Speed Limiter hides vehicle manufacturers defect from consumers

Here's hoping. If you get a new one go take it for a spin prior, go tear down the interstate, around town, get a nice shakedown cruise.

Good luck, I hope you get a solid truck like my beast. The only problem I've encountered is I rack up miles too fast because I love to drive

The Camaro's with same 6L80  transmission can handle well over 100 with no problem.

Wait....nope....they have had recalls for the tranny...cooler lines were also bad.....were killing rear axles.....

Do some googling on their issues....its across the board. They dont make em like they used to.

I have started the process for my truck to be replaced. It’s defects were in it from day one. I’ve been called everything but my name on here as some evil truck destroying warlock. This one is just a pretty lemon. I suspect it will be bought back and quickly crushed by GM. My dealer and their service personnel have been extremely caring in this ordeal and I have explained that they are just the retailer for a product and sometimes those product come from the factory defective. The vehicles they sell are made by man. I parked the Chevy two weeks ago and reluctantly have been driving my much harsher riding Ford. Hopefully Chevrolet will quickly resolve this issue and get me motering in a GM product again soon. I will ask for any potential replacement truck to be sent home overnight with me so my wife and son can also drive it/them.

Never happen Bart. That truck will be on a dealer lot within days of them taking it back (if they do).

I believe the limiter on my 16' is at 112. Was expecting it to click on at 98-105 like all other GM vehicles I have driven but it didn't. If I want to go that fast I use the cars but was curious about the limiter.

I never expected a brand new $51,000 Chevrolet truck would have the issues this one has. I watch young boys drive the hell out of their jacked up Chevy trucks with no breakages at all. Get mine on the interstate and it flies all to pieces underneath. It does look good doing it too and is beautiful albeit expensive yard art for my front lawn! First 950 miles of ownership: a tow truck ride, a new transmission, new torque converter, and new driveshaft. I still say the problem is in the rear axle!! Word from GM is silence.

So ----- you're one of those people who believe GM gives a rat's ass?

You used it for something it wasn't designed or built to do.  Now you're complaining that you went and broke it?  Typical liberal logic.

Actually it is neocon logic. Bankers and Wall Street get to blow up the economy and they get bailed out by the government who stick the tab to the taxpayers and their children. Add in a get out of jail free approach by the Justice Department and small wonder that there is so much abuse.

The reason:

Jerimiah 10:23 (BBE) I know, Jehovah, that man’s course does not belong to him; walking and placing his step does not belong to any man.

The result:

Ecclesiastes 8:9 (BBE) All this I saw, keeping my mind on all the work that was done under the sun, at a time when man had control of man to his own harm.

God gave us the steering wheel when we said we could drive better than he can and we drove it straight into the ditch. No logic to it.

update: first driveshaft was out of round. This destroyed the tail shaft section of the trans at 650 miles on the odometer. Trans repaired and new torque converter installed. Over the next 260 miles the vibration was still there. Took it back, this time they actually determined the driveshaft was out of round and replaced it along with determining the driveshaft was the reason for the first failure. Got it back but truck now had a different vibration. Took it back for 3rd visit. This time a bad tire was found and all four were force balanced. New vibration some better but still there. Test drove a 2018 truck. It vibrates too. GM say they are not responsible, that the truck is performing per design. The dealer has bent over backwards and admits there is nothing else repair wise they can do. Over the last couple days I’ve drove it a couple hundred miles and the driveshaft vibration is coming back. It should be noted that the new driveshaft was only one half as out of round as the original one, hence the vibration changing its frequency that it appears. I’ve determined that it is just a negative characteristic of the truck’s engineering and I’m stuck with the decision to live with it or take a loss and trade this new truck for a different brand, or trade into a different model GM vehicle. Basically no good option left. Hopefully this issue helps innocents make the decision to steer clear of these trucks. Praying that the 2019 redesign solves these vibration drivability issues??!!

Have you considered enlisting the services of someone like Moser to make a new shaft that can actually get it right? It would be much cheaper, no matter how much it cost, that a trade of any sort. Yea, not warranty but if they can't fix it, it can't get fixed.

One critical part of this you may want to consider is that truck tires are not speed rated for what you're trying to do.....They're built for load, not speed. If they make a truck to drive at 140, you won't be able to tow your trailer anyway, the load rating of a high speed tire is much lower... Just my 2 cents...

Hope you get it all sorted out.....

What an interesting read.   Thanks guys.

Bart - glad you have some resolution, more than some here might have expected.   I suspect most - if not all - would wish you well, but many of your posts were very accusatory and abrasive.   That’s ok, but probably explains some of the reactions you subsequently objected to.  Certainly you are entitled but so are they.

You’re accurate in describing I-10 as an 85MPH zone from Biloxi right up to Pensacola.

Meanwhile, I have a couple of real questions:   What’s the recommended break-in period, is it 500 or 1000?    Even after I hit whichever, I’d still be concerned enough about longevity not to drive it like I was shuttling illegals across the border.  (Lots of metaphors here, I chose this one for Bernie Wintersun).

Also, previously noted, Bart do you still run the factory-supplied tires?   Yikes!  100MPH+ on the GY GSA’s...?

If your running the speed limit Biloxi to Pensacola is 70. Going west it turns to 75 in Texas.

    • I have a 2015 Silverado and sometimes I can not get in to the truck. I use the key to unlock the driver door. Something is locking the truck when I unlock it, last night I left the truck open and this morning it was locked with the mirrors folded in. This happens while driving so it is now a safety issue. I reach down for the folding button and they open, then they close again.  Any advice, thank you,   Ed
    • Did you ever find a resolution to this? my 2019 Silverado 1500 is showing the exact same headlights issues with the exact same symptoms.  would help a ton if anyone has any advice on this or better yet a known solution..
    • Wawa and Meijer here have ethanol free (88 & 89) I use for my mower and lawn equipment.  Its not much more than reg.  I paid $3.29 a few weeks ago.
    • tl; dr I've now reached the 6th floor of hell. I'm chronicling my journey for my morning readers.   Pulling the top of the intake apart was moderately easy but it involved a lot of parts, connections, and minutae. I was preparing for the new fuel lines to arrive ("nut and bolt kit" it's called). The fuel line connections are notched and held in place by the manifold and a metal plate with a T27 screw.   It's on the back of the intake, under the firewall, with little clearance, and two hard metal fuel lines in the way. I was using Franken-tools (weird combinations of 1/4 inch ratchet with/without an extension, with a bit holder for my T27) to get in there. One of my sockets and bits fell off and has yet to emerge on the floor. I lost a second setup and that's when I almost started throwing tools. But that was the point at which I had gotten traction on the Torx head, and it promptly stripped. No more traction.   I started humming "1-877-kars-4-kids" because I was about at that point. You know what? I'm $1500 into this thing and I can make it disappear just as quickly. This isn't fun anymore. I had spent a lot of time already "tidying" around the engine bay: Fixing all the "someone's been here before!" BS. The truck has been exclusively dealer- and shop- serviced and I'm reminded of why I never let other people work on my cars unless absolutely necessary.   Speaking of dealer service. This truck has a 1" stack of records going back to 1995. I put them all in an excel spreadsheet, date/mileage/description.   The CPI spider has been replaced 4 times in 85k miles. The EGR? Another 4. Multiple, multiple O2 sensors. One Cat. 4? Sets of plugs and wires, and I swear half the stack is diagnosis paperwork for "misfire, runs rough, extended crank, dies at stoplights".   GM was producing some proper crap back then. And it was still well within the era of brittle/crappy plastic. (Windows 95 was released the same month this truck was sold new, we HAD the technology!!)   There (was) a plastic shroud around the evaporator core and HVAC fan in the engine bay. I noticed a chunk of it missing so I poked at it some more and it literally shattered. Touched it some more and pieces were crumbling off. Had a good laugh. Clearly whatever plastic garbage they were using had broken down over 30 years and was literally turning to dust. That was a good half hour of using a shop vac to remove the rest of it.   Back to it.   I was going to give up for the evening but then decided I'm already level 10 pissed off at the stripped screw: G* D* it, give me my tools back -- and my JOY. We'll do this the hard way: The whole intake is coming off.   Blazer won Round II. After finally finding and accessing the 12 intake bolts and using a pry bar to unseat it from the heads, it popped loose in an explosion of gunk and grime raining down into open ports. Awesome.   6 times I reminded myself: Be careful of the temperature sender on the front of the intake.   YEAH, I forgot again and snapped it clean off in the removal. Add another $20 to the ever-growing list of new parts this thing is consuming.   The shame is, long before removing the intake, I had changed the oil in prep for Tuesday's momentous fuel line replacement that was going to be the magic fix and I'd have a running Blazer to tool around in this next weekend. The intake removal, including raining gunk, also gushed dirty coolant all over the valley. Of course it did. Welp, there goes another $35.   I now need an intake gasket set, bolt set, coolant temp sensor, another 5 quarts of oil, some RTV. Don't worry, I've already got 3 new jugs of Dexcool and a thermostat waiting. I'll fill it with clean water first to get it running, dump it, and then add the Dex later on in case... well, let's not go there. I'm only tearing this down once, next time the truck is going on Marketplace for FREE.   Oh, and I'm going to need vacuum hose for all the stupid connections placed at the rear of the engine which have since disintegrated. Come on, GM....tell me you don't do that anymore?   Oh, and the ears on the distributor where the cap screws down are both cracked. I mean, why not put a new distributor in it too. You get a distributor, YOU get a distributor, Everyone gets a new distributor!   This truck isn't out of the woods yet...I'm already questioning how much more time I'm willing to sink in.
    • NewDude, thank you for the suggestions!    I did follow up and the dealer indicates he has an open CX case and is working with DPAC (Dealer Parts Assistance Center).   Per the dealer, GM has had a quality spill and is not providing an update for when a replacement engine will be available.
