Just to throw this out there. I am not one of these you will void your warranty guys, I have tuned everything I have owned and have a tune written waiting to install on this one when the time comes. I was talking to the service guy at the dealership yesterday about my gear install, not even discussing re-calibration or tuning, and he told me whatever I do do not put a tuner on this truck to correct for the gears. He said he has a 14 6.2 in the shop right now that had an engine knock. GM made him pull the cal file and send in for evaluation. The truck was tuned and he had to cancel the guys warranty. Stuck with a 55K truck with a busted engine and a 13K bill if he wants them to repair it. The guy initially denied it but he eventually admitted that he had tuned it. This is just hearsay so take it for what it is. I still plan on tuning mine but it will be a little later down the road once more reports come in on how they hold up. He informed me that DSI, the company that does their lift installs, can re-calibrate it and it will still be covered under GM warranty.

 

^^^^This post could have been posted by me^^^^, I would love to tune all your guys trucks because it is something I like to do, I just like to make sure that everyone is aware of the consequence's before I do tune. I have a full time job and don't need your tune to pay my light bill this month, or I would say "GM will never know" like most other tuners out there. As soon as I'm comfortable with my truck and feel its time, I will tune mine. I have only had my truck 6 weeks and have 9k miles on it so its not like my warranty is going to last long anyway.

 

On another note.... You will love your truck all over again if you get a good tune from a reputable tuner. I advise putting all your mods on first and just getting a full dyno tune. You will not be disappointed and if he is a good tuner, it will only increase the life of your drive train unless of course the new power can't keep you off the skinny pedal.

There has to be at least a 1000 web pages of people talking about how these chips are a farce. I would suggest returning that "chip" back to where you got it from unless you are wanting to possibly damage your engine.

 

As said they tell the ECM that the incoming temp is 20ish degree to try and get the ECM into the richer part of the stock calibration. This is exactly the wrong way to do it, if you want to pick up power get a real tune otherwise just drive your truck.

since i no absolutely nothing about them

is it possible to tune a 5.3 to make more of the torque in the lower rev range for towing etc.

Yes, that's the nice thing about VVT. You won't get 6.2 torque but it will get better

Custom Dyno tune... From a reputable tuner

Sorry, not familiar with any tuners that far North. I would reach out to local area car forums or friends and see who they recommend in your area. If you don't find a dyno shop to give you a good torque tune then you are at the mercy of mail order. Although I have used neither BlackBear or Diablew (diablo custom tuner) I have heard a lot of good things about both of them. They may be able to give you what you want remotely, it would be worth the call to both just to see what they offer.

Custom tune is the way to go. EFI live or HP tuners

 

Your constant harassment has caused me to break down and tune mine. If I get a little free time this weekend, I will have something to report back with next week. I actually already have a base tune built with DOD modifications, shift improvements, torque management reduced about 50% and WOT tables cleaned up a bit, but I will need to dial in my VE for all cam positions and recalibrate the MAF before messing with the timing. After all that is done... I'm fairly confident this little 5.3 will be a beast in comparison to the stock calibrations.

 

Now I just need to get to the exhaust shop and get an O2bung welded in for my Wideband.

Lmao. Glad your doing the tune. DI 5.3 respond well with tunes. Glad you came to the light. What wideband you going with?

I have a little F.A.S.T. Dual Wideband kit that I use when Dyno tuning. I'll put it in and make it semi-permanent for a couple weeks while I dial in the VE, Maf and PE tables.

It's done, no sitting on the fence about tuning, I couldn't take it anymore.

By simply lowering TQ management 50%, shorten shift times by 20%, raising shift pressures 10%, cleaning up PE tables (WOT) to give a target AFR of 12.7, bumped timing up 3* on gas and 5* on alcohol in WOT it's a new truck.

 

Truck has 5.3 with 3.08 and will bark second, if for some reason it didn't spin through first and second. From a 15MPH roll I can shred the tires. To be fair it is winter and the roads aren't the cleanest but it's still night and day from stock.

 

I will be dialing it in for a couple weeks in stock trim to see what kind of gains I can make. When I'm happy with my tune I will take it to the Dyno and post "stock vs street tune vs Dyno tune" numbers just like I do all my projects.

Congrats! It is going to be really hard not to install my tune once the gears are done. Might as well just say the hell with it and join the club. Curious to see the results once you get it dialed in. Looking forward to more feedback.

I will keep you guys posted, and welcome any local guys to the dyno when I go, that will give me a couple extra gear heads to mash the skinny pedal for me while I watch what's going on.

    • I will admit I haven't experimented much with pressure drops beyond the numbers I put in and part of that is that the numbers I used are fairly low and then found out it would trigger regardless at that 35 psi. Having said that I had tried before had changed the placard pressures and being that I have a 1 ton set to 80 on the placard for the rear I believe it triggered close to 60, the front I don't recall now for sure but thought maybe it could get close to 45 from that factory 60 placard pressure. So I never did figure out if it was a number of psi from placard pressure to the alarm or a percentage of the total placard number as some figured it was like a 25% drop from placard pressure would trigger it. So as to try and answer your question, I believe I set the placard pressure on the front to 47 or so and while I run the front tires at 40, they have dipped below that some if its colder and I haven't put "winter air" in yet and never once have had the front alarm go off. I would say that the answer your looking for is no, that if you set your placard pressure to 45, you have a certain amount of room to drop below that pressure before the alarm will go off.    The pressures you decide to run in your truck, that ends up being what makes sense to you based on what your carrying in your truck or if towing, then have to bump them back up to something that will carry the load in the rear and the fronts typically left at the same pressure. It all comes down to that chart I put the link to and using an accurate roadside scale to be your guide, both unloaded and then loaded to know your minimum safe pressures.    I just wish GM would allow a person to change the readings for the tire pressures to the English system of pounds as I have to look at that goofy metric reading that will never ever jive in my head and will go over and change it just to figure out what they are if need be and then change it back. 
    • That part I understand, that the dealer can do it. But I'm not understanding why updates that were available to the truck since it left the factory, or the dealership originally, would not still be available to it without dealer intervention.   I'm thinking along the lines of recalls. They stay available until they are completed, regardless of whether they are in warranty or not, or in the hands of the original owner or not. Why not updates as well, especially since some of those can be safety related also?
    • That's good to know, but I don't think I'll even be running them under 45 in the rear  unless it's on the sand or something but will only be for a short distance anyways!    I didn't read all the instructions in the booklet yet, but do you know let's say I set the rear psi on the placard to 45, will the warning light come on soon as it drops under 45 or is there a percentage it has to drop from the set value before the warning light is triggered?
    • That's bad.  Like, its probably destroying the stub axle the CV slides into.   Do you have a proper lift installed with differential lowering brackets?  Did you install AT4/Trail Boss factory CV axles?
