Been about 19 months now since I joined the forum and bought my truck. Been quite a few months since I've been on this topic. 585 pages now. wow. I have 44k on my '14 and it vibes at 77+. Usually only if it's hot or in the sun. At night and early morning's it's much better. My truck took a while to start, but it does. 30k it started. Thankfully mine is not "bad" like some i've seen on youtube. Guess I'm lucky in that regard. Figured I'd check in and see if there is a true solution yet. Guess not.

It's so frustrating , I find the 2016 GMC Sierra Denali a beautiful truck and would love to buy one. But due to the vibration problems, I'm scared to make that decision. It must shipped to Europe, so I don't have any warranty from GMC, only from the dealer.

Snide comment aside, your comment actually proves a point I've tried to make all along. Everyone feels vibration to a different extent. One person may feel a small vibration and consider it uncomfortable while another will not feel a much larger amplitude vibration. You're Harley example is 100% proof of that....typical Harley owners obviously don't find that amount of vibration bothersome, yet many folks would find it quite objectionable. (I wonder what the Picoscope would measure on your favourite hard-tail!)

That said, most owners of these new generation GM brand pickups previously had GM brand pickups, and most almost immediately noticed an elevated vibration that was not present in their previous truck, and was bothersome. That's what brought them to this website. I truly believe most people on this thread did not sit down one day and go "gee, I wonder if I can go find an issue with my truck on the Internet and tie up dozens or hundreds of hours on it". Sure, there are always a few bored ramble-rousers with nothing better to do than stir things up. But I believe most folks on here simply want a vehicle that's at least as smooth as the one they traded in or sold!

Why hello Wench, how ya been? Thought you were going to buy go a Ram and move on! Don't tell you went and bought "another GM"? NO! Tell me it ain't so! Just can't let this forum go can you? Haha!

 

At any rate, glad I could help you explain what you were unable to after how many hundred posts? Well, let us know what you're driving now, vibration free no doubt, lol :)

I'm in the process of finding a local shop that has a on-vehicle driveshaft balance machine. That might help balance out even the pinion or diff a bit. I measured my drive line angles a few months ago and still to this day believe they are wrong. I work a crap ton of hours and when I called the dealers and they said GM does not make shims for the rear leafs.... I kind of put that issue on the back burner and went on to my catch can and 45k drive line fluid changes. I will be re-visiting the drive line angles. I've custom built axle swapped trucks and my rock crawler ran smoother on the HWY than my '14 silverado. I think this whole vibration issue is a cumulative issue. Stiffer frames, stiffer suspension etc. Then you throw in not very tight tolerance on QC for the parts (IE driveshafts, R&P's etc) and you have a vibration. I plan on doing two things. 1- make sure the driveshaft is balanced and my own eyes witnesses it. 2- correct the drive line angles. And when I'm due for new tires at 75k, I will as always personally witness the Hunter 9700 RF Balance. Beyond those items it will become too time consuming to chase.... and mine is not that bad. Just slightly annoying.

If you ride around all day, every day, at 80 mph constantly looking for a vibration maybe. Do these trucks vibrate at all speeds, from 1 to 77 mph? Or just 78-79-80 mph?

My engine is rough, so that alone adds to the vibration in mine. I have tried a few different brands of fuel system cleaner, and this past weekend even added a double dose to my tank before traveling 400 miles on the mass pike & NY thruway and back another 400 miles on those same roads. None of that has helped the rough engine. In addition i have excess vibration at multiple speeds, yes the worst is around 76-80 mph, but I have a critical points at 46, 56, and 67 mph. why? I have no idea. I took a new video of the water bottle test while on this trip to show the vibration after GM has now claimed my truck is now fixed.... well you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. In addition, I tested the water bottle on transmission tunnel, and it was perfectly smooth, so based upon previous comments my vibration is from the rear of the truck.

 

Mine vibrates randomly in the 30s then stops and picks back up around 70-85 ish. Damndest thing. Heck sometimes on long nonstop trips it will vibrate at 80, then go away midtrip but return before i ever stop but still going 80 ( we have toll roads with 80-85 mph limits here).

I havn't noticed it going away, but I have noticed that it gets worse when going around curves or on inclines.

This is me. Id love to not have to jack with this headache. My '12 GMC i traded in had no issues. I miss that truck

Drove a friend's 2016 F150 recently, reminded me of the ride in my 2012 Sierra. My 2014 Sierra can't compete for ride quality. When I traded in I had no idea that the Sierra redesign was going to leave me wanting my old truck back. I think GM screwed the pooch when they updated the Sierra.

FYI all the fuel system cleaner in the gas tank will not clean the intake valves or throttle body on a direct injection engine. If your rough running engine is due to dirty intake valves or throttle body, those need to be cleaned manually. The TB can be removed easy and thoroughly cleaned with TB cleaner. You can then wipe out the inside of the intake. Then once you have the TB reinstalled you can use a good deep cleaner into the intake tract to clean the intake valves. I like Seafoam spray every 10000 miles or so. And in my opinion, a catch can system should be standard on all direct injection engines.

Totally. My 2011 Silverado was flawless. I did NOTHING to it. Worst thing I ever did was trade it in for the 2014

Yea, I've seen a number of people say that, however I have seen a few people say that the system cleaners had helped some, so I just wanted to give it a shot.

My '14 Sierra Z71 5.3 with factory 20" wheels also developed the dreaded 72 mph shake at around 17,500 miles. Bought some new tires, didn't completely cure it but improved at first, then, slowly got worse and worse up to 24,000 miles... Had my tires rotated, re-mounted and road-force balanced to .000, thinking that would surely do the trick. No dice. After reading so many articles and posts about the issue online, I solved my problem. Deciding I wasn't going to embark on a mission of back-and-forth to the dealer to try and have them diagnose and cure an obvious systemic design flaw, I traded in the "Black Bueaty" on a new F-150 Platinum 3.5 Ecoboost FX4. Love the new truck and all the technology Ford stuffs into it. Apologies to all you die-hard GM guys but, it's built in Michigan, not Mexico and, so far anyway, it's a fantastic truck. Good luck to those of you still seeking a cure for the bad-vibes. Sincerely.

 

I'll plan on popping back in from time to time and check on how everyone's making out...

2015 crewcab 4x4 5.3L shortbox.

 

Mine's smooth as glass - or so I thought. Speed limits around me are 55-60 most everywhere.

Was going 70+ the other day and suddenly found the vibration. Had to slow to about 55 for it to go away. Could then go back up to 65 no issues.

I don't know what to think about that - but sounds like im wasting my time with the dealer and balance.

Since its not going to arise often for me, and 99% of my driving is 65 or less I can live with the situation. When I noticed it, I'd say it was a mild imbalance kind of level. Noticable to annoying., esp. if day to day you had to drive 70 on an interstate. 4-5 out of 10, where 10 is sell the dam truck. If I had it constantly at the speeds I drive I'd be upset - so i can feel for those who live in a different area.

This Article came out March 2016, Proof & fact that there is a vibration issue in these trucks. End of discussion to the trolls on here. Don`t give the trolls on here any responses, because there trolls=idiots! And the moderator or owner of this site don`t care for your problems either.     • 286,740 Mile Services   8/6/2026   New AC Compressor. Refrigerant oil and dye, evacuate and charge system.  New exhaust system from cat back.  New Iridium plugs plus replace #3 coil Repair/rewire headlamp wiring (passenger side) and replace all forward bulbs. Polish lenses of both assemblies.  Pull rear rotors, clean and adjust parking assembly. Inspect, clean and grease front calipers. Check pads and shoes.  4 wheel power bleed of brake system. Dot 4 Reset idle speed 50 rpm higher New Serpentine belt.    Will need new pads in the rear in about 5K more miles.    Tax Title and License out the door just short of a grand.    AC clutch had bitten the dust. 1 year warranty on the pick and save replacement. Thing will make a Polar Bear cry Uncle.  He spent quite some time on the wiring. It was in the harness and he does nothing half. I got off cheap. I have considerable more light down the road. Sylvania Silver Star replacements.  Gas seal between the porcelain and shell of plug #3 was blown, cooked the coil. That was the cold miss.  Love the new exhaust. I can sneak into the neighborhood again.  Nice to have a working parking brake again. Belle Tire never got it done. That was disappointing.    This was one of her bigger bills and still way cheaper than a payment even given the oil consumption. This thing cost me under a hundred a month in repairs and normal routine costs. What is my incentive to replace it? 🤔           
    • hello I recently bought a 2012 gmc 1500 with a 5.3 and have a AFM disabler on it I'm interested in doing a cam but I'm worried if I remove the AFM system I will fail smog does anyone have info if they are able to detect that or a work around to it (not talking about hot smogging) please let me know thank you  
    • Update. I started chasing down my symptoms. Started first with pulling valve covers and looked at everything. Everything looked good and couldn't hear or feel anything different. Then a compression test. 240 psi or really close on each cylinder. I was worried I was a tooth off of timing. Not bad for an engine with 173,000. Granted I did put new heads on. I sprayed water around the injector area to see if I could hear a change. Nothing. I hooked up my new hp tuner which I should have done in the first place but I don't really know what I'm looking at just yet but am learning. I noticed the fuel trims were way off so that told me I have to have either a bad injector or exhaust leak. New injectors, so I did the shop vac on blower and in the tail pipe. Sprayed soapy water and found the exhaust flange on the drivers side was leaking. I didn't think it would be that considereding I pulled the heads and left the manifolds attached. I did have the transmission replaced not long ago. They must have not seated them properly but I guess I didn't notice. I put in new gaskets on both sides. Which by the way isn't a bad job but I had a hard time getting them to seal right. Took two attempts. Reset the fuel trims and the ticking is gone, engine runs smooth and acceleration has improved. Got to feel the real difference with that stage 1 cam. It's not that big of a difference but it does add a little more. It feels like how the truck should have been from the factory.
    • Can it still be Assembled I?    Stribeck says that we need a certain amount of viscosity under conditions of load and velocity to prevent two surfaces of a know roughness from tearing each other asunder. And we have marketing trying to tell the masses that those two surfaced require less of that commodity due to more exact limits being placed on the same old clearances. We also know that there are limits to how hard something can before it becomes to brittle to be viable and to smooth to 'wet' the surface and that both of those conditions have been known and met since about the Second World War.    That viscosity value shook out at 10 centistokes at 212 F just under a hundred years ago.  Give this a look: [Anton Parr]     What is advertised is the Kinematic viscosity (mm2/s) or that which has been density adjusted but the value we are after is the dynamic viscosity (mPa.s) or true viscosity. You can see that this number is dependent on density thus base stock and temperature. You can also see that an SAE 30 doesn't reach that value in this example. However an SAE 30 that is at the upper end of the SAE 30 range; 12.5 cSt (mm2/s), might. 12.5 * .83 = 10.375 (mm2/s). If you could find an SAE 30 at the upper end these days.   Then there is the complication of viscosity modifiers or VII or VM, whatever you wish to call them. Polymers added to very thin base oils, perhaps 3 to 6 cP oils, that will meet the SAE *W30 spec at 'tested' shear rates and 100 C/212F  target temperature. So a polymer fortified base that is a fraction of the 10 cP requirement Stribeck insist upon.   This could be all well and good if those polymers didn't have two very problematic 'features'. They shear or loose viscosity both 1.) permanently and 2.) temporality. And they do both omitted in the advertised data with the distinct  purpose of deceiving the consumer of the actual operating state of the fluid. I've shown the example of Warren Oils COSTCO 10.91 cSt 5W30 formuation several times where the 100 C HTHS value is 6.9 cP!! That's the temporary shear down and with and SSI or shear stability index of 9.4 cSt. Note the intentional deception in using mixed units?    After a short while that 9.4 cSt oil has a viscosity corrected dynamic value of 7.8 cP. But as the SSI is still within the range of an SAE *W30 whose lower value is 9.3 cSt.    This allows them to continue to call this SAE 16 weight oil a 30 weight, the cake, and still meet the API requirements for fuel efficiency IMPROVEMENT mandated by the EPA. The eating of the cake. By the time you've worn out your motor doing the responsible thing by adhering to the warranty requirements, (the stick), you get deprived of the carrot, wear control. So sad, to bad.   So what can be done? Do I need actually say? [Anton Parr]       Even this must be monitored if the oil is on the low side and the VII an organic or you opt for a 0W40 with an even lighter base oil and more / higher MW VII. (Note the lower density of the 40 weight versus the SAE 30 mono-weight?)    There is another workaround. Temperature. An SAE *W30 run at a bulk temperature of between 180 and 195 F.    Being the belt and suspenders sort I am I do both. Run it cook and run it heavy.    In Part II I'll work the AW package.
