2014 Silverado...Key Won't Go Into Ignition

Have a 2014 Silverado 1500 LTZ Dbl Cab........noticed the key was a bit difficult to slide all the way into the ignition cylinder, but if I wobbled it a bit it would eventually go in all the way. Truck has just over 1200 miles and it failed completely last week. Several different people tried unsuccessfully to insert the key to no avail. A call to ONSTAR and a tow to the dealer later revealed a breakdown in the ignition lock cylinder. The dealer does not have one in stock and it had to be ordered from Detroit so I have been without my truck for almost 5 days. Either these new center cut keys or the change in the cylinder itself needs to fixed. Dealer said they have had one other truck with a similar problem.

My rental was an Impala from Hertz with 1/8 tank of gas. I was told to make sure I brought it back with 1/8 tank or more or I would be charged an additional fee.. My credit card was charged $50 but I was told I would get it back if I returned the car as it was given to me. Funny, my other car is a Lexus and the dealer gives me a loaner with no caveats or restrictions.

Does this mean that they no longer rebuild or re-key ignition switches? Used to do that when a customer had a defective lock cylinder. I would remove the old cylinder out take the original pins and drivers, making sure I knew the correct location of the pins and drivers. You then take the new cylinder, and remove its pins and drivers, and replace them with the old ones. The pins and drivers, would be put into the complete assortment of matched pins and drivers of assorted lengths. We would do this simply due to the customer already has keys that fit, and you don't need rekey all other locks if you used new one with supplied key. If you did not rekey all other locks, customer now has two different keys, one for the new one, and the original key.

Center cut keys are a bit different than the older model keys which use the different length pins similar to your house key. Not only does the ingnition key need to match the new cylinder, the tail gate lock needs to as well.

The Lexus dealer probably owned the loaner you had. They just send the errand boy out to get gas in that. The Hertz was a rental and not owned by the dealer. You had to refill the gas just like any other rental car company and yes they rape your wallet when they have to fill it back up.

Back in 98, my new GTP had a large water leak in the seam between the side panel and roof. They gave me a truck as a loaner. Since it was summer, I used the bike for the three days they had the car. The rental got 12 kilometers put on it, 6 going home. 6 going back to dealer. When I picked the rental up, it was parked pointing uphill. A fairly steep hill at that. When I dropped the truck off, I backed it into the same spot. Rental guy was gone for the day, but service guy said no worry, he would do the scratch walk with me and records stuff. Nothing was wrong it, and service guy commented on the 12 kilometers in three days.

I got my AMEX bill at end of month,. Enterprise charged me $24.95 for fuel(this was back in 98). I went to the service guy to get him to go with me to the enterprise knob, but he appeared to be afraid to. Enterprise stood by their fees, even after we went out and turned the truck around and saw it now had more fuel than it did when I picked it up. Enterprise still stuck with their crap.

Worked out for me anyways, dealer refunded the money Enterprise charged, the owner of the dealership refused to renew Enterprise lease for their office. phone and parking lot 3 months later. I also got a free tank of fuel from the dealership. That 98 GTP was my second car from them, I have accounted for 22 new car sales since then between myself, family and friends. 7 of those were mine. This truck is the longest time I have gone without a new vehicle, first time sine 86 my vehicle has been out of bumper to bumper warranty as well.

Can't locate any info on centre cut keys. Tailgate is actually very easy, they come set up to auto match to your key. You put your key in, and turn almost all the way around, then back to starting point. That's it, key now works on tailgate. If you get lociking handle from GMAccessories, it comes that way. You can also get hitch pin locks that work on your truck ignition. Would not surprise me that replace door locks come that way as well. Maybe even igniti0on does as well.

Nice to know about the hitch pin key, I may have to look into that.

New cylinder installed by dealer after getting it from Detroit. No change in keys was made. Evidently cylinder was matched to my keys. Seems to work just fine as far as the key issue goes. However, I am now experiencing issues with the radio/NAV, & dash lights staying on after the key has been removed. I have re-inserted the key, turned it to on, then back off to inhibit the chime. Twice when unloading items from the bed I heard a noise from the cab. Investigation revealed the radio had come on all by itself. The chime had not sounded when I had exited the vehicle. I unlocked the cab, inserted my key, and recycled it ON/OFF to stop the radio. My truck may be haunted.

Six months ago I traded my 2004 Tundra for a brand new 2014 Silverado 1500 LT Double Cab. Same thing happened to mine. Key was finicky. Would push it in and out and it would work. It finally totally locked up on 4/2 with only 2500 miles on it. GM roadside sent a flat bed so they could drag my truck while in park from my driveway onto a flatbed. The parts to replace the ignition and recut new keys are on backorder, so they can't tell me when they can have it fixed.

I picked up my loaner vehicle today, which is a 2011 Chevy Impala with 45,000 miles on it. What a piece of crap that car is to drive. Even though it still looks like new, if the tag on the key didn't say it was a 2011, I would honestly think this car was made in the early 90's. I say this because the cars I had in the 90's handled better and had nicer interiors than this car does. They were German cars, so I guess that's to be expected.

Since owning the new Silverado, I had to drive back to the dealer for the passenger seat service bulletin. Then again for two other computer service bulletins. This is the first time I've ever posted a complaint online, but felt the need to since I have spent more time at the Chevy dealership since I bought this truck than I did in the Toyota dealership in the 10 years I had that truck. I decided to take a chance and buy a GM because I really liked the look of the new Silverado and I really regret my poor decision.

Looking forward to getting my truck back so I can go trade it in for a reliable brand. Having to pay sales tax, dealer fees, and excise tax again along with the depreciation loss is an expensive lesson learned.

We'll come back when they get their act together. Until then, I resign my 4 decade dedication to GM. If they don't feel the need to earn it back, then the hell with 'em. I'll spend my money with a company that WANTS customers.

If I need a reliable replacement, I'll build it myself. Kicking myself for not doing that in '07 ...

Truck has less than 250 miles on it and now the key won't go all the way into the ignition to allow the truck to start. I noticed this two days ago but I could shake/wiggle/jiggle the key and it would go all the way in and start the truck. Today, I drove the truck...parked it in the garage...now neither set of keys will go all the way into the ignition. I tried the shake/wiggle/jiggle...doesn't work.

Anyone else have these issues or have suggestions?

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike,

    • Because single shot injectors are ancient and multi hole injectors provide smoother running engines and sharper throttle response due to the fuel being atomized better..the best lead I have is a 24lb blue top injector almost everything matches up but the injector will put out about 26lb/hr which is just outside the gm threshold.figured id ask here to see if there was an absolute answer
    • Why is my question?   Any change in injectors requires a tune. Unless you are going back with the OEM part number or a newer part number of that same injector.   Any size difference or type difference like the EV6 style injectors all have different injector data for them. And there is no EV6 injector that matches the factory 25 lb/hr size that your truck comes with. I've been messing with these trucks and tuning them for a long time and what you trying to do doesn't exactly make sense to me.
    • My 6.6 gas lt8 had lifter noise with 28000 miles bought new 2026 and while driven to dealer it threw #1 rod bearing “HD my ass” good luck with yours i hope it don’t turn a rod bearing!
    • When a condition becomes a business model.    https://www.gm-trucks.com/gm-truck-suv-incentives-pricing-2026/   Zane posted this in "Latest Articles".    The honest bottom line   Truck buyers have spent three years assuming this is a temporary condition that will break once inventories normalize. GM just presented it to investors as a durable strategy, on a chart, as evidence of good management.   Inventory did normalize. GM is at 511,000 units and squarely inside its own 50 to 60 day target. The discounts still did not come back, because the low incentive number is the goal rather than a symptom of shortage.   Plan your purchase around that reality instead of waiting for it to change. Follow our ongoing GM News coverage for pricing and incentive changes as the next-generation trucks land.
    • Thought it was raining this morning when we woke. Nope. Dew point was over 80 F and humidity 98%. Zero visibility distance. Everything was 'sweating'. I've seen rain come out of clouds but never out of Pepper or the tree trunks.    Wicked storms just missed us sliding off to the east but by blocks. Heat index about 110 F with air temp in the 90's.    This is  our third wave this month of multiple days of this type of weather. And yet the grass is going dormant and the ground is cracking this side of the street and water up the the hood opposite. Just weird stuff going on.
