 You might get a better answer in the 1500 truck section. That said; the 03 is a drive by cable I believe, and the 08 is drive by wire. You would at least need to change the intake/induction system.

the 2008 will have AFM and the 2003 will not. If looking for a replacement without AFM you could look for an engine out of an express van, it will not have AFM and will be the same serious of engine. If only looking to use the block you could make it work.

Simple answer is no.  You will never make a Gen 3 engine work in a Gen IV platform without doing so much to the engine it's not worth installing.  Find another Gen IV ( 07 GMT900 through 09 to avoid the VVT your 08 doesn't have that came along in 2010).  Done.

Drive by wire, transfer your throttle to the replacement.

Send the ecu out for programming for something like an 04 which was wire and pre AFM and VVT

We are still talking two completely different generations of engines here.

 

The GEN 3 engine from 99-07 was both cable and drive by wire but now we get deep one why this swap is stupid and a waste of money. The GEN 3 engine is a 24x crank trigger where as the GEN 4 (07.5+) are 58x. The camshaft trigger is a 1x on the GEN 3 and 4x on the GEN 4.

 

The camshaft sensor on the front cover of the GEN 4 and not in the rear of the engine like the GEN 3. The knock sensors are in the valley under the intake of the GEN 3 and the GEN 4 has them bolted to the side of the block on each side just above the oil pan.

 

 

So to make this work it would involve tons of work with swapping parts over. Drilling and taping the block for the knock sensors. Having to take the crank to a machine shop to swap reluctors. Buying a new 3 bolt 4x cam gear and other stupid stuff that just costs more and more money.

 

At this point you could have bought the correct engine or just rebuilt/fixed the engine in the truck and been further ahead.

 

Last point, the 1999-2002 trucks use a P01 computer. 2003-2007's use a P59 computer. 2007.5+ use a E38 computer with the newer CAN-BUS systems. You can not program a newer computer to run an older generation calibration.

 

So yep, nope.

It's all the same. The E85 stuff is just a sensor and programming, the long block itself will swap over no problems.

2003 is a gen 1 and 2008 is a gen 3 so no as it would require rewiring and custom programming stay with the same engine in your truck now for simplicity and no headaches, i would suggest a GM crate engine from GM. 

.

GM Performance crate engines are covered under the provisions of the GM Dealer Service Parts and Accessories Warranty for 24 months from the original sale or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Right, you can swap it but the only way to do it is to use the 2003's wiring harness and computer. It's easy to make the older computer a standalone system. The downfall is that you won't have gauges, possible ABS and traction control faults and maybe AC control.

I have a question so I swapped a 5.3 LT to a 2003 ls truck that had a 5.3 ls that I swapped because it was locked up and once I swapped it to the 2003 ls it cranks but won’t start up sometimes we’ll start up then shut off right away and also my guages will stop working and also in when turning on the ignition and only the engine light stays on any help I can get?

    • I'm looking at carpal tunnel surgery on my left hand and lumbar fusion. 
    • While waiting for parts I have been working on installing the AC compressor, new accumulator, and orifice tube. Also changed out the high side ball valve (original). The orifice tube that was in there wasn't too bad. Slightly dirty, a little bit of junk, but not blocked. Glad I changed it out.   The accumulator, which should have been a 5 minute job, may have just burned $50. Put some PAG in it, wrote the date and mileage on the side, fresh o-rings and gooey'd up the threads and rings with Nylog. Got everything connected and snugged and was going to vacuum down the system, and....   My manifold gauge won't fit on the port. It's not an R12 service port. It LOOKS like an R134 service port but the diameter is a hair too large. There's a sticker on the accumulator that says it's designed to be used with R12 and R134a systems only. So it's not R1234yf. Even if I reduced the diameter slightly with a file, the shoulder on the port is too large so the quick-connect valve won't lock on. I'm stumped. It's going back, and 50/50 on if they'll give me a refund.   Also, I did a fuel pressure test.... Key on, the gauge spikes to about 60psi and quickly bleeds off, like 2psi per second. The fuel isn't going into the plenum, no smell, starts fine, so I'm guessing there's a bad check valve in the pump and the fuel is just draining back into the tank. oh, hell. But, it shouldn't be a problem, pump primes just fine and the truck starts right up. It just means I can't really ever use fuel pressure to verify a leak at the injector or intake.
    • Got this yesterday out of nowhere. Truck is a 25',6.6 gasser with 8k miles.  Only semi anomaly is that the truck had been sitting, uncranked for 6 days. Elec Stability Control showed immediately upon cranking, not while driving. No drivability issues, just the message. Battery didn't seem to be weak when cranking over.  I drove it, killed it, let it sit a few hrs with no avail.  Truck is 100% stock. No damage. 
    • This can be done.  It is not cheap and requires an instrument cluster swap with custom programming, new steering wheel with the controls on it, and a special jumper harness.   The cluster upgrade - 12.3” Digital Cluster Upgrade – 2022.5–2026 Silverado / Sierra (T1 Refresh Pickup) - WAMS   The wheel upgrade - Steering Wheel Upgrade Kit – 2022.5–2026 Silverado / Sierra (T1 Refresh Pickup) - WAMS   The column harness upgrade - 2019 - 2026 Silverado / Sierra: Steering Wheel LIN Bus Harness - Harness Dr. - DIY Done Right     The problem with doing all of this?  You pretty much can't have any programming done to your truck that involves the cluster ever again.  The dealer won't be able to program the cluster as GM's system will only pull data for the cluster the truck came with.  So it would be advised also to turn off over the air updates.   TLDR;  Should have bought an LT double cab?  You'd have a power seat, the wheel controls, the cluster, all things that you've been seeking in your various posts so far about your new WT regular cab.
