Look at how many out of tolerance parts have been replaced on some of your trucks and you still have the shake/vibration.

Tires--out of tolerance

Rims--out of tolerance

Driveshaft--out of tolerance

Pinion nut torque--out of tolerance

Rear axle and diff assembly--out of tolerance

Etc,etc,etc,etc--out of tolerance

 

Guys, there is nothing wrong with these trucks, we purposely designed them this way so stop complaining.

Guys, there is nothing wrong with these trucks, we purposely designed them this way so stop complaining, period!

And this is exactly why there is a monumental difference between Assembled in the USA vs. Made in the USA.

I bought my 2014 Sierra All Terrain SLT Crew Cab on Sept 3rd, since then I have had to replace the left front tire (20 inch sized) with only 500 miles because of a flat spot that made the truck sound like it had a thumping noise going down the highway, at 750 miles it went back again as I was complaining about a rough/vibrating feeling so they put that front left tire on the right rear and said I should be good to go, the vibration only got worse. I took the truck to my regular tire dealer for them to take a look at the balancing, after $40 spent they said the balancing was off an ounce on 2 of the 4 tires/wheels. However they told me that the vibration still did not go away and that I should take it back to the GMC dealership again.

 

Sure enough when they checked it they could feel it as well. The service rep said there were recalls on certain components of the driveline but looking at my VIN he said they were swapped out so they will have to take apart the rear axle housing and the drive shaft, that was yesterday 10/31/14, I 'm told they will have to fiddle with it this coming Monday and the service rep said "Hopefully" we can figure out what it is. That is not comforting to hear a service rep say "Hopefully" when you have dropped almost $50K into a truck. I have owned GMC's for over 24 years and never had a ride problem before. The vehicle only has 2,000 miles now, this is very unsettling if they are not able to fix it.

So my truck only shudders or vibrates when I tow my travel trailer. It does it when you first take off and put a load on the truck. I took it on with my trailer hooked up and the technician rode with me and said oh yeah that not supposed to do that, that's bad. It was in last week for two days to repair a loose bolt inside the transmission that has something to do with tranny pump pressure. It's what GM recommended to try first. It did have the service bulletin issue so I guess I am glad the repaired that issue but it still didn't fix the shudder that happens under hard acceleration while towing a load. So now it's going back in to try the next option the throw at it. I am going to give them three chances and then it's lemon law buy back time for me. The truck is great except for this issue. Well other then the recalls that have already been addressed with so far. So far I am not to impressed that my $53,000 with less then 10,000 miles has been in the shop 4 times.

Boy do i have a story for you guys and gals. Took my 1996 silverado with over 214k miles on it and traded it in on a brand new special order 2014 lt 5.3 all star edition double cab. Oh and the 1996 drove like a cadi from day one, no complaints about that truck what so ever other than she was getting old and not so friendly on the gas and the ac went out a few years back. So I did my research, saw all the comercials on tv with dirty job guy and all about being the quitest truck on the market. So i went to my local dealership told them what i was looking for and they found me one not far from my home(same dealership i bought the 1996 from). Sight un-seen i layed over half down in cash, financed the rest and turned the keys to old betsie over to them, which was like pulling one of my teeth out. Later that day i get a call, and rush to see the new girl of my dreams, and let me tell you its what i was waiting for.

 

Well at least thats what i thought, dont let the looks fool you, and dont ever buy a truck without test driving it. See I work 42 miles from my home and my ride is almost all interstate leaving Georgia and entering Florida where i work. The first few trips back and forth i was amazed how quit the ride was, but noticed a light whining noise throughout the cab, thinking well its new so maybe it will go away. That was the second mistake i made, it kept getting worse until it got to a point that it was driving me crazy. So with 1100 miles on my new truck i take it in to be looked at, had to take the service manager for a ride to prove it was making a noise. Sure enough he agreed it wasnt normal and told me they would get it fixed. Well 28 days later and 2 trips back only to prove the noise was still there, they finally found the problem and it was at last quiet as a church mouse.

 

As far as i know this is what i was told they replaced, first thing they did was rebuilt the rear axle, told me the ring and pinion was set up wrong so they reworked it, that did nothing for the noise. The next thing they did was ordered and installed a brand new transmission, that did quiet down the whine but it was still there. Next they changed out the drive shaft/transmission yoke assy, still no luck. So they found a donor truck and removed the rear end from it and installed it in my truck, still no luck. Last thing they did was swapped out the drive shaft, bammmmm, no more noise.

 

Now i know this has nothing to do with vibrations, but it gets better, I drive my truck back and forth to work for a week and one morning on the way i notice a very slight vibration thinking nothing about it, maybe road conditions maybe those good gy sra's. But the vibration got worse after 400 miles with all my new parts installed. So I do what any person would do, I take it back to my dealer to have the tires checked, knowing it prob not the tires all of a sudden causing this vibration. They ensure me that the road force checked out and all was in spec and also told me they drove the truck and it doesnt vibrate.

 

This is what im experiencing atm, on smoth freshly paved interstate where my 1996 was smooth as glass with bfgr comp ta's, my truck now at speeds starting around 65 and above will vibrate the steering wheel and floor boards, and it comes and goes without warning. One minute smooth next i cant stand to drive it, really vibrates and has a chugging feeling after its in v4 and has a noticable jerk in and out of v8, shifts rough from 2nd to 3rd, and makes a loud metalic ping when leaving from a dead stop. All of which was described the last time I dropped the truck off to have the tires checked and i was told it has no vibrations.

 

I really want to love my new chevy silverado, its has everything i want in a truck, but im about at my wits end with this thing. I have been very patient with my service department and i have giving them every operturnity to make me happy. I dont want to be a ford owner, but im going to test drive some this weekend, and if they feel any better than what i have now, i may be a new ford owner.

 

 

Call the BBB they will call your dealer and start the buy back or trade.

My 14 does the same thing. Bad vibrations when it's cold....once it gets warmed up, vibrations are still there, just not as bad.

Well im not throwing in the towel just yet, its back to the shop this week for another drive shaft and a few other things they want to try first. My service department wants to make me happy, and to be honest, i do feel for those guys, its not their fault. As a mechanic i know how important quality parts are when trying to fix something. Im just beginning to wonder just how much money they are actually saving by having components made in another country. Do we have quality control inspectors stationed there? Are the components made being inspected on a regular basis? Im sure that the engineers that designed these trucks did not expect these kind of problems. So why are so many people experiencing vibration, harmonic noise problems? I just want my 2WD truck to ride smooth like they clam it should.

No, it's the the wrong types of hands assembling component parts and the truck itself.

I see that you are a mechanic...I consider myself to be one also. You might want to check my previous post re: my truck and driveshaft saga...After multiple wasted trips and hours, I ask them to see what they could find out from gm about driveshaft/propshaft problems with the 2014 trucks. The service guy looked at his computer screen and said "looks like there is a replacement propshaft with a new part #"......"I,ll order one and give you a call". Well they put it in and NO CHANGE. I was so disgusted with the whole ordeal (nine visits to the "service" dept and no help. Everyone "sorry to say me too" ruled out the driveshaft after that. Friday I set up a makeshift dial indicator and confirmed the wheels and or axles (Mexican) were turning very nice with no excessive runout. With the truck on stands tires 2" off the ground, both tires turning at 6mph I rolled under the truck and as I said before Ray Charles could see the wobble at the rear of the driveshaft. Now I will have to determine if the problem is caused by A. off center shaft yoke. B. Off center pinion gear yoke. C. Or a bad ujoint with the centerlines not correct.

If you have your shaft replaced have them at least put the truck in gear on the hoist (motor running in drive) and do a visual inspection of the existing shaft to check for out of round or wobbleing. This of course does not address the question of driveshaft balance but if either are not correct the results will be "the new opering as designed feeling".

I wish you well. Keep every service repair order. I was naive in the beginning and let them tell me "Oh we will keep this order open till do this or that". If I Knew then what I Know now I would have made sure my coplaints were spelled out each time on each trip....

As said before, These trucks are made up of so many defective inferior parts assembled by untrained uncaring people and serviced by parts changers, not MECHANICS WITH DIANOSTIC SKILLS. And GM customer "service". They are wearing done the victims and cutting the companys losses. "WE ARE INFERIOR GRADE".

It's not just the trucks assembled in Mexico that are having these issues, the trucks assembled in Indiana are having the same issues.

Edit: the same people that get upset about GM assembling the trucks in Mexico still continue to purchase GM products, why, if you are so upset with it?

Don't blame the Mexican workers they are just trying to make a living. They only install the parts that GM gives them to install, so why blame them?

They torque the nuts and bolts to the torque specs given to them.

GMs biggest problem is lack of effective quality control procedures, or quality control personnel not doing their job.

 

Edit: and if it's not quality controls fault then it must be management saying "send the vehicles anyway and we'll deal with the fall out later".

So I took my truck in last week to have the vibration and other issues looked at. Got it back - no vibration! How you may ask? They set my tire pressure from 32 to 29.

I wonder if your issue has something to do with the front hubs?

    • Replace the fuel pump with an OEM AC-Delco.
    • Hello, first time posting here. I have an 03 Chevy 1500HD with the 6 liter gas engine. The truck ran fine until the fuel pump died on me and had to get it towed. Replaced the fuel pump with a precision pump from O’rileys and changed the fuel filter while I was there. The truck will run and drive now but it wants to idle around 500 rpm when in drive and it tries to stall if you touch the gas. It drives fine though, just doesn’t want to idle. Put a fuel pressure gauge on the rail and only have 50 psi. I guess these trucks should have 55-62 psi to run right. I thought the regulator might be the issue because when I would unplug the vacuum hose it jumped to 56 psi. Replaced the regulator and no change. The only thing I can think of is that I was sold a faulty fuel pump. Any help would be appreciated because I’d rather not have to take the bed off again if I don’t have too. Thank you!
    • I've been wrenching on GM trucks for 17 years. And I need to get something off my chest because it's been weighing on me for a long time. After all that time, all those motors, all those people standing in my bay, I've figured out there are really only two kinds of owners. The ones who already know about this. And the ones who are about to find out the hard way. A guy came into my shop a few weeks back in a 2018 Silverado 5.3. Sharp guy, maybe 35. Knew his truck cold. He'd been on the forums, read the threads, done his homework. He only rolled in so I could double-check a little module he'd already plugged in himself. Wanted a second set of eyes on it. Ten minutes, in and out, drove off happy. Two days later, a completely different story walked through the same door. Older fella this time, in a 2016 Sierra. Gorgeous truck, clearly babied, not a scratch on it. Wedding ring. Looked like a guy who took care of his stuff. He was in because his engine had started knocking on the way to work. And by the time I got the valve cover off, I already knew it was too late. Lifter collapsed. Cylinder 5. Camshaft chewed up. The whole top end shot. Same kind of truck. Same motor. Same roads, probably the same dealer. The only thing separating those two men was information. I've been at this since 2008, and I've worked on everything GM puts out. Silverados. Sierras. Tahoes. Yukons. Suburbans. Escalades. The 5.3 and the 6.2. Doesn't matter which badge is on the tailgate. They all carry the same problem. So here's the information one of those guys had and the other one didn't. It's called Active Fuel Management. AFM. GM started building it into their V6s and V8s back in 2007 to squeeze out a little better mileage on the highway. Maybe a mile or two a gallon. All to hit government fuel economy numbers. The way it works, the motor quietly shuts down half its cylinders when you're just cruising along. And the little lifters that pull that off have a tiny pin inside them that's constantly clicking in and out. Lock, unlock, lock, unlock. Hundreds of times a drive. Thousands of times a week. Eventually one of those pins wears through. The lifter drops. And it starts grinding the camshaft down like a chisel on butter. And what nobody tells you is that the shudder you feel around 40 or 50 mph? That's the system cycling. Every single time. Here's what really gets me. The pre-2007 trucks, the ones without AFM, they're bulletproof. I've got customers still daily driving them with 260,000 miles on the odometer. Not a problem in the world. GM took a perfectly good motor that would have lasted a lifetime and bolted this system onto it. And it is wrecking engines that should have run forever. The guys who hang around the forums already know all of this. So do the techs. They handled this years ago. They didn't sit around waiting for the dealership to mail them a warning letter, because that letter is never coming. It's the guys who figured somebody would've told them who end up on my lift. And I want to be clear, because this part matters. Maintenance has nothing to do with it. I've torn down motors with barely 30,000 miles on the clock. I pulled apart a Tahoe last summer with 24,000 on it. Practically a brand new truck. Owner had it less than a year. Spotless oil. Best synthetic money can buy, changed early every time. Made no difference. I've seen guys with full dealer records, every interval stamped. Made no difference. The oil changes were never the problem. The pin was. And no amount of babying that truck stops that pin from cycling every single time you drive. That's the part that eats at me. These are good motors. Take the AFM out of the equation and a 5.3 or a 6.2 will run 300,000 miles and never blink. So a few years ago I started telling every single owner who comes through my doors the exact same thing the smart guys already knew. Get yourself a FullForce disabler. It plugs right into the port under your dash. Couple of seconds and you're done. It just tells the computer to leave every cylinder running, full time. No more cycling. No more beating those lifters back and forth every time you turn the key. It doesn't reprogram anything. Doesn't touch your tune. And unplug it before a dealer visit and there's absolutely zero trace it was ever installed. I've had customers come back at 40,000, 60,000, 80,000 miles after I put one in. Zero issues. The trucks run smoother. And the lifters aren't getting beaten to death every single drive. I won't sit here and tell you it's magic. A lifter that's already damaged is a lifter that's already damaged, and this won't un-ring that bell. But it takes away the one thing causing all that wear in the first place. That's the whole game. You don't need a five-thousand-dollar delete. You don't need an expensive tune. You don't need to tear anything apart. You just need to stop the cycling. I'm not writing this for any company. I'm writing it because I'm tired of watching the guys who didn't know pay four and five figures for it. I'm tired of being the guy who has to break the news. I'm tired of knowing that the guys who did know fixed the whole thing for the price of a tank of gas, and the only difference was that somebody told them first. If you drive a Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, or Escalade from 2007 or newer with a V6 or V8, you've got AFM. You've got those lifters, and they're cycling every single time you drive. So be the guy who already knew. Not the one I'm scraping metal out of next month. EDIT: A bunch of folks asked, so here it is. The one I put my faith in is FullForce.     • Thanks for following along. I'm not author material, my tenses are all over the place and an editor would have a heck of a time cleaning up after me. Reading and writing is still a fun pastime though.   My new scanner came in yesterday, wow, where the heck has this thing been?! It connects right up to the Blazer, there's all kinds of bidirectional tests like EGR activation and percentage, toggle the fuel pump relay, EVAP purge valve, IAC control, AC relay, reset the transmission's adaptive learning, toggle shift solenoids and TCC lockup, and I can reset fuel trims with the click of a button...all things I could have used over the last 60 days!   It's also telling me there is a stored code in the ABS module for front left wheel sensor open and something about the brake switch. The ABS dash light works. It illuminates normally during the self-test at key on/ start and that's it. I cleared the codes and will see if they set when I take it out later. That, and I'm going to get (hopefully) real data on timing and cam ******. The PID's are there.   I connected the tool to my truck...holy smokes. Newer vehicles make early OBDII vehicles look like 8-bit, pixelated, early Nintendo stuff. This? This is like wearing 3D virtual reality goggles playing one of those elaborate, cinematic video games with seasons and plots in comparison. There are SO MANY modules and SO MANY tests and SO MUCH data. There's a scanner sequence for filling the coolant...   End of the day, it's a tool with way more power than I need, but the versatility to do old and new is there (and I need an adapter to connect it to my OBDI Camaro). It will allow me to do the first pass of diagnosis when out-of-warranty vehicles need help, and it will enable more DIY maintenance like brake system bleeding, ABS bleed, etc. I probably over-bought here, but, mission is accomplished.   Enjoy your Sunday...I need to shut this machine down and go get ready for the week ahead.
