RST vs Trail boss why you chose yours? Would you switch?

Boys here's my take on ride.  I've own new since 2010., 12 , 14, 16,  My last was a sixteen loaded gm slt with a level kit which I've done on all my trucks.  My new to me TB loaded with eighteens is a very nice ride and not ridged at all.  my first tank of gas hand calculated was 28 mph and I'm happy.  Can only get better.  4 new rides and it gets better every time.  But this is just my 2 cents...if your uncertain about rides, take them all out for test rides, if your going to buy the dealer will more than be happy to help you make the right chose.

didn't need the lift and wanted dual exhaust and the looks of the z71 rst. it really comes down to how you use your truck. If it's not a lot off-road, get the RST. Which isn't to say you can't put the RST in 4x4 and go through some mud, but that if you're doing canada or mountain backroads, the lift and knobby tires will be worth it.

I picked up a LT Trail Boss about a month ago and have no regrets. The biggest influence in my decision was the look. I really like the black wheels and black grille. And I would’ve thrown on a small level/lift anyway, so this just saved a step. I think it drives great for a truck. If you get the RST with Z71 package it should handle pretty much the same. Boils down to personal preference and if you plan on missing anything.

My best friend and I both bought Silverados on the same day. He bought an RST and I bought my TB.

 

Pros on the RST, much nicer ride. I actually test drove his and it rides like a caddy. 

 

His has a lot more techy stuff than mine, but mine is the custom and not LT.

 

Another pro is the dealer was able to give him more discounts on his vs mine because they only had a few TBs and they were selling good, so he got another 2K off his MSRP.

 

Why I bought my TB: I actually do go off roading often, nothing too crazy, but I do go off-roading and felt like this truck was ready to go from the sales floor, without needing to put any more money into it. It already has the lift, tires, and suspension. Granted, it doesn't have the best suspension or tires, but more than enough for my needs.

 

Also, I actually wanted the older 5.3 with AFM and not the new DFM. I also wanted the 6 speed and not 8 speed. All the tranny related complaints I've seen here have been with the 8spd.

 

Also, maybe I am old skool, but I didn't want all the extra tech stuff. For me it's less things to go wrong.

 

Finally, the TB just looks bad ass and I love the style of it. If it wasn't for the TB, I wouldn't even have looked at Chevy, especially considering my 16 Silverado was a gigantic POS and had to trade it in 3 months in.

your truck weight is 8250! are you sure? I mean the weight on my 2017 crew cab was only 5454 according to the shipping weight on the COO.

I had a 15 z71 with 18inch rims and a have a 17 ltz 4x4 with 20inch rims.  the 15 had the rancho shocks just like the trail boss and the ride was rougher in the z71

I looked at both and I ordered a 2020 Trail Boss with the 6.2. My decision came down to this. I think the Trail Boss looks better.

at the time my RST was exact same cost as custom TB, but it had much better interior, , just more options and STORAGE....only things I didn't get were tires, 2 spd transfer and 2" lift....after thinking it over I knew interiors are much harder to upgrade than exteriors....and I didn't really need a 2 spd transfer case, also seats are very low in new chevys so power seat at least in drivers was a must for me.....so I figured if I put my own lift and tires on mine I will basically have an LT trail boss which was at least 15k more than I paid for my RST, and I could choose my own suspension and wheel pkg.....no matter what it will still be far less than LT TB....and custom TB without storage and power seat was deal breaker...….so that was my thought process.....buy the interior the exterior is easy, and also save a ton of cash in process

 

my RST came with 18's and I like the stock look so probably wont change rim....just tires and susp

 

if you like look of TB it is not hard to duplicate, GM sells the kit and rims/tires can be bought or do your own choosing

 

TB has rancho monotubes, Z71 models (non TB Z71) have twin tubes.....consensus is twin tubes are not as nice as monotubes.....

yeah I am 51 and have no idea how lifted trucks morphed into these creatures....think its hideous and offers nothing...I don't get it and don't want to get it, but to each their own and if your making the payments do what you will.....even raptor uses 17's, because theyre is a benefit to having more sidewall off highway

 

lifted trucks replaced lowered trucks of the 80's

I have a 2019 LT crew cab TB (18” stock wheels with duratracs) and for the most part I’m happy.  I came from a 2015 sierra Denali with a 6.2.  I miss the 6.2 and It kind of pisses me off they strategized to delay the 6.2 a year for the TB I’m sure solely for money.  I will say as far as the 8 speed trans goes it’s 100% better than my Denali.   This was the reason I got rid of the Denali which already had it replaced under warranty at 30,000 miles and was still a piece of junk.  There are two complaints I have with the TB.  The suspension is really soft compared to previous trucks.  I can grab the side of the bed and shake the truck all over the place.  This made me think it would absorb a lot of the road.  However I’ve played with different tire pressures and it is flat out a rougher ride than I’ve ever experienced in any other half ton truck I’ve owned.  I also got better MPG in my sierra Denali with the 6.2.  I attribute this to the lift and duratracs on the TB but I figured the 5.3 would be somewhere close but it’s not being 1-2 mpg lower.  I’ve never been in an RST but they seem nice.  I think it basically boils down to looks.  I wanted a stock lift which is why I went with the TB.  If looks aren’t a big deal definitely go with the RST and save a little cash.  Only regret is not waiting for a 6.2 TB.

With the new updates to the 20’s with engine trims and other things. Are you gonna trade in your 19? I’m sure the dealers won’t mind a truck with 1-10k miles and you probably wouldn’t lose to much $. I’m patiently waiting like everybody for the i6 to show what it’s got. I’m very glad the 6.2 will also be offered as a 2nd choice but I’m 85% committed to the baby Dmax?

I have a 19 RST, my father in law has a 19 TB...I wouldnt personally switch. I like the RST for the random added features, the tow/sport mode is nice. I also am about 5'5'' haha so the TB is huge step up into. I also feel like you get more for your money when you go with the RST vs TB... simply due to the fact you either need to get a custom or an LT...both of which are easily 2-3k over a base custom/lt because the TB package which gets you the 2'' lift. I think if youre going to be out in the woods or off road more the TB is definitely the smart choice. He takes his everywhere and clears majority of areas with ease. Me on the other hand, I do more road tripping and city driving.

    • I will be one of those "blinded". One, I like new shiny things. Two, I've never kept any of them beyond the 3/36. Three, I don't finance anything. Four, yep, it's a waste of money....so,what? I'm doing my part of keeping automotive industry going and keeping my neighbors, most of whom are in it, employed. 😉      By the way this is the "signature... ¬  
    • Although there is a "recommended" weight by those who sell trailers, my experience has been that they are way too aggressive in their information, for me at least. My '22 with 6.6 Gas, has a payload of about 3400 lbs and depending on your specs (I don't have 4WD so it has a bit higher Payload than others) yours will likely be different. Payload is one of the most important numbers for towing. Although you "could" tow the max trailer weight for your truck, I, personally, would not go close to that number. Having said that, a lot depends on how/where you will be towing. I live in the LMD of BC and often tow to Denver, Co, along interstates (flat and mountains) and I find I need to keep it in 5th (6spd) for the trip and travel at around 65mph. This is for a trailer dry weight of just under 3500lbs. If you are only doing local, short trips, it would not be that big an issue if you had a heavier unit. You will be surprised how much stuff you load the trailer with, so I would only recognize the trailers "full" GVWR weight rating, then decide on the appropriate trailer from that number. If you are worrying about how much stuff you should be putting in a trailer, you might have too large a rig from the get-go. Once again, depending on what terrain/distance in which you will be pulling. Marv
    • davester, Thanks for the response, how ever, I think I am now a bit more confused than I was before I posted - - After I posted, I actually found a YT video of a guy who replaced his Module (above tire) and he only disconnected the ground cable of the battery, but you describe rubbing the two cables together after disconnecting. I presume that is to do as you describe and eliminate any residual energy? - When I picked up the Module (between my posting and reading your response) from the dealer, I specifically asked about any re-programming and he stated it was not necessary as it was simply plug and play. Don't know how knowledgeable he is, though. - The video I watched also showed the Module plug to be difficult to "unlock" and remove, but there was no mention of silicone, although the video did show a bunch of dust/dirt in and around the plug (old truck) during removal. Are you talking about silicone that was applied by the factory, or silicone that you applied prior to plugging in? Thanks again, Marv
