ATTENTION anyone with oil pressure issues

I'm new to the group but I just put an oil pump in my 01 Silverado. And my pressure goes up when you hit gas peddle. But cold or hot it will still fall if it idles. Is it something simple. Or is the 145000+ miles the end??? Any advice would be greatly appreciated and thank you.

You need to provide more detail on your specific issue.


Does it have good oil pressure on start up, like 40+ psi and then it just falls to zero or does it level off to a certain number?


Can you confirm the readings with a manual oil pressure gauge or is your oil pressure sensor new??

On the old Chevy/GMC's, you just removed the oilpan bolts and dropped the pan.

The pickup screen has nothing to do with this topic.  The oil pressure sender unit is in question here and, as others have written, located at the left rear of the motor practically up against the firewall.  Watch:

I replaced Oil Pressure Sensor on 06 Silverado 4.8L. Truck was reading about 40psi when starting-up but drops to about 30psi, but runs good. When I purchased the sensor it did not come with a filter, but some did. I YouTube some videos and some cleaned the filter and reused it. In some videos it showed how simple it was to reach the sensor without disassembling VLOM, so I chose this method. When I took out sensor I was trying to fish-out the filter with a pick, but could not feel the filter loosening nor could I see with an extendo mirror and light to see what was what. I was hoping to get a better oil pressure reading. So is this model Silverado have a fixed oil pressure filter or needing some other extractor tool. Need to know before I disassemble VLOM next Friday and get a better look. And I'll check oil pressure with a tester to reset oil gauge at the instrument panel which I should have done first...

I appreciate any insight.

I have 2011 Sierra, 5.3, 4x4, 140k miles, dealer oil changes with GM Dexos synthetic oil.  Noticed oil gauge reading 21-22 psi at 2000 rpms.  A few hours later got back in truck and the same thing, plus the check engine light came on.  Drove 50 miles to a dealer.  I don't know the codes but they said "oil sensor, oil pressure, maintenance".  They also said the oil sensor is where they start, at a price of $350.  Then they go on further if that doesn't solve the issue, including up to pistons and rings.

I had this issue.  Highway speed I noticed it at 21 psi.  Later the check engine light came on, dealer said it coded change oil pressure sensor.  I had an independent shop change it out.  He said the screen below it was clean.  So, after this was one I got 38-40psi on highway and about 30 idle.  I wasn't fully satisfied.  Some on this board said he had that issue once; changed oil & filter and has been driving it for years.  It didn't make sense to me but I did so.  This time instead of going to the dealer to do it I changed it myself.  Mobil-1 and a new filter for synthetic oil.  Highway pressure is now 40 or more.  But occasionally 39.  It idles at 30 (usually) but sometimes it idles at 21.  Why that would differ from 30 down to 21 I dont know (since the shop told me that screen under the sensor was clean as a whistle.

New poster, actually not my truck. 🙂 While my son-in-law is out of town, I was going to install a starter for him. Driving the truck to my house there was no oil pressure. After watching @carnau video, I have a question on removing the wire connector.

The truck is 2012 5.3 LTZ 1500 4wd.

First, understandably everyone in their videos can only describes how to pull the clip off. I understand there are two operations. 1. you have to move a clip before you can press and remove the wire connection from the sensor. The video says to squeeze and lift up. Is that the first part? The clip comes up before pulling the wire connection? Here is a zoomed in.

Is the white the clip? Or do I have to lift the blue and squeeze the white?

I am not visualizing it yet.






Since this is a 4wd, I have to climb into the engine bay and trying to get a mental picture since I am old and it is hard. 🙂

Got it done last night. I going to add a couple of thing for anyone else who comes across this thread.


Here is someone who pulled off the intake. You don't have to and he said that, the only reason he did was for videoing. This help me in seeing how to disconnect the connector without being able to see it. 🙂   I linked the video at the spot after he has removed the intake. 



Also, after getting it all installed, the gauged did not register at first. After double checking the connector and that not fixing it, I cleared the codes. The next time I started the gauge started working. Not sure if clearing code would have any effect, I just what I did. I almost wished I would have tried and cleared the code before swapping out the sensor. 



And last, I found this meme that cracked me up after fighting the sensor behind the intake. 🙂

2005 Silverado WT 4.8. Recently purchased and restoring.


209K, I am at 40 PSI after additive and changing the oil with high mileage conventional oil. It was  lower.


Appreciate the information, but just another "thing" i should look at.


40 PSI is in the middle of the gauge and what I was taught, middle is good.


I have read about 60 PSI?


Would anyone know what the correct oil pressure should be ?

      I have a 2017 Silverado 5.3L. Used to stay around 40 pounds of oil. Now when idling, is goes down to 20-25 ish pounds. It’s not throwing any codes up but does have a bit of a knock if I floor it without letting the pressure build back up first. Cold start it’s just below 40 pounds but at operating temps (210) it drops like crazy. It’s not oil quality or level, I just changed it last week and it was good for half a day and went back down.

      Hello, I'm new to this forum. I have a 2012 GMC Sierra with 150,000 miles. The 5.3 litre engine has had the oil changed every time the oil life has hit 30% , around 5 to 6 thousand miles. The oil pressure dropped and I replaced the oil pressure sending unit (opsu) and the problem was fixed for about a month. The old screen filter under the opsu was dirty but not severely clogged. After about a month the oil pressure dropped to 20 lbs and the check engine light came back on. I am considering pulling the opsu back out , @ operating temperature, and squirting brake cleaner or something down the oil passage followed by 2 hot oil changes.  My question is , 1: is this a good idea?, 2: where does that oil passage directly lead to?

      my 6.0 with 230xxx has low oil pressure but no knocks maybe a little tick though. When i bought the truck it had maybe 5-9psi cold dropping to 0 warm. Thought it may have been a pickup tube oring or oil pump so i went ahead and replaced the pickup tube, o ring, and pump. it now gets 20 cold 7 warm at idle and 0 warm at idle and 20 warm running 1700 rpm. Which is a lot better but still a problem. I am aware the bearings may be shot and need a total rebuild, that is not out of the options. It is not electrical or sensor based issue same psi with a mechanical gauge. However I need to replace my harmonic balancer and take off the timing cover again so i was looking at it and could it be as simple as a o camshaft retainer plate? it has a build in thin o ring which if fails will drain pressure as it connects the oil gallys. Am I correct in thinking that this could solve my issues? Any input is helpful, thanks.

      New to the forum here, and I have a 2005 chevy silverado 1500 with the 5.3L. I drive to and from michigan from chicago for college every couple of weeks. The last time I drove up to michigan 2 hours into my drive the oil pressure gauge started slowly moving down from 40psi. Every 10 minutes it seemed it moved down a notch until it got to 15psi and then I pulled over just to investigate because the truck was running perfectly normal and no warning lights or anything were on. I did a walk around, no leaks, no engine noise and the oil level was in the same place as when I left. Also when I stopped the pressure gauge dropped to 0 at idle and the truck idled normal. I continued to drive till i got to my destinations 30 minutes later. The next day when I started it back up the oil pressure is now reading normal and has read normal for the last week. I went to tech school and I know my way around an engine and i'm almost positive this isn't a mechanical issue, im thinking its the oil pressure sensor or sending unit or it could be the gauge itself because first gen silverados are famous for bad gauges but i feel if it was a bad sensor there would be warning lights? Not sure though, any of you guys experience an issue like this or have any idea of what to check or what it could be?? Much appreciated!!

      i need some help i got a 5.3 i rebuilt. dropped into my tahoe and no start. well first i figured out im not getting spark.so my plugs are brand new and my ignition coils are fairly new. but i cannott get any resistance to come up testing coils but they worked fine a few weeks before ,i did have a bad random misfire and some knock but i advanced my timeing plus 2.any ways i noticed no oil pressure at all while cranking, so now im building a pressure pump to prime it with.this is my first rebuild im new to all this i bought a pc some engine books and a shit load of tools and im hooked. well please someone give me a hand with this its ****in up my life and marriage.if any one has some ideas call me or txt 8104934779. i really need the help. thank you johnny deere
