I just purchased a 2016 GMC SIERRA 2 wheel drive SLT pickup with the Crew Cab and the 6 1/2 foot bed. It test drove good around town but after purchasing it and getting it on the highway, I noticed a substantial vibration between 70 & 80 mph. Took it back to the dealer on Monday October 31, 2016 to have the bed liner sprayed in. Mentioned to them the vibration problem. The sales rep. had one of their techs test drive it and he agreed the vibration was substantial. They balanced the right rear tire and said it appeared to be better. They also mentioned that this is a truck and I should expect some vibration! When I test drove it, it didnt really feel any better. I plan to take it out on a smooth section of highway in the morning to see how it rides.

One thing I thought I noticed was that at 75mph on smooth flat surface my truck was vibrating substantially but I sensed when I started going up hill, it seemed like the vibration began to subside. I tried to repeat this but it did no seem to subside when going uphill.

 

Has anyone checked the pinion to transmission angles? I checked mine using the Tremec transmission smart phone app. It indicated my angles were all good.

 

Has anyone compared the pinion to transmission angles of the trucks shaking versus trucks that dont shake?

 

Has anyone placed a load in the bed to see if it makes any difference in the vibration?

 

I've spoken to three others that own similar trucks and they don't have the vibration problem. I did find that one of my friends that lives 400 miles from me, had purchased a GMC pu almost identical to mine and went threw all kinds of difficulty working with the dealer because his was experiencing similar vibration; balanced tires, replaced tires, etc and never solved the problem. He sold the truck and purchased a Tundra. GM has lost that customer for good!

 

I wish us all well with coming up with a resolution.

Yes my pinion angles were off. They added a "shim kit" to the rear leafs and replaced my driveshaft. Fixed it for about a month or so then the vibe came back with a hum from the rear end when coasting over 40mph and it shakes even worse under hard acceleration or towing after the "shim kit"

Be prepared, with the colder weather, it gets worse.

That would make me lean towards the problem either being tire related.

After reading all the comments on this site, I'm going to request the dealer to load balance the tires, preferably with me there!

That would make me lean towards the problem either being tire related.

Temperature and humidity affects everything, not just tires, you might also notice your steering column/ wheel get a more firm feel to it. fluids change viscosity, metallurgy changes. Temp will literally affect every aspect of the vehicles. I can also guarantee that its not tires, they have been replaced 3 times

I've read a lot of the post on here and my issue a strange vibration around 80-90mph when gunning it. I did get the balanace and rotation done and helped while cruising at 70-80mph. So while driving normal (70-80mph) no vibration at all, really smooth drive but when hitting the eccelarator and gear down shifting getting up to 90mph, I feel a vibration in the rear end which is bothering the hell out of me. It's not a huge vibration but noticeable at those speeds. Wheels are already balanced and rotated and from one person fix was getting the driveshaft checked out and balanced/ fixed.

Also I recently installed RC 2.5" leveling lift kit but I highly doubt the lift kit is causing a vibration while getting on the accelerator at 80-90mph.

Just wanted to relate my experience with a bad vibration. My truck is a 2015 GMC 1500 LWB with General 17" tires. Standard truck with a 5.3. Checked the tires and found a rear tire with a shifted belt and thought it would be the cause since the vibration was felt in the seat. $188 later it was not the cause. Took it to a Chevy dealer 3 times in St Augustine. Balanced the tires 2x and then blamed the Leer cap that I had. Sold the cap. They charged me $53 for that diagnosis. Didn't help. Took it twice to a Jacksonville dealer that messed w the tires twice and even gave me a new tire. Didn't help.

 

Both dealers told me that I had to live with the vibration that was constant from 65 to 75. Since I don't give up easily and knew the truck definitely had a problem I took it back to an independent mechanic.. Running on the lift the driveshaft was visibly bent. .35 in the middle. 07 and .10 on the ends. It has a label on the shaft saying it was built by AAM. No damage was visible of any type. Even though I asked each dealer to check the driveshaft its GM's policy to not check them. They told me that the customer can remove and check it and if its bad they will replace it.

 

Stay tuned and I will follow up when the truck goes in Nov 18.

Here is the update on what they are seeing, he said that seven out of 10 of them tend to be fine, It tends to be more common in different configurations long beds extended cabs double cabs they think it might be related to issues with driveshaft which he said is The longest they have ever been. There is some truth to the issue being caused by tires specifically 22 inch wheel packages with Bridge stone or continentals mounted on them. They have rectified the problem in some instances by putting Michelin's on them. There was some discussion about a bulletin coming out related to the ring gear not being in specification, unacceptable variances on the teeth causing a vibration at speeds. Some of you may know this but GM will put out a bulletin ahead of a recall, if the vehicle comes in with the problem they can fix it per the bulletin but it saves them the money of doing a full recall. He feels there are secondary issues with GM putting too large and too wide of a tire on the truck that is not designed for it but that is more of his opinion. I would be curious as to how many folks with this problem have Bridgestone or continental tires, that may be the best place to start in terms of fixing it, get those tires off and have your dealer spring for Michelin's or a better tire.

GM is keeping a close eye on this but they do not want to address it in mass, and will continue to push the dealers to go with the tire balance agenda

Bottom line is GM is tight lipped on what the problem might be and that likely means it is a defective part or configuration issue due to the cost of going public. Especially with 1000's of these still on their lots

Could be a ring gear issue exaggerated by poor quality tires or a drive shaft balance issue. I don't think he knows and GM ain't talking. The dealer wanted to go thru and evaluate remaining new inventory and try to address it prior but GM zone guy said not to touch them until they are sold. Not surprised about that

Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
    • Can it still be Assembled II?   Viscosity on the decline by various means. Heat on the rise making that worse. Engine RPM in the tank. Smaller motors with more boost trying to emulate an electric motor. Full torque, zero rpm. Then we will triple the OCI. Argh.    But wait....there is more. LSPI has pushed a shift from Ca to Mg and as that cost more PLUS the run to lower sulfur compounds the TBN is moving in the wrong direction for the increased OCI's demanded.    That not being enough to placate a demand for a parameter they can't measure the other sulfur bearing compounds are also under attack. That would be zinc and phosphorus sulfonate compounds. To some degree those are being replaced with boron esters and others, i.e. titanium ect. All of which have shorter service lives. And there there is the "Secrete Sauce" marketing for AW adds that 'Can't be detected by UOA's" but trust me because I (the blenders) never ever lie.    Spoiler alert; ALL additives are sacrificial! Smaller amounts of the old blended with less robust versions of the new do not equal longer service lives. So what are the blenders recommending? Wait for it.......   MOVING THE GOAL POSTS! OMG      Let's declare the long standing TAN/TBN crossover irrelevant and tell people that soot is a great 'graphite' based lubricant which can aid tribo films. Wait, what? Let's declare that the standards used for oxidation and nitration were to conservative and can be expanded. Let's tell them that because GDI fuel dilution, although being a VISCOSITY KILLER and an acid generator is actually okay because we have better base oils that limit viscosity failure limits. (Said knowing this is measured in fractions of a centipoise and in bases not commonly used in shelf oils)   Lying from the heart is not just the new normal but we have a public, a very young public, that is so ignorant of the facts and so sure of their "RESEARCH" into AI driven models base in regurgitated  instead of scientific research based unvarnished, peer reviewed FACTS that the incoming guard is loosing their grip on reality and the OEM's are tickled pink while the blends bend the knee.    You have an ever limited set of tools to work with. And sooner or later those will be taken from you as the API and the EPA strangle the last remaining fluids from the system. What you have left is your wits. If you care to use them.    At some point in the very near future it will not longer be possible to do "What is best for the machine", and be replaced with "The best you have access too". You WILL be rewarded with half the life and twice the cost. That isn't that hard to predict.         
    • I trust you saw the other comment where he knew what he was talking about !. Yes, these darned newer vehicles with all their so smart they are stupid technology, goes and drains the battery down. As you might see my other comment, I installed a Noco 5 battery tender under the hood and at this point still have the cord routed so I have to lift the hood and then plug it in but am typically parked in a garage or a shed so its not risking the engine hood in the wind. That way I am assured or hopefully so of not finding I have a battery drawn down and can't even start the truck and that also damages the battery to draw it down too far. 
    • I guess no surprise my guesses were wrong !, at least now I know if I ever happen to see it grayed out in my own truck as to what is going on.    I never happened to catch my truck with it grayed out, it seemed every time I would test to see if there was an update it never found anything and yet more than once I would check to see if there was an update and there was nothing, then a day later or even that same morning I would drive to town and after more than one engine shut down in town as I did my errands it would pop up that there is an update now ready to install and the only place I have a connection to the internet is at home by wifi so its not as if it grabbed the download while driving. I don't trust these new vehicles due to all the crap they can decide to do while sitting for some days not running and run the battery down so most of the time if I know the truck will sit for a few days I plug in the battery tender I have mounted under the hood and so the only time the truck must have downloaded software was when it was sitting in the garage where the signal is awful but I have that tender plugged in and somehow it managed to download it. I honestly detest all this crap, way to easy to leave a person stranded.    Since I don't trust any of it I don't do the install of the already downloaded software until I get home and sometimes have even sat in the truck to watch what its doing as its going through the process to its conclusion as its not like it is set up that it will tell you the next time you fire up the engine that the update that was initialed actually installed or installed properly. Yes I can go into the updates and see the list. After I go through the install where I feel its safe to do so in case it breaks down as a result, I will plug in the battery tender after the fact to recharge as I don't know how much power its taking just to do the install and that can take a while for it to install. 
    • Thanks for the reply. All settings were correct and the engine was off, as it was supposed to be. It turned out to be something simple. I took a drive for about an hour. I must have had a low battery without knowing it. The voltage gauge on the display looked ok. At the end of my drive, I shut off the engine and the update prompt came up and it updated normally. It’s ironic because one of the features of the update is a reduction of battery drain.
