Do you really believe that Chevrolet is not aware of the issue? BS. They are just trying to cover it up, in absence of any workable solution at this time.

pm26 - I did not choose the best words - GM is probably aware and is stonewalling/covering up as you imply.

 

hvill - I have the double cab, 18 in wheels, Goodyear wrangler tires,s 5.3 liter engine. A distinct and noticeable vibration is felt most strongly on driver's side at speeds between 65 and 75 mph. Primarily when applying power, but can also be felt when coating after cresting a hill, for example. Tires have been balanced and force balanced; one wheel was out of round and replaced. I have no idea of the quality of the balancing efforts. Very noticeable and annoying vibration. For what these things cost, the ride should be smooth. My 2004 Silverado crew cab was smooth. I should have kept it.

Seem like to me we are having the same problem like I said earlier they switched me to continental tires ( and raod forced balanced) and did not have any luck. The vibration is annoying when you drive your truck on a trip an like you said for the price we paid it should have a smooth ride.

Anybody tried to have their wheels balanced on the truck? Years ago they had small portable balancers that would spin up the wheels directly on the vehicle and balance them this way. This type of balancing took care of any problems with unbalanced brake rotors and brake drums. I wonder if any tire shops still have these balancers. If I was having persistent vibration issues, I would give this technique a try if someone still has one of those machines. Also keep in mind that brake rotors and drums need to be balanced properly too for a vibration free ride. Good quality rotors are typically balanced by machining some metal from the heavy part of the rotor. Brake drums typically will have a weight spot welded on them. Check to make sure that you have your brake rotors and drums balanced. Some cheap Chinese brake rotors sold at discount auto parts stores are not even balanced. I hope that GM does not use anything like that on their trucks. Balancing wheels while mounted on your truck takes care of any imbalance problems in the brake rotors and drums. The downside is that you cannot rotate the wheels or reposition them without disturbing the balance.

 

Years ago they also used thread truing machines that would shave the tire into a perfect round shape. They were really effective with bias ply tires of the 60s and 70s. I have not seen one of those machines in years.

My tire shop in San Antonio does this. Smooth as glass ride. I even have them true my Michelins as soon as I get them on the truck. They use a strobe light now to balance the tire while spinning on the truck. they also true a tire, what you call shaving. There are still shops that do this but one must ask around. also used on trucks too so check some truck repair shops. After discount installs my tires and road force balance, I go to this shop and the balance is much better.

Could you inform us what GM is doing about this . Is there a fix ? Does GM know its a problem? I think we are all waiting for some answers from GM to let us know what is going on....

I found this forum while researching a bad and I mean bad vibration while towing my atv trailer with two quads on it. (see prior post) That was the only time I had an issue. I took the truck to the dealer, they updated two computer issues and now I get the vibration that most of you are describing all the time. So it is obvious that that computer update has something to do with most of your problems. FYI I bought one of the first trucks in the area hence an old computer program. There are many problems with can produce a vibration. All of us here have spent a lot of time dealing with this. I had planned on purchasing the truck after the lease was up because it would only have about 20,000 miles on it. Now I am unsure of this plan because of any unknown damage this vibration could cause over time (fatigue). So where does this leave me. I have owned 9 Chevy trucks so far and nothing else. If I am not compensated for this that will definitely change. This is sad because I have a couple family members who work for GM.

 

To the GM people who read this forum. It is time to let us know what is going on and stop leaving your loyal customers who have spent hard earned money on your trucks in the dark. It is one thing to have a problem, its understandable, it's a new production. It's another to not communicate with your customers and dealers. I say dealers because its pretty obvious they don't know either. Your going to loose loyal customers if you don't communicate soon if you haven't already.

P.S. At least give us another silverado when ours are being serviced for this issue it's what we paid for.

Ive been following this thread since I purchased my 2014 Tx Edition is October. I privately messaged GM about it months ago and the response was to take it to the dealership. Im not doing a damn thing until GM gives us something. No way I am going to leave my truck at a dealership for days on end without any known fix to this common problem.

Here is what I got. 65-80mph vibration. Its bad! Thing is, some roads it terrible, and some hardly noticeable. It can be a smooth interstate and its vibrating like hell and on a more distressed road it may not be at all. Good thing is, is that on the freeway right where the dealership is, is one of the worst spots where it acts up all the time. Like others, I have owned many (13) gm trucks ( check it out for yourself GM! ) and I also understand problems and am very understanding and tolerant of that. I am not tolerant of treating loyal customers like shit. I will not answer to a stock "please provide your vin # and mileage etc...". It is a slap in the face at this point.

Give me something to work with, now! Just as GMAC demands all payments on time, the same expectations must be reciprocated. What is going on with our trucks??

I have been through 3 sets of tires, currently with Nittos and have already had the RF balanced etc....

Still ****ed up. Im out over 2k in bullshit since my purchase trying to fix this bc I have NOTHING to go off of. You are out a customer GM.

 

To everyone out there:

 

If you want to be heard, write reviews on KBB, Edmunds, etc.... about the obvious problem and more so, the big **** all of you by GM for the way they have handled this- by ignoring it.

 

I was not going to ever get involved in this thread ( which I told GM in the personal message ) and wait for the recall. But bc of this appalling lack of respect for valued customers who are driving brand new, DEFECTIVE trucks- I will now get involved.

I have a question for everybody experiencing the Vibration/Shake, is your truck a Short Box (one piece driveshaft) or a Standard Box (twopiece drive shaft)?

Wow...I have a standard bed (two piece drive shaft) and have had nothing but issues with the vibration. So far they have replaced Wheels, tires, driveshaft, changed pinion angle, and changed spacer on driveshaft...been in the dealership now for over 5 weeks. I paid 50K for a piece of SHIT truck and now GM wants to trade me out for something else. I was told the issues were in the Standard Bed (two piece drive shaft) so now I hear that its a short box it makes me skeptikal. Not sure what to do....

Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
    • Can it still be Assembled II?   Viscosity on the decline by various means. Heat on the rise making that worse. Engine RPM in the tank. Smaller motors with more boost trying to emulate an electric motor. Full torque, zero rpm. Then we will triple the OCI. Argh.    But wait....there is more. LSPI has pushed a shift from Ca to Mg and as that cost more PLUS the run to lower sulfur compounds the TBN is moving in the wrong direction for the increased OCI's demanded.    That not being enough to placate a demand for a parameter they can't measure the other sulfur bearing compounds are also under attack. That would be zinc and phosphorus sulfonate compounds. To some degree those are being replaced with boron esters and others, i.e. titanium ect. All of which have shorter service lives. And there there is the "Secrete Sauce" marketing for AW adds that 'Can't be detected by UOA's" but trust me because I (the blenders) never ever lie.    Spoiler alert; ALL additives are sacrificial! Smaller amounts of the old blended with less robust versions of the new do not equal longer service lives. So what are the blenders recommending? Wait for it.......   MOVING THE GOAL POSTS! OMG      Let's declare the long standing TAN/TBN crossover irrelevant and tell people that soot is a great 'graphite' based lubricant which can aid tribo films. Wait, what? Let's declare that the standards used for oxidation and nitration were to conservative and can be expanded. Let's tell them that because GDI fuel dilution, although being a VISCOSITY KILLER and an acid generator is actually okay because we have better base oils that limit viscosity failure limits. (Said knowing this is measured in fractions of a centipoise and in bases not commonly used in shelf oils)   Lying from the heart is not just the new normal but we have a public, a very young public, that is so ignorant of the facts and so sure of their "RESEARCH" into AI driven models base in regurgitated  instead of scientific research based unvarnished, peer reviewed FACTS that the incoming guard is loosing their grip on reality and the OEM's are tickled pink while the blends bend the knee.    You have an ever limited set of tools to work with. And sooner or later those will be taken from you as the API and the EPA strangle the last remaining fluids from the system. What you have left is your wits. If you care to use them.    At some point in the very near future it will not longer be possible to do "What is best for the machine", and be replaced with "The best you have access too". You WILL be rewarded with half the life and twice the cost. That isn't that hard to predict.         
    • I trust you saw the other comment where he knew what he was talking about !. Yes, these darned newer vehicles with all their so smart they are stupid technology, goes and drains the battery down. As you might see my other comment, I installed a Noco 5 battery tender under the hood and at this point still have the cord routed so I have to lift the hood and then plug it in but am typically parked in a garage or a shed so its not risking the engine hood in the wind. That way I am assured or hopefully so of not finding I have a battery drawn down and can't even start the truck and that also damages the battery to draw it down too far. 
    • I guess no surprise my guesses were wrong !, at least now I know if I ever happen to see it grayed out in my own truck as to what is going on.    I never happened to catch my truck with it grayed out, it seemed every time I would test to see if there was an update it never found anything and yet more than once I would check to see if there was an update and there was nothing, then a day later or even that same morning I would drive to town and after more than one engine shut down in town as I did my errands it would pop up that there is an update now ready to install and the only place I have a connection to the internet is at home by wifi so its not as if it grabbed the download while driving. I don't trust these new vehicles due to all the crap they can decide to do while sitting for some days not running and run the battery down so most of the time if I know the truck will sit for a few days I plug in the battery tender I have mounted under the hood and so the only time the truck must have downloaded software was when it was sitting in the garage where the signal is awful but I have that tender plugged in and somehow it managed to download it. I honestly detest all this crap, way to easy to leave a person stranded.    Since I don't trust any of it I don't do the install of the already downloaded software until I get home and sometimes have even sat in the truck to watch what its doing as its going through the process to its conclusion as its not like it is set up that it will tell you the next time you fire up the engine that the update that was initialed actually installed or installed properly. Yes I can go into the updates and see the list. After I go through the install where I feel its safe to do so in case it breaks down as a result, I will plug in the battery tender after the fact to recharge as I don't know how much power its taking just to do the install and that can take a while for it to install. 
    • Thanks for the reply. All settings were correct and the engine was off, as it was supposed to be. It turned out to be something simple. I took a drive for about an hour. I must have had a low battery without knowing it. The voltage gauge on the display looked ok. At the end of my drive, I shut off the engine and the update prompt came up and it updated normally. It’s ironic because one of the features of the update is a reduction of battery drain.
