, high and low.     Fuel trims suggest the PCM is compensating pretty hard at idle to pull fuel out. But it's not enough to trip a CEL. Something about slowing to a stop: brake vaccum booster, EGR, or the EVAP purge is delayed, or there's pooled fuel in the intake again that's draining into a cylinder is enough to set the CEL. Of course, in two days of driving, it hasn't set. I was hoping to actually look at the freeze-frame data when it sets. IAT is high because it's idling on an 83 degree day here.
