I, too am surprised at the lack of participation from headers owners. Maybe there are less people with headers than we have imagined.

This site isn’t as dedicated to performance as others. Most folks on here are concerned with leveling kits, ride quality, and towing. Few folks have some wild rides on here but not many.

Go to the performancetrucks.net forum and you'll get many members there that have a lot of experience in this area.

Gears...gears...gears... get gears! And a new driveshaft. ~$2500-$3000 installed for a 4x4. Your truck will be stupid quick. I’ve got a 5.3 with 4.56 gears and a new driveshaft for good measure. It’s silly how much of a difference there is. No other mod in this price range will come anywhere close to the performance gains of gears.

Gears are always a great mod but it’s an invasive install and not easily reversed for whatever reason. I’m a huge fan though. Better acceleration, better towing, easier on the transmission, easier on the engine, and when going with bigger tires they bring things back to at least factory range or better.

Gearing change is probably the easiest weekend mod to do. If you have the tools. You can get almost as much seat of the pants feel as a super charger. Much easier than changing headers and exhaust.

I’d disagree with that. Unless these trucks are different, there is a lot of knowledge required that goes into setting the gears up to make sure they last a long time and don’t make any noise. I know folks have done them but it’s not that easy. I’d recommend having a shop do it.

One of the first things I learned was gear swapping, pretty straight forward. Especially with the internet. Ford nine inch was really simple. If a person cant learn gear swapping I wouldn’t try anything else.

Guess we'll have to agree to disagree.  I've rebuilt engines and transfer cases, done suspension lifts and drops, and am currently building a 77 bronco from scratch with a fiberglass body, and I still won't touch a gear set.

So you would tackle an engine rebuild and not a rear end re-gear interesting.

I would have to agree with Centex14 setting preload, pinion depth, rolling drag, and backlash are a little more in-depth than replacing parts in an engine, which is all an overhaul is.

Im going to give you a brand no one mentions because they are a newer company compared to the old standards. Speed Engineering out of California makes great exhaust products for GM vehicles. I have their headers and true duals for my Camaro and they are pretty good for the cost. They are stainless steel and the fitment was great.

Side note, I think most people here don't get headers or do major mods because of the factory warranty. I for one don't want to do any major mods until my warranty is up. When that happens I'm going to go with speed engineering headers.

I was just going to suggest speed engineering also.  Good stuff for little money.  The guys over at Performance trucks have good luck with them.

Looking at them shortly. On of the things that is becoming apparent with a lot of the cheaper brands. That price is just for the headers, once you add in the Y pipe and cats or crossover pipe and cats the bargain price is eaten up and they are about the same in cost as the premier brands.

Speed Engineering sells a whole true dual exhaust, Headers to tail pipe for $750-$1000 depending what options you get

Well, the Speed Engineering headers certainly are cheaper, # 25-1037 retail for $289.00

I have not seen their catted  collector piping yet. I'm looking into their packages now.

*Edit - I cant find anything about catalytic converters or their piping on the Speed Engineering site.

Anybody???

I don't think they sell a catted option.  They say you can use their headers with any aftermarket header Y pipe, But I've also read where some don't fit.
