My new truck excitement quickly wore off, apparently like the frame coating on my 2014 Sierra. Came off the lot sat, it's got 200 miles on it today, and this is what I found in 2 minutes of looking can't wait to see what's under there when I really look. I'll talk to the dealer tomorrow, and see what they say, I'll assume the'll says it's normal. The next question is how hard do I push? For TSB repair, or take back the truck.

I searched and didn't see this referenced. There is a new TSB concerning frame rust like I'm showing. I got this I from a friend that's a gm mechanic.

 

14002A: Service Update for Inventory and Customer Vehicles - Underbody Appearance - Expires with Base Warranty - (Feb 10, 2014)

 

This bulletin provides a service procedure to inspect and, if necessary, repair the appearance of underbody components on certain 2014 model year Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles that may not meet GM appearance requirements for new vehicles. These vehicles may exhibit signs of premature surface degradation on certain underbody components.

This service procedure should be completed as soon as possible on involved vehicles currently in dealer inventory and customer vehicles that return to the dealer for any type of service during the New Vehicle Limited Warranty coverage period

Vehicles Involved

All involved vehicles are identified by VIN in the Global Warranty Management System – Investigate Vehicle History Application. Dealership technicians should always check this site to confirm vehicle involvement prior to beginning any required inspections and/or repairs. It is important to routinely use this tool to verify eligibility because not all similar vehicles may be involved regardless of description or option content.

Additionally, a list of involved vehicles currently in dealer inventory is available on the “Service Update Bulletin Information” link under the “Service” tab in GM GlobalConnect. Customer vehicles that return for service, for any reason, and are still covered under the vehicle's base warranty should also be checked for vehicle eligibility.

Called the dealer yesterday about seeing rust on my frame and told him about the bulletin. He said he'd look into it and would call me back. An hour later he called and said he has just ordered the items needed to correct the problem and will call when it's in.. Seems like they going to spray some coating on the rust areas. Will update when the truck goes in..

Dealer called and said the items were "in" to do the rust bulletin and it goes in Tuesday for the repair. They say they'll have another truck there for me to drive when it goes in.. I'm a little nervous since they said my truck is the first one they've ever done, yikes!!!

 

I plan on taking a bunch of "before and after" pictures to see if they do a good job and to see if they scratch or dent the paint.

 

Anyone else have this rust bulletin done on theirs? How long does it really take?

I'm in the same boat with the rust on my frame I brought the truck into the dealership and they said they're going to use a product called kryptonite has anybody heard of this is this what they've been using? He told me it's very expensive and has a very short shelf life..

Got the truck back today and it looks great, the guy who did it said GM sent 2 separate products and both had to be applied.. They had the truck for just a day. Once the rain stops later I'll get under and post the before and after photos..

Sorry for the delay, been crazy busy prepping for an Algonquin canoe trip. Ok, here are a couple before and after photo's...

Glad to hear I'm not the only one having this problem - I'll be bringing mine in next week to have this done. Such a shame

This is just one of many spots on my new 2014, has 1000 miles on it. Not even been driven in the rain yet. Will the TSB that's been mentioned take care of this? Do I need to get it to a dealer or call GM?

    • Hey guys, sorry for the confusison about this. This wasn't my experainnce, it was copied and pasted fom the net. 
    • The problem with failure rates or increase failures are there’s people who don’t have a problem. What are you doing wrong they say. We had 4 5.7 GM diesel’s in the family when they came out. One was flawless. My uncle who happened to be the most abusive. Early rotary engines were known to use oil. I abused my first car so bad in six months I replaced the clutch, transmission and rear end. It didn’t use oil. My brother in law has a 2013 Tahoe and an older Yukon. The Yukon has 280K miles. The Tahoe around 175K. He runs them to about 300K. If his lifters fail before that time he would consider it a failure. My Hondas, I know people hate it when I mention them. Identical engines. One with cylinder deactivation one doesn’t have it. One shudders when the eco light goes on or off. Cylinder deactivation. But wait! According to the web. It can happen with lock up too. So now people in the know are changing the oil and transmission fluid more often. Then you read it could be a programing issue. So what do you do? There’s lots of money involved. I see three ways to deal with it. One only works if you don’t drive lots of miles. Lease, never get out of warranty. Or only buy older vehicles with a good track record. They all have bad runs. Usually when there’s a change. Even Toyota and Honda. 
    • Question @diyer2 on this line if you please. Are you saying the shudder is the system turning on and off at the frequency of the shudder? Guess I'm asking if you are saying you have seen it do this with the bi-direction scan tool in graph mode? If so have you been able to discern the 'trigger'. Something is telling to cycle rapidly.    My truck just started doing this recently. 197K on the clock. My response has been M5 anything under 55 mph. I treat it like a lugging stick shift. Gear down and let it spin a bit. Engauge M5, then tow mode and then M6 lets the trans stay in 5th but the AFM is active. Smooth like Skippy.    My thought was that as a machine ages the friction gets lower and as the system is load based, the lower friction would allow it to turn on at ever lower rpm until it reaches the lugging point. And yes I am ignorant of any minimum rpm requirement for the system. If you know that would be useful information.    As you know I run a Scan-Gauge II which allows me to watch the On/Off of the signal to the VLOM. While in the shudder mode I'm not seeing is cycle at that frequency or at all for that matter outside the triggers @newdude posted a few years back. Now is it possible that the refresh rate isn't fast enough to catch it? Maybe. It is why I asked my first question about graphing and trigging parameter.     As we have observed from members here the failure point is all over the map miles wise as you note yourself in your opening post. That by itself begs a few questions like fellows that comment on these lifters failing even after the system has been disabled.     • UPDATE 2: Steering wheel control backlights and control of the cluster can supposedly be achieved by adding a wire to pin 20 of the cluster and tapping it to pin 2 of the main clock spring harness. I'm going to give it a shot - will update  
    • GM Global A pickups 2019-2022 can do OTA programming for the radio.  GM VIP (GM Global B) can do OTAs for almost every module on board.  So a 2022.5 and newer pickup can do OTAs for recalls like the 2.7 fuel flow recall.  EVs get OTAs that improve one pedal driving, radio issues, HVAC issues, updated battery management software, etc.     So age of the vehicle/what GM electrical platform its on will alter what amount of updates can be pushed on OTAs.
