According to that article, GM should be using that crap starting in '13 .... so what's the verdict, guys? Anyone check the label under the hood on the '14?

 

 

Wow big difference in the front end - definitely an improvement. Looks like the high beam is an inch or so higher than it used to be - wonder if that makes a difference in lighting at all, or if it's solely cosmetic? Speaking of that - anyone know if they run the same bulbs? H11 low / 9005 high?

Everything I've read recently says its only some EU nations using the stuff. Apparently France is trying to halt the importation of Audis (I think, I know its a German brand) because they refuse to use the new stuff cause it emits hydrogen fluoride as it burns. Apparently the stuff can eat through glass.

The mandate that I read in one of the articles linked was for EU 2013 revised or new models by 2017? May have to go back a read it again. But, tree huggers none the less believe it is for the better good. Because global scamming errrr warming is far more the issue than someones car igniting while the driver is inside.

Sounds like a great refrigerant! It's pretty clear governments care more about the "environment" than our lives ...

 

Hopefully the automakers will refuse to install this stuff if mandated. Someone needs to put their foot down. Should've never got rid of R12 ....

Yes those are the correct bulbs for the Silverado headlights...

GM started using the "new" refrigerant in 1994, 20 years ago. Bugs are worked out by now. Front AC cools fine but there is no rear AC in the 2014s. Very hot to ride in the back of a 2014 GM truck. With the lack of rear AC and decontented rear entertainment system for 2014, these trucks were not designed for family use at all. We will see if these issues get addressed in the new upper trim levels coming out later this year. The LTZ just does not bring much to the table in the form of high end trucks.

 

I've only got front A/C in my '11, no rear vents. It's really not that much of a problem. I live in the mid-South, so I do get very hot days. The A/C has never been bad on those days. If you like direct cold air blowing on you, then I can see you won't like the rear of the truck. But it does cool down nicely. I'm amazed at how well this A/C cools the truck, front and back. I can't imagine anything newer would be worse?

So we tested the rear air issue this morning.

 

There are still under-seat vents for the rear, so heat wouldn't be an issue. You can use them to direct cold air too, in a pinch.

 

The entire front air system is powerful. It moves an impressive amount of air around. With the front vents pointed correctly you can get a strong breeze to the back seats. The entire cabin isn't really that big and cools down pretty quickly.

 

That said, we'd prefer to have a set of vents for the rear. Other brands have rear vents in their trucks, so GM should consider adding it as soon as possible.

 

We waved good-bye to the Silverado a couple hours ago. More photos and comments coming soon.

Yes, that is correct.

 

Edit: But only when manually selected to do so.

I've been in the back of a 900-series crew cab 3500HD on a few hot days here, upper 90s and not even full bore the cab was extremely cold so I think the lack of vents is just something for the keyboard commandos to whine about.
