The red flag for me was when the dealer parts counter told me GM doesn't make shims for the rear axle.... I'd have to buy them aftermarket. That in itself pretty much tells you why they vibrate. Mass produced cars and you know the angles are not perfect on all of them. I'm doing a 45k service today. LOF, Tire rotation, brake fluid flush, Tcase fluid etc and I will bust out the angle finder and spend more time on this today.

Might want to find a new dealer. There is definitely a shim kit for our trucks. I was going to order it but haven't yet as I haven't had any time to install it. A few members have ordered it with varying results. Some fixed.

I have given up on trying to find an attorney, nobody wants to touch it since there is no physical injury that can be directly attributed to this. I am sending a final repair notice on Monday and will see where it goes.

Bummer. I feel ya bud! I'm still trying to work with my dealer on mine. Just a shame how bad of a taste this leaves in your mouth.

I followed this topic for a long time. I got a new 16 crew in February and I have felt some distinct vibration twice. I test drove it up to 75 mph before buying it and couldn't feel any vibration but the ride is very busy due to the stiffness of everything so it's just a different ride than my previous vehicles. I felt like it was not easy to detect a vibration because the ride was so busy in general.

 

The two times I felt a vibration were similar circumstances. The truck had been parked on my driveway for 2 to 3 days and I left home and jumped on the interstate which is only about 1.5 miles from my house. In each case, I felt a fairly rapid vibration as soon as I got up to speed on the interstate. I felt it mostly through the steering wheel and it felt very much like flat-spotted tires (Goodyears and 18" LT non-Z71 wheels) just based on the frequency of the vibration. After about 2 miles, the vibration disappeared. I've only noticed this twice in 900 miles, the first time was at about 700 miles. I actually got the 18" wheels partially as a hedge against the vibration issue. I was hoping that the extra sidewall would help absorb a little of it.

 

Because I was aware of this issue all along, I was pretty depressed the first time I experienced it but I've only felt it twice and it disappeared pretty quickly both times so I don't have the bad shakes as described by some of you. Of course, I'm only at 1000 miles so things could still go downhill. I have not had the truck over about 72 mph since the test drive so I don't know how it handles at 80 mph. I sure wish GM would solve this problem for all of the owners. Because it's been going on for 3 model years now, I'm not overly optimistic they are ever going to completely resolve this but hope springs eternal.

I'm so pissed off with Chevrolet over the whole fiasco I doubt I'd ever own another GM product. I've already had four friends of mine trade out of theirs into Ram's after letting them drive mine around for a bit.

 

On a side note; I decided to drive a Ram home the past couple nights for a break, and I forgot just how freaking nice they are. The Hemi flat destroys that under powered POS 5.3. It rides like a Cadillac compared to the Chevy and the trans is light years ahead of the garbage 6 spd as well.

 

I know Ram doesn't build a perfect truck either (I am really going to miss the seats in my Chevy), but they are a long ways ahead of the bowtie brigade ATM.

Putting aside the pounded to sand vibration issue; your comparison of the Gen Five 5.3 vs the Hemi 5.7 is not exactly "apples to apples". Btw, the Gen Five is as much a hemi as the Ram Hemi. Actually, both engines are what used to be called back in the day a semi-hemi head design. Chrysler has not built a true hemi head engine with dual rocker arm shafts per head since the 70's. Today, if you want a true hemi you'll need to buy truck with a DOHC engine, meaning a Tundra or F-150. Sorry :)

Ummm, actually that is incorrect. As everyone knows; Hemi is short for hemispherical, which describes the combustion chambers shape allowing for more efficient exhaust scavenging. The name had nothing to do with the numbers of rocker arms. ;)

 

So yes, the Ram still utilizes a Hemi engine.

 

Either way; how does this have any relevance to the post that I made, and how is it not an apples to apples comparison. Arguing over semantics of engine design doesn't change the outcome.

 

Does the Ram have a "insert whatever name here you like" engine? Yup.

 

Is this motor considerably better (better is kind of vague so you can insert more powerful, smoother, more efficient, etc) than the Chevy's? Yup.

Edit: I will say that I would take the 6.2 over the Hemi but unfortunately Chevy only allows you to get that motor in an LTZ configuration or High Country (and that package is embarrassing on what you get for what you pay), and chromed out trucks went out of style in the 90's lol.

Ummm, well, you're partially right. You go the definition of Hemi correct. But. You're wrong on the rest of your supposition. The Hemi that made Richard Petty The King, aka The Elephant, The Beast, utilized the dual rocker arm shafts on each head to achieve as you correctly pointed out, optimum breathing performance with intakes on top and exhausts on the bottom. However, this design required huge heads which added considerable weight and size to the engine. Neither GM or Ram has a hemispherical combustion chamber. Both of their subject pushrod engines, while not the old wedge head design with inefficient side by sides valves, utilize a compromise design via pylons for rocker arm mounts. Thereby, their combustion chambers are elliptically shaped thus the semi-Hemi reference. Not that this is an inferior design as a slightly slower burn delivers more torque than a quicker burn. So, design folks must achieve optimum situation between rpm and torque. Anyway, there's plenty of info about this if you want to Google. Also, as a side-side note, the pushrod is not an inferior design to the DOHC as its lighter and less expensive. But, doesn't have high rpm capability which is not important unless into Formula 1 or Indy racing.I didn't intend to be so wordy but, just drinking coffee on a Sunday morning :)

I have a 2016 Silverado LTZ Z71 and it shakes like crazy in idle and it feels like a rock is stuck in the tires when driving. The transmission also slips between 1st and 3rd gear during breaking and acceleration. GM know there is a problem with the new product, but won't do anything to fix it and told me it is how the truck is designed to perform. After visiting the shop twice they refuse to see it for the third time because of the lemon law. I consulted a few mechanics and realized Chevy or GM is not doing what the can to resolve the issues. There are more than one possible solution for the shake, it is not only the motor mount, it could possibly be the transmission mount, transmission yoke, or rear differential.

I am a Soldier ready to deploy and would like to put this problem behind, but GM rep will not do anything to help. I was pretty much told to trade my truck in for a new one and lose over $9k due to depreciation. My truck currently have less than 3k miles, and this problem is covered under warantee. I am very disappointed and wrote to the Federal Trade Commission, Consumer Affairs, and I am currently drafting a letter to Congress with other people signatures to protest GM's corporate subsidies and tax breaks. I will also write to my State's Attorney General and possibly file a law suit against GM. I will continue to follow blogs and social media chats about GM products and exercise my Freedom of Expression and express my feelings about GM costumer relation experience I had. I will also tell every Soldier and Airman about my experience and I will let them sit in my truck to see it so they won't make the same mistake as me. I refuse to spread positive words about GM vehicles when they refuse to what is right.

GM refuse to do what is right for the consumers after we, the consumers (tax payers) bailed them out. Don't forget, GM had an honesty issue with defects, remember the ignition switch scandals. Tax payers give GM over $3.5B each year in corporate subsidies and they outsourced their business to Mexico and over charged American for crappy products. I deeply regret buying a GM vehicle. I thought I was doing the right thing by purchasing an American product, but I was mistaken.

Just in case any GM rep reading this want to know who I am, my last name is Chau and I own a white 2016 Silverado LTZ and had called many times complaining about the issues.

So, I have followed this thing since last July, and I am done with it...

Here is where I am;

GM has offered zero assistance and have denied the problem, doing nothing. The hell with the bums.

BBB sided with GM ( follow the funding and it is easy to see why). Also gave the BBB a failing grade when the state asked for feedback.

Filed a formal complaint with the State Attorney Generals office against GM

Fired the dealer, the hell with them too (and offered my kids money NOT to buy anything for this dealer, or GM for that matter).

Lowes did help reduce the vibration for me though; they sold me four 60lb sand bags that I installed in the box, forward of the axle

Plan to sell or trade for non-GM ASAP

Like everyone else my 2016 Z71 Crew cab shakes and of course they cant fix it. Well my father in law has a 2015 Double cab 4x4 and he claims no shake at all. He said he has been up over 90 mph numerous times and it is smooth. His truck is a 6cyl. What difference are there in the drive terrain between the 5.3 and 4.3? His truck also has Bridgestone tires.

For the money they are asking for these vehicles, they should not have issues like this. GM still has ways to go as far as quality control is concerned. I am also surprised that the ride is so harsh with the Z71 suspension. It is not that bad on my '06 truck which I will keep because my mileage is so low and I am afraid that I might end up with headaches with a new one..

I've read several reviews about the new twins. And, when comparing how they ride, most of these evaluations point out that the Z71 rides rougher than the standard 1500. Guess it pays to do ones homework . About quality control; there's always room for improvement for sure. But, out of curiosity, I went to the F-150 Forum (appearance is almost same as this one, guessing the same people own both) and did a search and found twelve pages of subforums addressing vibration, shake, etc. so, those who believe that these issues are unique to the GM twins should do some research.

Traded my '14 high country 4X4 one year ago for a '15 platinum FX4. Couldn't be happier. I'll never go back to chevy. No vibrations , no radio issues , seat issues , nothing.

I'm guessing they do use many of the same suppliers. Different specs, drawings, etc, of course. However, many components such as electronics, valves, switches, etc, are exactly the same.

    • The problem with failure rates or increase failures are there’s people who don’t have a problem. What are you doing wrong they say. We had 4 5.7 GM diesel’s in the family when they came out. One was flawless. My uncle who happened to be the most abusive. Early rotary engines were known to use oil. I abused my first car so bad in six months I replaced the clutch, transmission and rear end. It didn’t use oil. My brother in law has a 2013 Tahoe and an older Yukon. The Yukon has 280K miles. The Tahoe around 175K. He runs them to about 300K. If his lifters fail before that time he would consider it a failure. My Hondas, I know people hate it when I mention them. Identical engines. One with cylinder deactivation one doesn’t have it. One shudders when the eco light goes on or off. Cylinder deactivation. But wait! According to the web. It can happen with lock up too. So now people in the know are changing the oil and transmission fluid more often. Then you read it could be a programing issue. So what do you do? There’s lots of money involved. I see three ways to deal with it. One only works if you don’t drive lots of miles. Lease, never get out of warranty. Or only buy older vehicles with a good track record. They all have bad runs. Usually when there’s a change. Even Toyota and Honda. 
    • Question @diyer2 on this line if you please. Are you saying the shudder is the system turning on and off at the frequency of the shudder? Guess I'm asking if you are saying you have seen it do this with the bi-direction scan tool in graph mode? If so have you been able to discern the 'trigger'. Something is telling to cycle rapidly.    My truck just started doing this recently. 197K on the clock. My response has been M5 anything under 55 mph. I treat it like a lugging stick shift. Gear down and let it spin a bit. Engauge M5, then tow mode and then M6 lets the trans stay in 5th but the AFM is active. Smooth like Skippy.    My thought was that as a machine ages the friction gets lower and as the system is load based, the lower friction would allow it to turn on at ever lower rpm until it reaches the lugging point. And yes I am ignorant of any minimum rpm requirement for the system. If you know that would be useful information.    As you know I run a Scan-Gauge II which allows me to watch the On/Off of the signal to the VLOM. While in the shudder mode I'm not seeing is cycle at that frequency or at all for that matter outside the triggers @newdude posted a few years back. Now is it possible that the refresh rate isn't fast enough to catch it? Maybe. It is why I asked my first question about graphing and trigging parameter.     As we have observed from members here the failure point is all over the map miles wise as you note yourself in your opening post. That by itself begs a few questions like fellows that comment on these lifters failing even after the system has been disabled.     • UPDATE 2: Steering wheel control backlights and control of the cluster can supposedly be achieved by adding a wire to pin 20 of the cluster and tapping it to pin 2 of the main clock spring harness. I'm going to give it a shot - will update  
    • GM Global A pickups 2019-2022 can do OTA programming for the radio.  GM VIP (GM Global B) can do OTAs for almost every module on board.  So a 2022.5 and newer pickup can do OTAs for recalls like the 2.7 fuel flow recall.  EVs get OTAs that improve one pedal driving, radio issues, HVAC issues, updated battery management software, etc.     So age of the vehicle/what GM electrical platform its on will alter what amount of updates can be pushed on OTAs.  
    • Thank You.   So far my new ride is making me look like a genius for going with the 3.0L, as my first fuel refill occurred over three weeks from when I took delivery.  This engine combination is very amazing.  So far no issues and had not done a regen yet.
