You should of heard some of the BS the tech was first saying.

 

"I couldn't feel the vibration. I'm betting it's the nature of the beast. These trucks are so sensitive to the road, you feel everything. "

 

That last one had me good. My camaro feels everything in the road, not the truck. Of course another hilarious thing is the whole time he is explaining to me why the vibration isn't in the driveline (only feel it in steering wheel, no other vibration, blah blah blah) - we get back to the lot and he says "I'm thinking driveshaft." I had to hold back a laugh, your telling me you spent ten minutes defending why it's not in the driveline to turn around and tell me you think it is?

 

I'll drive the damn thing through the showroom floor if I don't like the outcome of this!

See if you can go back and look at my entry. I had vibration on the hands and they fixed it. I have a list of what they did down to the parts it took. Tires and vibration dampeners. Road force balance is important. GM will not help. The dealer at this point is the only friend you have. If they do not help, go to a different one.

Well I'm happy to report that I think it was my tires. I picked up my truck this evening and the rep told me they had to road force balance my tires and found one that needed adjusting. On the ride home I noticed a major improvement. And this is after I adjusted the psi a couple weeks ago and that helped then which initially had me thinking it was the tires. So I'm definitely going to a specialist next week to get a proper alignment done. Other than that I'll just keep the tires balanced and rotated and run these for a while to save some money until I can put Michelins on.

 

They were unable to fix my shifting driver seat so I'll probably go to another dealer on that. And the MyLink display is flickering again after over 2 months of working fine and thinking they had fixed it. This truck.....one day at a time. It's a love-hate relationship.

I'm not a fan of tire rotations but if you do it I suggest front to back rotations, criss-crossing just invites trouble.

I have to respectfully disagree man. You absolutely should rotate your tires if you want long tire life and even tire wear. I've always followed the rotating scheme in the manual which is rear tires move to the front but stay on the same side of the vehicle, and the front tires switch sides AND move to the back. I've been doing that since my first truck (Dodge Dakota) back in 2004 and have always had nice even tire wear and long tire life on that truck and my 2007 Silverado that the 2014 replaced.

 

In the case of my 2014 Silverado, I think it definitely needs an alignment because I'm starting to notice a slight uneven tire wear on the front tires. But the proper PSI and balancing has helped. An alignment will make sure the tires wear evenly and settle back down even further.

When you say hands, did you mean the vibration was in the steering wheel, or were you experiencing a rear vibraiton (seats and console). Thanks!

I agree on the alignment. I always take my new rides to my front end and tire shop friend for alignment check by some one I have faith in.

 

On the rotate tires yes and no. My friends shop trues and balances my tires on the truck. So if a wheel is removed it must be replaced on the same spot and same studs.

 

When I first started this years ago, my friend said do not worry about rotating the tires. With the truing and spot on wheel/tire on truck balance you will get the full mileage out of the tires. On my first set of LT LTX m/s on my 90 sub, I got over 100,000 miles.

 

My current LTXs are Ps and do not wear as well as the first LTXs or LTs That said, I am at about 58,000 now and look like they will go 70,000 with no problem. No rotation since first truing and balance when installed. Wear is even as back tires wear with traction and front with the steering.

 

If they were not trued and balanced on the truck, I would rotate. Also the truing and on truck balance prevents the uneven wear, cupping and noise you get on aggressive tires.

No problem...I generally don't rotate unless there are some unusual wear patterns, otherwise I leave them be.

I remember seeing the air pressure statements but don't remember what page (out of 102) that it was on. What pressure have you all found to be the best? 32psi as the door says? Reason I ask is because the new ones they installed yesterday are 35 or 36 psi and I can tell the difference in ride (harder). Thanks in advance for the info.

Unless you are carrying a load, do what the door says.

 

And with regard to rotating tires, most shops are getting away from the X pattern and just going front to back. Unless you drive like a Grandma, I don't see how you can have the same wear front and back. Your rear tires don't turn like the fronts do.

As for rotating tires, I prefer the X pattern. Tires will not wear evenly that's why they need to be rotated. Your front tires have more load on them then your rear tires right off the bat. On top of that, the front will wear differently from turning the wheels as well. In my opinion it's better to give the rear tires some time up front, and to switch sides every once and a while. To me this isn't old school logic like we see with 3,000 mile oil changes. This is a matter of physics. Anyway to each his own. That's what I prefer to do though.

The vibration was in the steering wheel. Really did not notice any other. Got that fixed and then got a Range 8 from Range Tech to keep it in 8 cylinder. I am happy camper. Did you find the thread because I can scan and send you the repairs with part numbers if you like. Just message your info.

I did actually find what part numbers you used, but unfortunately my steering wheel is smooth as can be and I am chasing a rear vibration down.

 

For anybody who needs it, this is what gdadlow had done for the steering wheel vibration:

 

Modified exhaust per TAC#71-1280001614

Four new Michelins Roadforce balance LF-16 RF-17 LR-15 RR-26

4 dampeners on exhaust. Vibration dampener mat per TAC #71-12880001614.

For what it's worth--got an email from a lady at the dealership where I bought my truck. It was notifying me of a recall involving the transmission oil cooler connection.

 

I replied (no sarcasm implied):

 

"Is this a recall on the vibration?

Do you or anyone there know anything about that?"
Her response:
"No, this recall is for the connection of the transmission cooler lines to the transmission. A vibration is a characteristic of the 6 speed transmission."

Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
    • Can it still be Assembled II?   Viscosity on the decline by various means. Heat on the rise making that worse. Engine RPM in the tank. Smaller motors with more boost trying to emulate an electric motor. Full torque, zero rpm. Then we will triple the OCI. Argh.    But wait....there is more. LSPI has pushed a shift from Ca to Mg and as that cost more PLUS the run to lower sulfur compounds the TBN is moving in the wrong direction for the increased OCI's demanded.    That not being enough to placate a demand for a parameter they can't measure the other sulfur bearing compounds are also under attack. That would be zinc and phosphorus sulfonate compounds. To some degree those are being replaced with boron esters and others, i.e. titanium ect. All of which have shorter service lives. And there there is the "Secrete Sauce" marketing for AW adds that 'Can't be detected by UOA's" but trust me because I (the blenders) never ever lie.    Spoiler alert; ALL additives are sacrificial! Smaller amounts of the old blended with less robust versions of the new do not equal longer service lives. So what are the blenders recommending? Wait for it.......   MOVING THE GOAL POSTS! OMG      Let's declare the long standing TAN/TBN crossover irrelevant and tell people that soot is a great 'graphite' based lubricant which can aid tribo films. Wait, what? Let's declare that the standards used for oxidation and nitration were to conservative and can be expanded. Let's tell them that because GDI fuel dilution, although being a VISCOSITY KILLER and an acid generator is actually okay because we have better base oils that limit viscosity failure limits. (Said knowing this is measured in fractions of a centipoise and in bases not commonly used in shelf oils)   Lying from the heart is not just the new normal but we have a public, a very young public, that is so ignorant of the facts and so sure of their "RESEARCH" into AI driven models base in regurgitated  instead of scientific research based unvarnished, peer reviewed FACTS that the incoming guard is loosing their grip on reality and the OEM's are tickled pink while the blends bend the knee.    You have an ever limited set of tools to work with. And sooner or later those will be taken from you as the API and the EPA strangle the last remaining fluids from the system. What you have left is your wits. If you care to use them.    At some point in the very near future it will not longer be possible to do "What is best for the machine", and be replaced with "The best you have access too". You WILL be rewarded with half the life and twice the cost. That isn't that hard to predict.         
    • I trust you saw the other comment where he knew what he was talking about !. Yes, these darned newer vehicles with all their so smart they are stupid technology, goes and drains the battery down. As you might see my other comment, I installed a Noco 5 battery tender under the hood and at this point still have the cord routed so I have to lift the hood and then plug it in but am typically parked in a garage or a shed so its not risking the engine hood in the wind. That way I am assured or hopefully so of not finding I have a battery drawn down and can't even start the truck and that also damages the battery to draw it down too far. 
    • I guess no surprise my guesses were wrong !, at least now I know if I ever happen to see it grayed out in my own truck as to what is going on.    I never happened to catch my truck with it grayed out, it seemed every time I would test to see if there was an update it never found anything and yet more than once I would check to see if there was an update and there was nothing, then a day later or even that same morning I would drive to town and after more than one engine shut down in town as I did my errands it would pop up that there is an update now ready to install and the only place I have a connection to the internet is at home by wifi so its not as if it grabbed the download while driving. I don't trust these new vehicles due to all the crap they can decide to do while sitting for some days not running and run the battery down so most of the time if I know the truck will sit for a few days I plug in the battery tender I have mounted under the hood and so the only time the truck must have downloaded software was when it was sitting in the garage where the signal is awful but I have that tender plugged in and somehow it managed to download it. I honestly detest all this crap, way to easy to leave a person stranded.    Since I don't trust any of it I don't do the install of the already downloaded software until I get home and sometimes have even sat in the truck to watch what its doing as its going through the process to its conclusion as its not like it is set up that it will tell you the next time you fire up the engine that the update that was initialed actually installed or installed properly. Yes I can go into the updates and see the list. After I go through the install where I feel its safe to do so in case it breaks down as a result, I will plug in the battery tender after the fact to recharge as I don't know how much power its taking just to do the install and that can take a while for it to install. 
    • Thanks for the reply. All settings were correct and the engine was off, as it was supposed to be. It turned out to be something simple. I took a drive for about an hour. I must have had a low battery without knowing it. The voltage gauge on the display looked ok. At the end of my drive, I shut off the engine and the update prompt came up and it updated normally. It’s ironic because one of the features of the update is a reduction of battery drain.
