Last week I had 4 new Michelin Defender LTX M/S tires installed. After few days driving I am happy to report that most of the vibration is gone. There is a small intermittent vib at around 125kph.

These tires are phenomenal.

Hello,

My name is Tim Esterdahl and I'm a freelance automotive journalist working on a story for Pickuptrucks.com. Search my name and you will see it is legit. I'm hoping to find someone I can talk to in detail about this issue who recently purchased a new truck. A 2016 would be great, but a 2015 would be OK as well.

I realize this is a bit of a "dead horse" on this forum after scanning some other threads and I certainly don't aim to offend anyone. Instead, I'd like to collect some information and run a story educating consumers on this potential issue.

If you are interested in sharing your story, please contact me here or at tim @ tecreativeservices.com.

I'll also be in the 1962 Chevy threads since I'm currently working on mine. :)

Are those the 20 inch rims you had the tires mounted on? I couldn't find defenders in 18 inch, so I just had the LTX MS2 tires installed. Two had to be replaced after 200 miles due to highway vibration. They were 16 and 19 lbs on the rfb. I picked it up today and the highest measurement was 10lbs with a greatly improved ride. They tech was helpful in that he went by the GM vibration diag sheet for balancing tires and tested them on two of the shops balancers to make sure all the numbers were the same. I am waiting two months, including an 1800 mile trip before putting bilsteins on the front. That way if it returns, back to the dealer I go.

Hi Tim,

It's not beating a dead horse. I am sure today, someone signed papers for a new truck and has or will have this vibration problem. There are many people on here who can help you out with your information request. Right now, GM is the absolute, best sales person for the Ford, Toyota, Dodge and whoever else truck lines.

All manufacturers have problems. The best ones stand behind getting the problem corrected and making sure the customer is taken care of. GM is turning their back on so many customers and service departments are not getting paid what they have in the repair time, so they give up on the customer. Statements like "It's normal" "Within specification" "They all do it" instead of working with the customer and GM to identify and resolve the issues. I was told by a tech this week that it's a truck, it's going to vibrate. Well, I looked through the Silverado marketing material and phrases like "Highly refined and precisely tuned to help squelch vibration for a smoother ride". They should not market this truck as anything related to being comfortable on the highway. It is unreasonable to keep a customer vehicle while the dealership and GM communicate back and forth for diagnostics. My truck was at the dealer for over three weeks. Most days I would stop by and it had not moved in their parking lot and I confirmed no work was performed.

I have always owned GM vehicles, started when I was fourteen (1989) and paid more attention to color and option packages than what the competition had to offer. My 2015 Silverado has changed all of that for me. I save extra money with the full intention of eventually getting rid of this truck and moving to another manufacturer. Gone are my days of trusting anything GM has to say or offer.

Best of luck with your information gathering:)

Well I got a call from my dealer tonight, they decided tot replace the radio, but could do nothing further for the vibration because the truck is within GM's bullshit spec. I'm picking it up tomorrow, I'll update you all on how it is. Likely going to file lemon law.

My rims are 22"

I had called Michelin to see if and when they were going to make the defender in 18s and they only carry it in the smaller 18 inch, I believe for the tacoma size and a few others. No current plans for 265, 275/65/18. I have a friend who put the 20" defenders on his f150 and was very impressed with them as well.

Why aren't they recalling all these trucks for crappy seat frames as well?

Because like the "Chevy Shake", GM does not consider crappy seat frame a safety issue. It's simply a $ issue.

I have a 2015 sierra. the carbon fiber edition with the 22" wheels with 285/45R22. I noticed a pretty good vibration between 70 and 75. I also took it in and had them look at it. Nothing they could do. Service told me that it could be a tire or wheel not balanced completely but the wheel balancer would not get to highway speeds. Owner of the dealership was trying to get with GM and see how they could resolve the issue. Since then, I have purchased a leveling kit and Nitto 305/45R22's and it still does the same. The ride is a little smoother especially over bumps but the vibration is still there.

Well I picked up my truck again today after they finally replaced the radio.....IT STILL DOESN'T F*CKING WORK, I LOST ALL THE HIGHS AND THE VOLUME FADED BEFORE I WAS EVEN OUT OF THE PARKING LOT.....

I'm calling GM and basically telling them I have just picked my truck up from it's 5th repair attempt, and I'm done f*ucking around with this. They now have 2 options, they can buy it back on their own, or I'm filing lemon law, and will bring multiple other suits for fraud should I have to go that route.

I'm DONE with this Bullsh*t

The issue is that GM is selling thousands of trucks. Thousands. There are like what, 20 of us here actively participating that have an actual vibration NOT caused by the wheels or tires? GM or any business out there will take those odds every time. People don't come to forums because they have no issues with their cars, they come here to find solutions. Unfortunately for us, there aren't enough people out there pushing the issue for it to be a cost benefit to GM to put time into fixing these trucks. They don't care. They are still selling trucks, and flooding the market so our trade-in values aren't shit, and they could not care less. GM isn't stupid, they know lemon law is too much hassle for most, they know they'll win most of the time anyways, and by offering $3500 in trade allowance, most of the dubs who buy these piles of shit think they won and will trade in for another pile of shit in a different color. There are too many retards out there who are brand loyal to their sisters, cousins and GM in order to get any of this fixed, and all it does is **** us, who actually care...

Pull the bandaid and get on with your life Jesse, life it too short to mess around with a bs company like GM. I get it, i know not everyone can't afford to just walk away and lose thousands of dollars but that is what the Lemon Law protection is there for. Use it and get your life back.

If a few broke in half in a collision and people got seriously hurt as a result, they would.

I can say that in the last couple weeks alone, I've been at my new dealer 7 times, and 3 of those times someone came in because of the vibration, and 2 times they had someone calling in about it. Don't know if any of them are related, picking it up today someone was calling in about the same radio issues I have....

    • I'm also waiting to see if they confirm Apple CarPlay, because I'm not interested in subscription fees just to use the hardware I already purchased.    In closeups it looks like it gets the Colorado/Canyon center screen based headlight controls which I despise. They also appear to lose all the hard switches for functions like seat heating and cooling, parking sensors, lane control, traction control, etc. which means they're all screen/menu based, so verdict is out on how well those will work with gloves or wet/dirty hands.  Admittedly they don't show the left knee area of the dash, but I don't see hard switches for locker control on the ZR2, and the "mode" switch appears to eliminate the rotary dial with a quick way to access tow/haul.  My 2021 has had multiple screen failures and at times the screen just locks up, goes black, or reboots while driving even after replacement, so loosing the ability to access many of these functions, especially lighting control would be pretty frustrating.   There aren't enough photos or detailed trim details other than one mention of "available microfiber trim" to confirm, but the use of microfiber on the seats and or center console is a deal killer for me.  Just because you drive a ZR2 or High Country, doesn't mean you don't work out of it, and that material is difficult at best to keep clean and looking decent.   Lexus and several other brands are using it on seats, dash, and door panels now, I assume as a cost and weight saving measure,  and it looks horrible 1-2 years into ownership.  I see what appears to be piano black on the doors and center console in some photos, which also has no place in ANY vehicle in my opinion because it mars and scratches too easily, especially for a truck.  Will be interesting to see what GMC comes out with when the Sierra is released as far as materials go.
    • Im a fan.  Simply moving the screen up helps the look of the interior.  I feel like GM dropped the ball on the current gen having the screen not at the same level as the top of the gauge cluster.  The GMCs look better with the vents above the screen to close that gap.
    • I hear you, its just not something one would even think of that the new oil in the container isn't filtered to a spec one would expect it to be.    As to a passenger vehicle theme and the maintenance requirement to meet to ensure a warranty is honored, these days with claims of life time transmission fluid on some models and the limited amount of oil changes that would bring one to the end of the factory warranty, that sells vehicles for those that like to hear "easy care maintenance free", but the manufacturer certainly knows different as to what that more than likely means for the longevity of some of the components if given that minimum spec maintenance. Then again I imagine there are a fair number of people that really don't care as long the vehicle gets them a certain number of years down the road because they are the type that want the next new thing, new and improved ... more bells and crap etc on the new one on the show room floor. Manufacturers have learned the phycological game to entice the customer out of their money !
    • Why soooooo many screens? Shall we just replace the windshield with a large plasma?!?!? Besides that I like the looks. And they added back the additional door cubbies,    No SS???
