Your best bet to get an idea of what it's worth is to research those trailers (or very similar ones) -in your area-. Use Craigslist as a starting point and maybe look on some dealer web sites for used inventory. The price of a trailer varies widely from one area of the country to another because transportation costs are wildly variable.

Once you have a sense for what's out there on the market and know what sort of condition you get for those prices, compare that to this trailer. Be fair with what you offer, but don't feel like you have to offer full market value. If he's not actively trying to sell it and wants you to make an offer, he's looking for "an easy way" to get rid of it.

If it were me, I'd offer about 20% less than market value. If he balks, I'd tell him that I'd be happy to hold off a few weeks if he would rather try and sell it on the open market, and my offer would still stand if he couldn't sell it.

How are brakes and tires? Electric wiring? Trailers may "look" great but sit more than used. If not properly taken care of the mentioned systems degrade.

Thanks for the responses guys! Here's a photo of the trailer. Tires are in decent shape. He hasn't used very often in the last 2 years so I would make sure to check the wiring hooked to the truck before making the offer.

I am gunna guess brakes are shot and wheel bearing. Wiring a crapshoot. Rodents love the insulation on wires. Give it a big look and if zero issues then make an offer. Compare this to eBay, local Craigslist, etc.

I would say it dosent look beat but doesn't look great either.

Agreed. It doesn't look abused, but it DOES look unmaintained. If this were my neighbor, and I had a good relationship with him, I'd approach it as "Are you just looking to get it off of your property? I wasn't necessarily looking to buy something, at least not now. But, if the price were right, I might be convinced."

That way, you don't potentially tear down a good relationship if he feels insulted by what he perceives as a low-ball offer or you being very critical of the condition.

$1500-2500 but its going to be a pig to tow. I looked at 7x14 and the steel ones weighed in at 2,800 lbs. I opted for new aluminum at only 1,680 lbs. Tires should be replaced, going on 20 yrs old and may be dry rotted and blow out at highway speeds.

It is potentially a good find for you if you have the space and a use for this size of trailer. It is too large (imo) to be "handy" and not big enough to haul cars. It would make a great auxiliary work or storage shed if you are not hauling heavy loads!

-trailer breaks

I wouldn't give him a penny for it if it always breaks ....

J/K. As others have said it looks like he didn't beat it but also didn't take great care of it. I would plan on new brakes and wiring (probably around $300), new wheel bearings (another $100) and maybe some other parts that you will find that need to be replaced. And it's definitely going to be heavy to pull. Hopefully you have a 2500 (a 1500 will pull it but will struggle if you have it very full).

Whatever happens good luck!

after some thinking, i decided best to let it go. going to look for a lighter trailer that is a little smaller. i just dont need one that size (i will primarily be using for duck hunting) and if im going to buy a trailer, i dont feel like replacing a bunch of parts before its even road safe.

thanks everyone for the help! yall most likely saved me a bunch of work! the search continues
