First off, I have not read this entire thread. But I think I read somewhere that the door is designed to not fully close and it is to remain slightly open intentionally from the factory. I am not certain what their reason is for doing this, but... because I am a commercial/ industrial HVAC & Refrigeration technician by trade for many years, the first reason that comes to my mind is, it is left slightly open intentionally because of a possible buildup of Co2 in the cabin. Co2 buildup can make you sleepy and that's not good if your driving a automobile. Most commercial Rooftop units, and room ventilators have a minimum of 10% fresh air that's always entering the airstream because of this. No matter the season of the year. This is especially true for offices and student classrooms , and those types of environments can be bringing in up to 15-25% fresh air into the main air stream at all times.

Bingo!

They build in a safety margin to allow enough air in to the cabin to protect occupants from build up of harmful gases.

You should have read the thread. 

 

Recirc door closes 90% instead of 100% because of excess dust intrusion from a negative pressure inside the cabin. Has absolutely nothing to do with starving the driver of air. It used to close at 100% and then the BCM programming was changed in 2014 after people complained too much of excessive dust intruding into the cab. 

 

My 2018 2500HD LTZ does this behavior... It is nothing other than POOR ENGINEERING on GM's part. I'm not even going to bother continue trying to prove this point because I think it's been proven. No other cars being sold today have recirc. functions so poor that it does nothing to block odors like these K2 trucks. 

 

Otherwise loving the truck... But **** this is annoying with how many people smoke in my city while driving with their windows open... (Even now in the dead of winter) Don't know why any Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Ford, Dodge, BMW, Mercedes, Infiniti, Lexus, Kia, or Hyundai don't have this problem, but these K2 trucks do... Poor software engineering? If there's ANY concern of suffocation, then why can't the door close 100% for the first like 10 minutes after the button is pressed, and then open up to 90% after a certain duration. Not often I'm behind the same smelly vehicle for more than 5 minutes anyway. No one is expecting a Tesla-like 'Biohazard Mode' here... Just don't want to smell the smelly diesel or the smoker in front...

Same exact problem with a brand new 2018 Silverado 2500 LT.

 

I thought the recirc was broken.  I got behind a garbage truck spewing diesel fumes.  I saw it 1/4 mile away and popped on recirc.  As I got closer the fumes kept increasing.  It was so bad my eyes and throat were burning.  I couldn't exactly roll down the window for fresh air.

 

Just today I saw a restaurant's septic being pumped.  Put on the recirc and sure enough when I parked I still got some of the odor into the cabin.  That is what prompted me to find this conversation.  I guess I won't pursue it with the dealer as no one has made any headway.

 

This is my first GM vehicle in 30 years.  I love my truck except for this.  If other truck makers can eliminate outside outdoors without killing their truck owners, why can't GM?

WHAT THE HECK MAN?!?!  I've got a 2018 Sierra 1500 crew cab short box Z71 SLT Premium Plus and the smell that this truck lets in is UNBELIEVABLE!  I've got tears running down my face as I'm typing this from the fumes and ITS ON RECIRCULATE!  Smh....  I've never experienced this with a vehicle, ever!  It's sad that I'm considering trading this thing for another brand if the service department gives me the runaround.  THIS IS CRAZY!!!

Adding a carbon filter helped my suburban. Gotta buy a new.l one every 6 months though

I bought a 2018 Sierra recently (February) and was so excited as I FINALLY got to buy my truck.  I have been wanting a truck for years, and I finally got it!  Then reality set in.  This issue is absolutely reeking havoc on me.  I have severe allergies, and I am constantly having headaches and issues due to the stupid Recirc door not closing all the way.  GM explained this is a feature and I explained that at 47 years of age they are full of it.  This isn't a feature, it is a hindrance.  Now I have a vehicle that I honestly am considering not driving.  I can't trade it because of the rebates that are currently in place.  I am having constant headaches, from the smell of diesel fuel, the pollen here, the smell of smoke from smokers, the smell of the sewage treatment plant near us that I never knew was even there till I bought the truck, and the lovely smell of skunks and roadkill.  Yeah, I get it it is a truck, not a clean room.  I have never had this issue with ANY vehicle that I have ever owned.  Ever.  NEVER.  There has got to be some way to fix this.  I got the new air filter discussed in the thread and it helps a bit, but not with the allergies.  The worse part is that GM obviously doesn't care in any way shape or form.

Of course they don't care.  You're just 1 person out of millions who drive GM trucks.  They can't cater to each and every individual.  It sucks that you have the health problems, hell most of us have some sort of health issue, but we can't all get a "that's not fair" solution to everything ya know.  I hope you can find a resolution to this issue, short of having to go to another make.  Good luck.

Same here... dealership says recirculate is a 60/40 blend with outside air! Completely unsafe imo

Traded in my 2016 1500 for a 2017 powerwagon. Air recirculation let's in no air!

Hello everyone, I have a 2014 Chevy Silverado, and after taking my truck in for service when it was under the bumper to bumper warranty I basically got the run around answer to my recirculation complaint, and they explained that the system was not air tight, well! I called bullshit on that one and I can prove it, so I have found the answer to most of your complaints, I removed my lower glove box and removed my cabin filter and looked at the recirculation door while I pressed on the recirculation button and guess what? The door does not move and is stuck in the open position which explains why our cars smell all the outside fumes, I checked the recirculation door actuator as well, it moves freely when I removed it from the door, the only possible issue now is it’s a software issue, I really do hate the Chevy service departments and corporate as well, they represent what a shitty company General Motors has become, by the way... I am a service technician and I work for Land Rover and we don’t treat our customers like this

Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
    • Can it still be Assembled II?   Viscosity on the decline by various means. Heat on the rise making that worse. Engine RPM in the tank. Smaller motors with more boost trying to emulate an electric motor. Full torque, zero rpm. Then we will triple the OCI. Argh.    But wait....there is more. LSPI has pushed a shift from Ca to Mg and as that cost more PLUS the run to lower sulfur compounds the TBN is moving in the wrong direction for the increased OCI's demanded.    That not being enough to placate a demand for a parameter they can't measure the other sulfur bearing compounds are also under attack. That would be zinc and phosphorus sulfonate compounds. To some degree those are being replaced with boron esters and others, i.e. titanium ect. All of which have shorter service lives. And there there is the "Secrete Sauce" marketing for AW adds that 'Can't be detected by UOA's" but trust me because I (the blenders) never ever lie.    Spoiler alert; ALL additives are sacrificial! Smaller amounts of the old blended with less robust versions of the new do not equal longer service lives. So what are the blenders recommending? Wait for it.......   MOVING THE GOAL POSTS! OMG      Let's declare the long standing TAN/TBN crossover irrelevant and tell people that soot is a great 'graphite' based lubricant which can aid tribo films. Wait, what? Let's declare that the standards used for oxidation and nitration were to conservative and can be expanded. Let's tell them that because GDI fuel dilution, although being a VISCOSITY KILLER and an acid generator is actually okay because we have better base oils that limit viscosity failure limits. (Said knowing this is measured in fractions of a centipoise and in bases not commonly used in shelf oils)   Lying from the heart is not just the new normal but we have a public, a very young public, that is so ignorant of the facts and so sure of their "RESEARCH" into AI driven models base in regurgitated  instead of scientific research based unvarnished, peer reviewed FACTS that the incoming guard is loosing their grip on reality and the OEM's are tickled pink while the blends bend the knee.    You have an ever limited set of tools to work with. And sooner or later those will be taken from you as the API and the EPA strangle the last remaining fluids from the system. What you have left is your wits. If you care to use them.    At some point in the very near future it will not longer be possible to do "What is best for the machine", and be replaced with "The best you have access too". You WILL be rewarded with half the life and twice the cost. That isn't that hard to predict.         
    • I trust you saw the other comment where he knew what he was talking about !. Yes, these darned newer vehicles with all their so smart they are stupid technology, goes and drains the battery down. As you might see my other comment, I installed a Noco 5 battery tender under the hood and at this point still have the cord routed so I have to lift the hood and then plug it in but am typically parked in a garage or a shed so its not risking the engine hood in the wind. That way I am assured or hopefully so of not finding I have a battery drawn down and can't even start the truck and that also damages the battery to draw it down too far. 
    • I guess no surprise my guesses were wrong !, at least now I know if I ever happen to see it grayed out in my own truck as to what is going on.    I never happened to catch my truck with it grayed out, it seemed every time I would test to see if there was an update it never found anything and yet more than once I would check to see if there was an update and there was nothing, then a day later or even that same morning I would drive to town and after more than one engine shut down in town as I did my errands it would pop up that there is an update now ready to install and the only place I have a connection to the internet is at home by wifi so its not as if it grabbed the download while driving. I don't trust these new vehicles due to all the crap they can decide to do while sitting for some days not running and run the battery down so most of the time if I know the truck will sit for a few days I plug in the battery tender I have mounted under the hood and so the only time the truck must have downloaded software was when it was sitting in the garage where the signal is awful but I have that tender plugged in and somehow it managed to download it. I honestly detest all this crap, way to easy to leave a person stranded.    Since I don't trust any of it I don't do the install of the already downloaded software until I get home and sometimes have even sat in the truck to watch what its doing as its going through the process to its conclusion as its not like it is set up that it will tell you the next time you fire up the engine that the update that was initialed actually installed or installed properly. Yes I can go into the updates and see the list. After I go through the install where I feel its safe to do so in case it breaks down as a result, I will plug in the battery tender after the fact to recharge as I don't know how much power its taking just to do the install and that can take a while for it to install. 
    • Thanks for the reply. All settings were correct and the engine was off, as it was supposed to be. It turned out to be something simple. I took a drive for about an hour. I must have had a low battery without knowing it. The voltage gauge on the display looked ok. At the end of my drive, I shut off the engine and the update prompt came up and it updated normally. It’s ironic because one of the features of the update is a reduction of battery drain.
