2016 Silverado buyer vibration?

Hi all, new member to the forum here. Hope I can get some input on the new 2016 silverados from you all. Here's my situation. I am relocating to texas for a new job in august. I am thinking of picking up a new 2016 chevy silverado 1500 before i leave as a want something reliable that i don't have to worry about once im in a different state. This is a big purchase for me and im thinking of either the double or crew cab with a v6. doesn't have to be 4 wheel drive but if i can get a good deal then i will pick it up. I've only needed 4 wheel drive in a couple situations before.

 

my current chevy has not let me down besides a few times with minor and easy fixes. it is a 1998 silverado 1500 that i use to tow the boat on weekends. No major problems with it. i drive a sedan when im not towing anything.

 

from everything that i've read the vibration issues on chevy is a BIG problem and GM still doesnt have any fixes. it seems like a huge headache and one that i don't want to deal with. I have read A LOT about the 2014/2015s but haven't heard too much about the vibration issues with 2016 models.

 

My question is; does the 2016 have the same problem as 2014 and 2015s? also what other problems keep arising? and is it major or minor problems? i think now there should be enough people with 2016s to hopefully answer my question. Ive been driving chevys my whole life and the thought of geting a f150 doesn't sit well with me haha. but if i have to because of GM's problems i will even though i really want a silverado.

I think the vibration issue seems more than it actually is. I've driven a few 2014-15 models (including my own) and have not experienced any vibration issues.

On a forum with only a few hundred that stay active it will seem like a huge problem. But, if it is giving someone trouble the first thing they will do is look it up on the internet and might join a forum like this one. But in reality, there's over a million of these K2 platform trucks out on the road so the problem childs and the ones with vibrations is a fraction of 1%. I will of course admit that it's still too big of a problem to be coincidence so GM needs to try to figure it out. My point is just that it seems like way more of a problem on a forum. Also from what I've read the causes are all over the place and so is the cab and bed configurations that do have the vibrations. I think that's why GM can't do a fix because it's different fixes. Some lucked out and was just a set of tires and/or rims. Also all makes will have problems and recalls. Just shop around and figure out which one you like bet. It's easy to see the threads with problems, but look up threads that have positive things about these trucks and you'll see that most people on here are completely happy with their truck. I've had my '14 for right at 2 years and has over 24,000 miles on it and all has been trouble free.

 

By the way, I also came from a '98 Z71 and it was a huge jump. But, I tend to make huge jumps. The truck I had before the '98 was an '86 Chevy C10 that didn't even have factory A/C at all.

Thanks for the reply! Ya i understand what you mean about the small percentage but i feel that if im shedding out 30-40k i shouldn't even have a small percentage change to have problems. I never buy brand new and usually i go to auctions. but i will test drive a couple silverado's before possibly heading to ford and seeing which one i like better and which has the better deal. Thanks for the reply. I just don't want to be the one with bad luck (which i prob would haha) to get a bad silverado. Im curious to see if i will feel it in any of the test drives if im unlucky enough to get one. but i will test drive a couple before i make a decision. Thanks again for your input!

Like I said, it's still a problem. I was just making sure you realized that you can go by forums on how good or bad a vehicle is since I highly doubt all K2 owners are on here. IT seems like most people that get the vibrations either get it a little down the road (so not right off the bat so can't know during a test drive) or if they didn't test drive on a highway or interstate if it did vibrate since day 1. I did a pretty short test drive, but I did get on the highway and interstate for a short bit. Luckily my town is right on I-95 and has 2 exits so I just went from one exit to the other and took the highway back to town for a couple miles. I remember someone posting that they're worried they will get a vibration because they're shopping for a new truck like you, but I told him that you can't be scared of what it MIGHT do. I understand the frustration if someone pays good money for a truck and then it vibrates. I just mean you can't worry about what could happen. Just get the truck you want and enjoy it and just don't think about problems unless they do come up.

 

This was also my first truck. I always said I wouldn't buy brand new because of the value dropping instantly after driving off the lot. But, now it's only been 2 years and the truck is worth the same as what I owe on the loan. Plus I got the Gap insurance to cover me if the truck got totaled while owing more than it's worth. also it's great that you don't worry about what someone else might have done before you got it as in cheap fixes. All I can say is that I feel sorry for the poor soul that got my '98 because of how I treated it. I maintained it, I just drove the hell out of it lol.

Mine shakes between 50-60 mph. BTW the V6 does not get any better fuel mileage if your concerned about that kind of stuff and resale will be better with a V8.

I would recommend taking it out and kicking down the transmission. Get moving 15-20 mph and push the gas down to about half way and see what it does. I have a 2015 and it usually does about a 2 second delay then downshift then downshift again. Other times it will downshift once immediately. Still other times it will slow down, then downshift with a large clunk. No vibration for me though.

Test drove a 2016 last weekend searching for anything wrong & it was very solid. No issues & no vibrations. Zero issues with my 2013(old body style), but there were complaints as well about tires on that as well. Do you due diligence looking a vehicle over before signing any paperwork on any brand/make etc. Crawl over the thing, drive it all speeds & you should be fine.

OP, the vibration is not a big problem, it is actually quite small. Of ours or any others I know of or met and asked, not one has had the problem. There is no point in worrying about something that most likely won't happen, you are talking single digit to decimal percentage points of the vibration happening to your truck.

 

Second, softail is incorrect. It does get better mpg in most situations. Shoot car and driver averaged 3 mpg better with the v6 vs the v8 in their test (13 observed vs 16 observed). With E85 it was a tenth of a second quicker in the 1/4 than the 07 6.0 vortec max they tested. Good little motor. It will have a higher resale but you also pay more up front so...

 

Could go F150 but then you take a chance on their ecoboost motors which have had some questionable marks about them, as well as other areas.

Honestly all makes will have rogue problems and the voices will be loudest on the forums. There is a warranty if something happens so go enjoy the truck, don't listen to forums for feedback usually.

The vibration issue is blown way out of proportion. It most likely less than 1% of trucks that have it like someone else mentioned.

 

Don't forget other manufacturers have issues with there trucks as well. I remember reading that the new F150 collision braking system would freak out around tanker trucks and apply the brakes suddenly. Also, Ecoboost.

 

My buddy has a 2014 Tacoma that has had a constant clunk from the front since he bought it. He found out a week ago that the frame is bent and Toyota stripped something when they tried to fix it.

 

They all have their issues.

umm... the vibration issue is more than 1% of trucks. The issue is that people are not experiencing it until you put a couple thousand miles on the truck. There is a huge forum right now going over buybacks, and how GM is not doing anything to fix the issue. You're taking a chance when you buy these trucks - within 5, 10, or 15k miles you could have a truck that shakes like hell. As for other manufacturers, sure they have issues, but non as ****ing annoying or bad as a constant highway vibration.

I do think the vibration issue isntnas badbas some make it out. Saying the though, my truck, my brothers, and a coworkers all have the issue and have been to the dealership for several unsucessful attempts to fix it.

    • He is not saying that an SAE *W20 will have more viscosity than a *W40 due to MORE VII polymers. He is saying that although multiple *W40 may post in the PDS the same or similar 100 C and 150 C viscosities that the blenders choice of modifier TYPE and AMOUNT to get his chosen base to grade will not give identical real world viscosities in shear and at temperature. All will pass the SII test but not all will pass the 100 C HTHS (unpublished value) testing the blender does and relies on to get the required by law "percentage improvement' referenced to his last great work.    Tis the problem with the lie. Once told others are required to support it. 
    • I have a `25, 1500 that auto sets on incline. Never knew that at first. I have the electronic shifter. Just think if it didn`t do that? Unlike a mechanical shift that you can muscle out of park, how would you get this thing out? That would be a problem.   What I found out later is, I don`t have to push the button to release. Just put it in gear.   Setting parameters? Don`t know if it`s possible.

I usually set the parking brake (habit) when on flat ground for typical driving.    When backed down on the launch ramp to launch the boat and I place gear selector into Park, the parking brake activates automatically. My second nature is to set parking brake manually and noticed I was turing the parking brake off.  The parking brake appears to be setting itself automatically.   I looked all over my owner's manual and only found references to being on an incline and manually setting parking brake, or at times parking brake will be auto engaged, but nothing specific to my situation.    When is the parking brake automatically engaged?  Under what specific circumstances?  Can the auto set parameters be changed?     I like the auto set feature.  It would be nice if always engaged when shifted into Park and released when shifted out of Park (like my wifes 2025 RAV4).   Thanks!

Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
    • Can it still be Assembled II?   Viscosity on the decline by various means. Heat on the rise making that worse. Engine RPM in the tank. Smaller motors with more boost trying to emulate an electric motor. Full torque, zero rpm. Then we will triple the OCI. Argh.    But wait....there is more. LSPI has pushed a shift from Ca to Mg and as that cost more PLUS the run to lower sulfur compounds the TBN is moving in the wrong direction for the increased OCI's demanded.    That not being enough to placate a demand for a parameter they can't measure the other sulfur bearing compounds are also under attack. That would be zinc and phosphorus sulfonate compounds. To some degree those are being replaced with boron esters and others, i.e. titanium ect. All of which have shorter service lives. And there there is the "Secrete Sauce" marketing for AW adds that 'Can't be detected by UOA's" but trust me because I (the blenders) never ever lie.    Spoiler alert; ALL additives are sacrificial! Smaller amounts of the old blended with less robust versions of the new do not equal longer service lives. So what are the blenders recommending? Wait for it.......   MOVING THE GOAL POSTS! OMG      Let's declare the long standing TAN/TBN crossover irrelevant and tell people that soot is a great 'graphite' based lubricant which can aid tribo films. Wait, what? Let's declare that the standards used for oxidation and nitration were to conservative and can be expanded. Let's tell them that because GDI fuel dilution, although being a VISCOSITY KILLER and an acid generator is actually okay because we have better base oils that limit viscosity failure limits. (Said knowing this is measured in fractions of a centipoise and in bases not commonly used in shelf oils)   Lying from the heart is not just the new normal but we have a public, a very young public, that is so ignorant of the facts and so sure of their "RESEARCH" into AI driven models base in regurgitated  instead of scientific research based unvarnished, peer reviewed FACTS that the incoming guard is loosing their grip on reality and the OEM's are tickled pink while the blends bend the knee.    You have an ever limited set of tools to work with. And sooner or later those will be taken from you as the API and the EPA strangle the last remaining fluids from the system. What you have left is your wits. If you care to use them.    At some point in the very near future it will not longer be possible to do "What is best for the machine", and be replaced with "The best you have access too". You WILL be rewarded with half the life and twice the cost. That isn't that hard to predict.
