had my recall for the reprogramming done this past Monday and since then I have not saw my truck go into V4 mode once.... anyone else notice this? It has been extremely cold around here so maybe that is factoring in

Had mine done yesterday and the 50 mile average looks to have dropped from 16 to 13. Haven't changed the way I drive it (at least consciously) . Only factors are the recall and temps dropped 35 degrees about the same time. I did have it done at a Chevrolet dealer but they've always done the work on my other GMC and they have access to all the GM software so I don't think that would factor in at all. Will give it a few days to warm up to see if its the temps or if it did infact drop that much.

Has anybody seen or heard what was actually changed/reprogrammed/modified with the recall? The problem has to do with excessively high exhaust temps during prolonged idle. I can't see how a fix to idle programming would have any impact on MPG (up or down), voice recognition, remote start, power steering, LED radio rings, or anything else people are noticing after this recall reprogramming.

I noticed absolutely no change to anything after having the recall performed BTW.

It would be nice to see an actual write up of what was "fixed" and how they fixed it.

I got a Q&A document from my dealer when I had mine done. Doesn't say much, but here are the items that are most useful:

Q: What is the condition leading to the recall?

A: A series of malfunctions that may lead to overheating of the exhaust system and possible fire.

Q: Why did an overheating exhaust system cause a fire?

A: The overheating, coupled with a lack of under hood airflow (vehicles parked and idling), led to melting of components near the exhaust and a subsequent fire.

Q: What is the specific problem:

A: A certain series of events during a vehicle startup may occur which causes certain diagnostic trouble codes to be set, leading the engine to go into reduced power mode. An anamaly in the reduced power mode software within the engine control module can cause the engine to overheat when the vehicle is in Park and idling. This may cause melting of components and ultimately combustion.

Q: What is the repair for these vehicles?

A: The Engine Control Module will be reprogrammed to modify the Power Management Mode software in order to prevent the condition. The new calibration will be available early next week.

So it sounds like Active Power Management was the issue, which maybe could explain why people are seeing differences in V4 vs. V8 operation.

Or is it fuel management...I'm not sure of the terminology here.

Two different things. AFM (V8/V4) has nothing to do with the recall.

One of the Answers that I posted above said: "An anamaly in the reduced power mode software within the engine control module can cause the engine to overheat when the vehicle is in Park and idling. This may cause melting of components and ultimately combustion."

It also said something about changes to Power Management mode software. I wasn't sure if that had anything to do with V-4/V-8.

Power management I think pulls timing and reduces how much the throttle can open so if the engine gets hot or otherwise is seriously malfunctioning, you can limp off the road and that's about it.

The V4 mode won't activate in extremely cold weather....noticed that on mine..it began activating normally once the engine got to 210 even at 10-15 degrees outside...

Btw, the service man told me all this recall did was cut down on the fuel at idle therefore making the fuel mixture leaner to not generate as much heat in the exhaust while idling.......he also did 2 other updates while there but I'm not sure what...all I know mine is running fine since the recall reprogramming.

I had mine done yesterday. It was cold and my MPG went to hell so I figured I'd go see why my MPG went to hell and do the recall. They did the recall and said they wouldn't look into the half gas mileage complaint till I get about 3000 miles on.... I know when I'm getting bad gas mileage . but anyway. I noticed I'm barely getting into 4v when It use to be fairly easy to be in v4 and wouldn't be in v8 unless I was starting out or going up a somewhat steep grade. Small grades I would stay in 4v and the mileage would rise. I also notice gas smell when I went out to the truck after hitting remote start. Like the old ford 351/400m motors. you could smell the gas . but those were good for 12mpg and I'm getting 14mpg. How to go backwards??? but at least the truck might not burn up anymore..... tonight I noticed the truck would go into v4 but the truck operation temp was up around 200. I don't think it got to that this morning in the 12 miles I drove it.

I got an actual letter today 1-25 but had already had the update performed 1-15.

Me too, update was done on mine the day after the release.
