I went from the Tundra to GM so I could write a book about Tundra issues but sorry to say I did not post on the Tundra Forum. For the most part my Tundra was reliable and resale wasn't bad. Handling and towing way below average and fuel economy towing is a joke. I towed a travel trailer to Alaska and back and had a miserable trip. Carried 12 gallons extra gas and had to use it more than once. The fuel mapping is way off because the truck wants to run high R's (no useable torque) and 6-8 mpg often the result. Even using the select shifting is was almost impossible to drive at peak torque of about 3600, don't hold me to that # it's been a few years might have been 3400. And hills or God forbid having to slow down for traffic and then...try to recover, forget it. When I returned I provided my dealer with a scathing critique and lots of detail including pictures. Toyota flew 2 guys in and spent 2 days with my truck only to report "working as designed". And the 16's are still basically the same setup.

I had purchased a trailer with aluminum frame and weight of 4150 dry, never over 5500 during the trip. I also towed a snowmobile trailer that was about 4,000 and other trailers that were lighter. My quick summary conclusion is that Toyota still doesn't understand truck engines. Engine and transmission mapping are bad but the basic engine power band is more "carlike". Great drag racing but that's about it.

Bingo... they have no torque.. and they aren't impressive empty either. Mine loaded with maybe 800 lbs of gear and stock size 10 ply tires is an utter dog.... 10 plies made a huge difference over the stock p rated Michelins.. first truck I noticed that especially staying with the exact stock size. My employees 2014 5.3 Silverado ( also with 10 plies and probably more weight in the back) doesn't feel any different to drive to me than the Tundra... so where all this complaining about power comes from is beyond me. I drive a 15 6.2 and it skull drags a Tundra no contest... Oddly the only truck I have driven beyond my old 05 Sierra that has a driveline vibration about 75 mph is the Tundra... I should take it in and bitch but I honestly don't care. Toyota's service here is a joke so it's not worth the effort either... I can't bothered with a service writer and department full of guys that can't speak English. Next dealership is a 2.5 hour drive... for more non English speaking goombas lol.

 

If I could find vibrating K2XX I would like to see what it's like. We test drove a bunch of low mile trades finding that 14 for my one guy to run and not one of them vibrated... so that couldn't have been the reason they were dumped.

 

Neither of my F150s vibrated... nor did my Titan or my Ram. The Titan had some serious problems and wallowed like a boat in the ocean and would take off on you on the highway.. But it was just one lemon amongst a bunch of trouble free trucks... what I get for a clean low mile certified pre owned used lol

I didn't say I had trouble stopping....I had trailer brakes and a controller. You must have read that into my comment about "slowing for traffic and trying to recover". Issue is-lose momentum and try to get back up to cruising speed.

And I didn't mean to infer that everything else was rosy. There were three or four recalls and several issues that Toyota wouldn't fix. Terrible infotainment system and Nav not as good as GM by a bunch! Strange very hard downshift and clunk infrequently. Handling not as good as GM, etc. etc. Drivetrain reliability was OK and nothing broke while I owned it. I would say the same about my 14 & 16 GM trucks and frankly don't think Toyota is even close. But if a vibrator is your only criteria the Toyota may be the best truck. But then if you don't tow-buy a midsize and save some money. The Ridgeline might be worth a try. All of the trucks seem to have some issues, although GM may lead in %. But this is getting off topic.

My 2016 had a suspension related vibration at high speed that GM/Dealer wouldn't fix. I was lucky and after trying rear spring clamps figured out that the issue was U bolt related. I spent $40 and fixed mine with 9/16" (larger diameter/more torque) replacement U bolts. This also got rid of some driveline slop and now the shocks work like they should.

Sorry, guess I did read into that. Can I ask what year the truck was? was it an '07? They seem ti be the worst year that Toyota had, and gasp say it ain't so, they had a vibration issue in '07. I have absolutely no desire for a mid-size truck, so as of right now, Tundra is in my opinion the best truck. And GM does have the highest percentage of issues, its not even close... but thats another topic for another day

No the Tundra is a 2015.... mind you beyond sheet metal it's an 07 anyway lol.

yes, they didnt change the underlying design, but they may have altered the way they manufacture them. The only year that I can find vibration as a real problem is in 2007. I have found the odd 1 here or there since 07, but no threads dedicated to it like that year. Sharp truck though, I like it

I'd consider it, but you're too far away.... and I want Black, although that Blue is a pretty good looking color on that truck.

I still think the best truck for you is a Ford Jesse, you like all the bells and whistles and Ford has them, lots of them.

hey guys, sort of the new guy here. I am not inclined to read all of the 600 plus pages in this thread but I have read several pages and was wondering if anyone can please give me the Cliffs Notes on the suspension vibration issue?

 

My new 16 Crew Cab 4X4 Z71 has under 500 miles on it and most of it has been at 75 mph on highway and it's a smooth driving truck. I am not feeling anything like what some of you are describing.

To be honest, if you think your truck is smooth, you don't want to know about it. You'll start looking for it and drive yourself insane with it

Are you a member of many Tundra forums ? I am and I don't see much complaining at all. The vast majority of threads are about having fun with their trucks.

I agree the Tundra is a great truck

I'm very very happy with my Ram though with 10000 miles and not one issue or even a rattle . My shake-a Rado started rattling with about 600 miles I'm guessing because of the vibrations and shaking .

I must admit the Chevy is still the sexiest and best looking truck on the market to date but that's were it stops . I don't care how good it looks that truck gave me daily headaches.

Hello, I am new here and I just purchased a 2016 Silverado 1500 Z71 LT. My wife and I were riding to Walmart today on a slight incline on the highway and she asked me what is that vibration or studder? I have felt it before but thought it was just the road. It almost feels like the transmission and the torque converter not locking up all the way in my opinion. I have to take mine in tomorrow for some factory paint defects to get repaired so I will talk to a tech and see if there is any idea. I like this forum and look forward to being active here. My truck has less than 400 miles on it right now.

The 14s & 15s had issues with torque converters doing exactly what your describing. I thought I read they came out with a redesigned torque converter to fix the issue. Sad to hear the 16s have it too.

Update is that I have filed a Lemon Law complaint with BBB and got a call from GM, after initially talking to GM customer service and being told more repair attempts before anything more can be done. Since lemon law here is 3 visits for same problem with an in writing notice for a final repair and the truck was bought on a Friday and then spent Sat, Mon and Tues in the shop. I let them know that if they will offer a buy back, I would be happy to purchase another GM product. If they follow through to the lemon law route, there will be no GM product in my future and that my wife's 2014 Acadia, when the time comes will not be replaced with a GM product nor will I purchase or recommend a GM product. It is the customer service and response to the problem that came with my brand new truck that will determine if I remain a loyal GM customer, or take my business elsewhere.

 

GM is reviewing my case this week. We will see where it goes from here.

Sadly, customer care is lacking with any truck manufacturer. The others don't give a crap about you just as much as GM doesn't.

    • He is not saying that an SAE *W20 will have more viscosity than a *W40 due to MORE VII polymers. He is saying that although multiple *W40 may post in the PDS the same or similar 100 C and 150 C viscosities that the blenders choice of modifier TYPE and AMOUNT to get his chosen base to grade will not give identical real world viscosities in shear and at temperature. All will pass the SII test but not all will pass the 100 C HTHS (unpublished value) testing the blender does and relies on to get the required by law "percentage improvement' referenced to his last great work.    Tis the problem with the lie. Once told others are required to support it. 
    • I have a `25, 1500 that auto sets on incline. Never knew that at first. I have the electronic shifter. Just think if it didn`t do that? Unlike a mechanical shift that you can muscle out of park, how would you get this thing out? That would be a problem.   What I found out later is, I don`t have to push the button to release. Just put it in gear.   Setting parameters? Don`t know if it`s possible.

I usually set the parking brake (habit) when on flat ground for typical driving.    When backed down on the launch ramp to launch the boat and I place gear selector into Park, the parking brake activates automatically. My second nature is to set parking brake manually and noticed I was turing the parking brake off.  The parking brake appears to be setting itself automatically.   I looked all over my owner's manual and only found references to being on an incline and manually setting parking brake, or at times parking brake will be auto engaged, but nothing specific to my situation.    When is the parking brake automatically engaged?  Under what specific circumstances?  Can the auto set parameters be changed?     I like the auto set feature.  It would be nice if always engaged when shifted into Park and released when shifted out of Park (like my wifes 2025 RAV4).   Thanks!

Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
    • Can it still be Assembled II?   Viscosity on the decline by various means. Heat on the rise making that worse. Engine RPM in the tank. Smaller motors with more boost trying to emulate an electric motor. Full torque, zero rpm. Then we will triple the OCI. Argh.    But wait....there is more. LSPI has pushed a shift from Ca to Mg and as that cost more PLUS the run to lower sulfur compounds the TBN is moving in the wrong direction for the increased OCI's demanded.    That not being enough to placate a demand for a parameter they can't measure the other sulfur bearing compounds are also under attack. That would be zinc and phosphorus sulfonate compounds. To some degree those are being replaced with boron esters and others, i.e. titanium ect. All of which have shorter service lives. And there there is the "Secrete Sauce" marketing for AW adds that 'Can't be detected by UOA's" but trust me because I (the blenders) never ever lie.    Spoiler alert; ALL additives are sacrificial! Smaller amounts of the old blended with less robust versions of the new do not equal longer service lives. So what are the blenders recommending? Wait for it.......   MOVING THE GOAL POSTS! OMG      Let's declare the long standing TAN/TBN crossover irrelevant and tell people that soot is a great 'graphite' based lubricant which can aid tribo films. Wait, what? Let's declare that the standards used for oxidation and nitration were to conservative and can be expanded. Let's tell them that because GDI fuel dilution, although being a VISCOSITY KILLER and an acid generator is actually okay because we have better base oils that limit viscosity failure limits. (Said knowing this is measured in fractions of a centipoise and in bases not commonly used in shelf oils)   Lying from the heart is not just the new normal but we have a public, a very young public, that is so ignorant of the facts and so sure of their "RESEARCH" into AI driven models base in regurgitated  instead of scientific research based unvarnished, peer reviewed FACTS that the incoming guard is loosing their grip on reality and the OEM's are tickled pink while the blends bend the knee.    You have an ever limited set of tools to work with. And sooner or later those will be taken from you as the API and the EPA strangle the last remaining fluids from the system. What you have left is your wits. If you care to use them.    At some point in the very near future it will not longer be possible to do "What is best for the machine", and be replaced with "The best you have access too". You WILL be rewarded with half the life and twice the cost. That isn't that hard to predict.
