2014 5.3 to 6.2 engine swap

What if any issues would be involved in this swap as far as ECM's go... I can get a 2014 6.2 and Trans with 52xx miles on the clock and the (ECM) which is almost the miles I have on my 5.3 for cheap.. REAL CHEAP!!

I have driven the truck with the roof cut off (Total Loss) and it has had a RX cc on it since 400 miles so I know it's clean and oil has been changed twice, the truck runs VERY VERY well!

Can I plug and play the ECM and drop the 6.2 in? Will the computer have to go through the learning and cranking process?

It also has the 9.76 axle and has 3.73's which I can get the whole axle assembly for $500 which I am going to get regardless.

I am wanting to do this plus installing a TVS1900 Mag also and can do this well under $8000 including AR Headers. Any engine swap ECM gurus please chime in!

Even if you don't put it in your truck it would be a great engine for a project vehicle

I would imagine everything should be able to swap right over. Should be pretty damn close to plug n play!

You will have a badass ride then!

I would think you would just swap it out and then you'll need a tune. You will have to change a few things like exhaust (diff size) and maybe other things like that. Since you'll have the motor out out you might as well put some headers on it.

I was prepared to ask why not just buy a new truck, but with the entry point, sounds like you should do this! I would think you could either reprogram your ECM, or just replace it, no? FWIW, the engine bay has quite a bit of room to work even with the 6.2L planted in it.

Cant get a 6.2L in the Reg cab tho. That is what OP is after.

I just wasn't sure when ECM was swapped that I would have to have the dealership do anything. and yes I will be doing headers and a TVS1900 supercharger also with a BB tune and the 3.73's.

Immediate thoughts are the converter and tuning as differences but with the trans and engine you got that covered. Curious if converter is different, assume it would be.

As far as the ECM, not sure if it is easier to have a custom tuner just flash yours or to swap ECM. Very curious about this though. If you do it, start a build thread.

Oh I definitely will. Leaning towards getting the Engine, trans, for a project anyway and $3000 for everything seems alittle hard to pass up and the 9.76 w/3.73's will be going into my truck regardless.

Yeah that seems like a steal. Gonna have a truck that moves even without a blower.

I would just have the tune in your ECM updated, the ECM/TCM/BCM are all married together to some degree now. You will have a lot less head aches if you just put your transmission behind the new engine and use your ECM and have someone flash your stock ECM with the 6.2L engine tune. Otherwise the ECM/TCM from the 6.2l is going to have the VIN in them from the donor vehicle and I am not sure if anyone has the ability to change that info yet.

Thanks that is what I was thinking but wasn't sure about the VIN# issue. If I am splitting engine and trans I might as well go with a little more converter also. Geez does this ever end? LMFAO!!!

That is a crazy deal for a 6.2, does it include the trans as well? For the ECU, both trucks run the same E92 ECU with different calibrations. As others have mentioned you would want to reuse your original computer and have it setup for the 6.2. Should be a very simple swap.

When I was looking for an LS to swap into my Jeep the old 6.2 and trans with low miles like that was over $10k.

$3k seems like a steal. You almost have to buy it just to find something to put it in. :)

    • have you stuck with dealer oil changes since then? I made the same switch after getting tired of crawling around under the truck, but I’ve found some dealers are way better than others about getting you in quickly. Curious if yours has been good about scheduling or if you’ve had to look elsewhere for quicker turnaround.
    • Thank you.   I am set on a 3.0 Duramax as my previous truck with a Ford Ecoboost had just as many, if not more, "common" issues.  Cam phasers, timing chain issues, 10-speed valve body and CDF drum, emissions issues, etc.  So I figured, why not get 2x the fuel mileage (these things got 27+mpg on every mixed city/highway test drive I put them through) and better towing capability with resale value to boot?   My minimum, shortest trip will be 50 miles 1-way and I regularly go out of state with a travel trailer.  I'm planning on using this for a marketing/event promotion business also, which would require regular towing of trailers for bands, DJs, sound and lighting gear, along with my personal camera gear for filming events.   Looked at other trucks in the $30k+ price range but the issues seem to be everywhere, plus too many with gaudy mods.  I'm literally sticking with RWD trucks because they tend to be actually used as trucks, vs. the 4x4 models I've seen with unsafe lifts, huge tires, and general mods that would affect reliability (I'm wondering if some of them were tuned, hence the aggressive throttle response and hard shifting).   So my goal is to find a stock, 3.0 with 1 or 2 owners, in good physical condition, and decently well maintained.  Can't seem to find that up here, everything in the $27-30k range has had multiple owners, smoke smell, issues, or body damage.  Or the ridiculously modified trucks with 80k miles for under $27k but lots of problems...
    • That’s pretty tough Grumpy. I reread the previous few posts. They all reference oil changes. Much like your last thread. In my humble opinion it keeps things interesting.
    • Engine Wear and ISO 4406   1.) Cold Starts. 2.) High Particle Count. 3.) Low operating temperature viscosity and high low temperature cranking viscosity. 4.) Depleted AW, Friction and Acid packages.  5.) High engine load.    https://me.caltexlubricants.com/en_me/home/learning/from-chevron/heavy-duty-diesel-vehicles-and-equipment/The-Importance-of-Clean-Engine-Oil-and-Its-Impact-on-Equipment-and-Business-Performance.html   High particle counts have five sources. 1.) They are manufactured within the engine. Both wear debris and amalgamation of degradation products and combustion driven soot (worse in GDI). 2.) They are ingested via intake air. Ever hear the best oil filter is a good air filter? 3.) They are entrained in the fuel. 4.) This one is insidious. They are introduced in 'fresh oil'. 5.) They are introduced during the oil change.   ISO 4406 is the test that measures and quantifies the combine effects of all of the above particle related issues. You can mitigate your way into multiples of engine life by being attentive to them all.    https://www.hyprofiltration.com/blog/is-new-oil-clean   (from the link above)    [Quote] What Is the Recommended ISO 4406 Cleanliness Code for New Oil?   A good upper limit for new oil cleanliness is 16/14/11 (ISO 4406). Typical new oil usually has ISO codes of 19/17/15 or worse, which is far too dirty for sensitive components. This can be a major cause of degradation and premature failure.
