I smell a troll. Only 5 posts, bashing the GM trucks and pumping up the Ford....

 

I guess you missed the part that I currently own a a GM truck (and that I plan to keep it)? And the part that I was interested in replacing it with a '14 Silverado, but for fuel savings alone it wouldn't be worth it? And the part where I am only INTERESTED (not PUMPING) up the Ford if and only if it gets anywhere near its lofty mpg goals?

 

My GM Duramax has been the BEST truck I have ever owned actually. Bashing? Troll? Hardly.

Ugh....they were "sort of" on the upswing the past few years, now I feel like its gone to their heads and the situation is far from improving. GMC > FORD

FWIW when I test drove the ecoboost I was able to get mileage in the low 20's when driven gently, similar to what the GM trucks produce. Under more normal driving conditions the Ford's mileage dropped to the 16-17 range compared to GM's 18-19 range. Granted a 10 mile test drive is not very scientific. There were bigger issues with the Ford's interior and overall quality that would have made me keep my 07 Tundra instead of getting a new F150. All being said, I traded the Tundra for the 14 Sierra.

 

I would definitely like the 360 camera from the 15 F150, but still prefer the center console and large storage area around the cupholders of the Sierra, plus all the power and usb ports. 15K reliable miles from the Sierra compared to an engine that blew the heads at 65K miles on my last Ford also gives me a strong bias to stay with GM. A better F150 will only make everyone else get better, so this is a good thing for all of us. So, yes, the new F150 is an improvement, but I'm keeping my 14 Sierra for now. BTW, I haven't seen anything about availability from Ford of a full crew with 6.5 foot bed, which is another of my favorite things about the 14 Sierra.

even though its Very Early, I bet to offset the cost of using aluminum, the MSRP is probably going to make a HUGE JUMP. (the Current F150 starts at $24,445; I bet that Number is probably going to inflate to about $30K for a BASE XL Model.)

As a owner of a 2013 Silverado 2500LTZ 6.0 as replacement to my 2011 F250 Lariat, I will say Ford does have it figured out when it comes to the Luxuries and some basic spoil the hell out of you features compared to chevy where my 2013 has the features like my 2004 Silverado LT. Chevy does have a much better ride and reliability and since we are talking trucks, I guess that's what matters and why I went back to chevy.

Guess we have different opinions on what a "better" ride & "reliability" is.

 

My '07 has Bilsteins all the way around, and a bone stock F-150 rides 100% better under all conditions. When I first bought the Silverado, I thought the same thing .. until I drove the F-150.

 

What I like the most about the FORD F-150 it is, the ball joints last longer than 38k miles, the brakes don't pulsate, the brakes are 10x stronger, and the interior is SILENT.

 

Oh, and the front differential doesn't start leaking at 45k miles.

The real world '14 Silverado 5.7L mpg numbers have dissappointed enough that I have decided to hold onto my current Dmax, maybe the new real world F-150 (if available with a small V8) mpg numbers will be enough to sway me. I'll have to wait until owner mpg numbers start coming in....

I hope you're not getting the fuel numbers from the same place that told you a 5.7 is offered. Many owners on here are getting good mileage. Only 1 V8 will be offered in the new fords. Honestly I think you would regret ditching the Dmax, no matter what you got in it's place.

Ford claims they use military grade aluminum on the new 2015 truck. What does that mean? The military has many difference grades of aluminum. So without naming what the specs are in the grade, I don't know what they are talking about.

Ford uses some dumb marketing hype. "Military grade aluminum" is slick-talk, but there is certainly a specific (and well known) alloy they've chosen.

 

I checked out a new Silverado recently, and pushed on the (aluminum alloy) hood. Definitely "weaker" than the steel hood on my current truck, and easily flexes. That doesn't make it 'bad', and it's no worse than the steel hood on our Toyota Sienna, but it's obvious that it's lighter/thinner. Pretty soon, trucks will resemble coke cans more-so than tankers.

Just wait until you need any body work on an aluminum panel - better make sure you've got the best (read: MOST EXPENSIVE) insurance money can buy, and it's up to date ....

 

Most body shops today aren't equipped to work with aluminum. Going to cost some BIG money ....
