That's gotta be the best way to go right there. I'm definitely doing it that way when I get mine

Yeah I thought that was the easiest way to go.  My truck already had the factory LED bed light kit that comes with 2 lights mounted near the rear of the bed and tied into the factory switch below the HVAC controls.  I wanted a little more bed light plus a little light in the step cavities to see them at night.  I just bought another factory bed light set off ebay and spliced them into the existing harnesses in the bed then bought 2 of these:

https://www.oznium.com/led-bolts-prewired-leds/led-bolt

and mounted them in the roof of the step cavity and spliced into the same wires (I wanted a softer glow so I wired some resistors inline before the bullet lights -- you can get them from Oznium too).  When I use the factory cargo light switch on the dash the cargo light, all 4 bed lights, and both step cavity lights come on with no problems.  And since they are tied into the factory wiring they will automatically shut off before the battery drains too low.

Actually it was pretty easy which is why I went that route.

Do you remember which wires are for the bed lights? And where did you splice into them at?

Mine came from the factory with the first set of bed lights already installed so the wires were already there.

If you buy the factory kit it comes with all the wiring you need and a plug that fits into a junction box just behind the spare tire.  Search these forums and you will find threads with part numbers and pictures.

Has anybody found a way to override the cargo light switch inside the cab so the bed/cargo lights dont go off when the truck is in drive?

I went with the smaller ones, simple bolt-on design and tapped into the reverse lights. Hardly noticeable and give off quite a bit of light, I'm happy with them. Got mine from the website, wish.com.

I installed 1 led light in each bumper step. I drilled a hole in the center of the step toward the top. Right behind your hitch are a bunch of wires and plugs. I connected both wires to one of the wires that works with the cargo lights and grounded out the others. I forgot which one it was but ill look tomorrow. It works perfect. Never had a problem. I added some pictures below.

Check out the tow mirror adaptation write up by Pgamboa (within this site) - 1st page he has a diode fix. All cargo lights stay on when in reverse

Semi related to this topic i added rough country rock lights with the angled mounts under the step and they are plenty bright when backing up, i spliced into the reverse light in the taillight and i love them can send pics to anyone interested

While this doesn't directly address adding extra lights to the back of the truck, this simple modification will cast quite a bit of light toward the back of the truck along the sides.

By adding a single wire to the BCM under the dash on the driver's side (at least in the 2016 and 2018 HD trucks) you can get the side mirror cargo lights to turn on whenever the truck is in reverse (when the truck is running) or the cargo light switch is turned on (when the truck is turned off).

You need to run a wire from pin connector 26 on the Brown BCM block to pin connector 25 on the Pink BCM block (see picture).

Following are some pictures of the amount of light put out with this mod.

Finally got a pic. Been so busy at work and having to travel, haven't had much time to do anything. 5cf52298c7b4df504afc37fb9d1b9105.jpg

    • That makes sense, and I think you are describing the real product problem. Capturing data is the easy part. If the owner or technician has to manually dig through five minutes of millisecond-level logs, the product has already failed. The device would be at the ECM harness, not at the OBD port, so I agree that data retrieval and event marking need to be thought through carefully. The way I am thinking about the architecture is: The recorder itself should not depend on a phone, app, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or cloud connection to capture the event. It should always keep a local rolling buffer and lock the event locally. A button, phone app, or small cabin device would only act as an event marker. If the driver feels a stumble and presses the button 10–30 seconds later, the pre-buffer has to already contain the useful data. For data retrieval, the practical options would be a sealed service USB lead, Wi-Fi download, or a phone/cabin companion device. I would not expect the owner to remove the ECM-side module or work with raw files directly. The cloud or AI side would be for interpretation, not for capturing the event. The truck may have no connection when the issue happens, so the evidence has to be saved locally first. After that, cloud processing could help decode the data, compare it against baselines, and generate a readable report. For the first version, I would keep the automatic triggers conservative and objective: driver event marker bus-off error passive voltage drop / brownout device reset FIFO or queue overflow a normally periodic message disappearing side-to-side communication mismatch, if the topology supports that For “learning normal,” I agree with your point, but I would not want to overclaim it as automatic root-cause diagnosis at first. A realistic first step would be learned baseline comparison for that specific vehicle and operating condition. For example, a value would only be compared against similar conditions: RPM range load / MAP throttle position gear / vehicle speed coolant and oil temperature battery voltage AFM/DFM state, if decoded and validated Then the report could flag things like: this periodic message disappeared compared with its normal timing this value deviated from this vehicle’s normal range under similar conditions the same abnormal pattern repeated after the same type of event the anomaly occurred together with voltage, oil-pressure, misfire, or communication changes But I would still call that “abnormal pattern detected,” not “replace this part,” unless there is enough validated repair data behind it. So the intended product would not be “here is a huge log.” It would need to be an event package: what triggered the capture how much pre/post data was preserved what changed before and after the event whether the device itself reset, overflowed, or saw a bus error selected graphs around the event raw data only as supporting evidence From your perspective, what would make this kind of report useful instead of just another datalog? For example: What are the top 5 parameters or events you would want highlighted first? Would you trust a learned baseline for that specific vehicle, or would you prefer fixed thresholds? How much false-positive flagging would be acceptable before you stopped looking at the reports? What would a one-page report need to show for an independent shop to take it seriously? For misfire, AFM/DFM, oil pressure, or U-code complaints, what would you want the tool to flag automatically?
