I learn something new every day. Good thing I haven't tested my own advice yet. I thought it just gave you more torque and less throttle curve so you could ease out and keep footing easier. :D

Sometimes the extra torque causes the tires to break loose. On big grades off road though, it's great. Up or down.

I've merged two of these threads together folks. Please search before creating a redundant thread.

4 wheel drive has to be the most confusing and misunderstood part of modern vehicles. There are many, many different variations, but fundamentally there really are just two. Full time and part time.

The bottom line is, the current model Silverado has a "part time" only 4 wheel drive system.

LT trim levels get an "automatic" engagement system that engages and disengages 4 wheel drive when the rear wheels spin. It is still a part time system. Yes, it works very well, but it is not even close to a full time 4WD system.

Well if I engage my auto4 and leave it on all the time than I can argue it is fulltime auto 4 wheel drive. I don't get this arguement. The auto 4 function along with stabilitrak and traction control act very similar to AWD. So what is the big deal about details. The overview here is auto 4 is similar to awd. Close enough it even says so in the read outs on the off-road menu in the speedo cluster.

There was another thread a few weeks ago about this same topic. It didn't go well

there have been several forum posts on this exact subject. I won't be surprised if it comes down to outright name calling soon. You know if you use it you can't drive or if you refuse to use it your an old fogey who doesn't want to accept change like this. Where is my popcorn?

I've been told that leaving the truck in 'Auto' is hard on the system. That you should only use 'Auto' when there is a reason to do so.....

Any opinions on this?

It's designed to be used, but if it's sunny and 85 why put unnecessary wear and tear on it. If it's raining or lightly snowing and you wouldn't normally use 4HI, but want the peace of mind of Auto engaging if needed, go ahead and use it

I only ask because it comes in 'Auto' from the dealer. I left it in 'Auto' for a while, but then I was told that it wears out the clutch-type device that engages the AWD when you don't really need it.

We get five months of snow/winter here, so I usually run in 2WD and shift to Auto whenever we have snow on the roads. I don't really ever drive in 4H at all.

Yeah if the roads are black there's no need for auto
