LOL... Awaiting the tune from BB! After I got the tune files and log file sent in at separate times, geez im not used to this stuff but cant wait.

Cant wait to get my tune as well!! I'm going with a local performance shop that has tuned all of my trucks...the beauty of living in south Texas is the plethora of performance shops that specialize in GM trucks!! Love to be from where the truck is king on the drag strip!! haha

 

I got a reasonable quote as well for jumping to 4.10s from my 3.08s for both axels installed as well as a true trac for $1800....plus my 1 7/8" headers are on the way from ARH.....I need to get home soon!! workin these oilfeilds is nice but all my goodies are down in Texas!!!

 

 

 

anything else that I would be missing?? truck is leveled on 33s right now and will go 35s later.....plan on procharger for summer 2016 if all goes well.....and i dont dump this one for a 2016 with a 6.2L since it's almost paid off!!!

I'm fairly new to what's involved in custom tuning a truck.

I have put down a deposit for a "in person" tune by Black Bear this January in Sacramento.

What is the difference between a "in person" tune and purchasing their AutoCal and tuning a truck yourself as you guys have been explaining?

Is there a benefit with a "in person" tune besides meeting both Justin and Jerrod?

Justin tuned my truck on the fly with his computer hooked up. He had my AutoCal preloaded and fine tuned a few settings once it was installed. I didn't have it before so I can't comment on how it would be sending the recorded info back to them and installing their tune yourself. Great people to deal with.

I am still evaluating my tune that Justin reconfigured for me and all I can say is he is doing a great job and has my transmission shifting very snappy. I had him do some readjusting after my transfer case update and I wanted my transmission to shift according to the rpm's of the engine; softer pedal lower rpm's, full pedal high rpm's...

I have only driven maybe 50 miles but so far I am liking that adjustment...

One thing I am going to write to him about is a very small moment of "non responsiveness" as she shifts. I do NOT have the V4 mode turned off and I notice it at each shift. After I plug in my range, it seems non existent.

He has reprogrammed my speedometer for the taller tires but I do regret not buying the correct tuner... I cannot make any smaller adjustments so for every small change I have to write Justin... My bad!

I'm really looking forward to meeting these guys in Sacramento next month and even more so, tuning this truck so that it drive as it should....

You will love your truck post tune. Justin really took his time and dialed my TCM tune in the way I like it. Yeah you will pick up a little HP but the drivability and no more bang and clang is worth every penny.

Is it strange my truck had 500 miles on it and i contacted BB? LOL. The 08 sierra i had shifted real nice after the BB tune. It ran 170,000 miles with the same tune it.

Now, BB is waiting on the ECM tuneability (TCM is available)for the 2016 but, living in Canada, perhaps the flash counter may be an issue as i don't know if they have to prove anything to void the warranty and with 99,000 miles of warranty left i am not sure i want to screw that up.

Looks like a few others on here were nervous too when they still had lots of warranty left.

Let me know what you find with the V4 mode, Mine is enabled also with the performance tune - sometimes when it switches in and out of V4 mode it does something strange with the torque converter lockup.

I haven't wrote to Justin yes, as the Holidays have brought a ton of stuff to do... like having to reschedule my dental appointment because they were running late.

I sure got a dirty look when I brought the wife home a custard doughnut today and she found no custard inside... :nopity:

I do run the Range mostly within city like driving, but have notice that the small or short hesitation is more noticeable when the engine is colder over being in running temp.

Not relevant to this post but I am getting a negative view to my Cooper Discovers tires... With just a little rain the spin at start... I want my Dueler Revo's...

I have not contacted Justin about my 1st to 2nd shift issue. It seems the cold might be part of the issue so I am still evaluating... As for the rework that I had Justin due to allow trans shift to correspond to throttle pressure, I really like it. When I take off at a slow pace my trans shifts about 2200 and doesn’t make the engine whine out to 4000 or so…

I am getting my desktop ready to go into the shop this week... a few issues need be corrected... The issue with the possible V4 mode is on a back burner right now, but using the “Range” does seem to help.

It looks like most people are running tunes but also have quite a few mods. Has anyone done a Blackbear tune on a stock truck? I'm just making sure my money is well spent. My goal is to clean up the laggy/clunky shifting, disable AFM, and potentially gain a little power. Is anyone extremely happy their Blackbear or other custom tune on a stock vehicle? Eventually I'll do intake, headers, exhaust. But for now just looking to improve the shifting quality.

Many many people have tunes and nothing else. Quite frankly, once you do tune, that's all you really need. There is not problem tuning a stock truck without having additional modification. If you do end up doing other mods in the future such as intake, headers, etc., your tune can be modified to accommodate those modifications and net you the maximum results.

 

Blackbear is top of the line. Many members on here have and are currently using blackbear. Another one is Diablew tune. Takes the Diablo canned tune and does a professional tune upgrade. I went that route and I'm very pleased.

To Hauz_Z71, I agree with Kerrslight's comments. A tune on an otherwise stock truck will give you a bump in performance, shifting and possibly a slight increase in fuel economy. It is hard to explain, but you will enjoy your truck a lot more. It will act like you just took 1000 lbs out of the bed and then drove it. I personally feel like GM is handcuffed by the EPA and government regulations. A tune will give your truck the ability to perform like the engineers intended. The difference is impressive. BUT, you have to ask yourself if you are prepared to forfeit your factory warranty on the engine and drivetrain for the benefits of a tune?

 

So far, I have been fortunate. Have tuned my last two Corvettes, a 2002 and a 2010 and a 2008 Sierra Denali 6.2L. All had headers installed with the tune. Not one of them had any engine or transmission problems related to the tune. The 2008 Sierra did need to have the transmission partially rebuilt and GM covered it under warranty at 35,000 miles. It had a factory defect in a weld on the 2-3 clutch basket that had nothing to do with the tune. I told the dealer it was tuned and they still covered it because it was clear there was a defect in the weld from day one. All were tuned by Chuck Mosello (Chuck CoW) from Corvettes of Westchester. Nothing against, BlackBear. They have an excellent reputation. If not for previous experience with Chuck, I would go with BlackBear. Both use EFI Live and an AutoCal. The AutoCal allows you to connect to your vehicle and send scans to your tuner via your PC or laptop. Then your tuner reads and analyzes your scans and sends you a tune via email for you to put in your vehicle. It is a custom tune specific to your vehicle, the gas in your region and how your vehicle is used. Good luck with your decision!

    • Pretty much zero rust on the truck, the frame is super clean. Non-snowy area of California for its whole life. They didn't mention JB weld specifically, just a silicone style seal. 
    • Needs a manifold gauge hooked up and the pressures read.   If you don't have one, time to take it to a shop and have it diagnosed.  
    • How rusty is the truck?     The transfer cases on these are an aluminum case.  If its anything like the rear diffs on the 2015-2022 Chevy Trax, those will corrode bad to the point it will push fluid through the housing via corrosion porosity or a crack from age/stress.    We have seen folks over tighten the drain and fill plugs on these transfer cases and crack them that way as well.    So I'd say its a 50/50 shot on re-sealing the case.  If all of the surfaces are good and its not badly corroded, they probably can re-seal it.  GM uses RTV to seal the case halves.   If they mention JB Weld, the issue is the case.  Be it a crack or corrosion.  JB Weld "might" hold if they clean EVERYTHING very well and drain the fluid out of the case and clean the crack and then seal it.      
    • A while back, my truck (2018 GMC Sierra 1500 5.3) went in for an o2 sensor and routine service. The tech identified that my rear output seal on my transfer case was leaking, and recommended I have them replace it. At the time I didn't think anything of it, and had them do the repair. Less than a month later, I noticed that the recently repaired seal was leaking again. I called the shop that did the repair and they warrantied the repair and replaced the same seal again. A few months later, I noticed that once again the same seal leak had come back. It wasn't a great time to bring it in and I ended up just living with it for 6 months or so, noticing small (smaller than a baseball) size oil stains below the truck when it would sit for a while, as well as oil spray on the frame (to the point where it actually took the underbody coating off in that one spot). Finally got around to brining it in again, but this time I took it to a dealership service center since I am in a different part of the state for school. They identified the same output seal leaks and recommended they replace them. They also said there was no scoring on the inside of the transfer case, so it didn't need to be replaced. They chalked up the original repair failures to non oem seals and a job that wasn't done correctly. Now they called and said the seals are holding after driving/sitting for a while, but they found a very small leak in the middle, that they recommended they seal with some kind of silicone/jb weld (not sure what they are using). I haven't picked up the truck yet, but I have been reluctant about this whole repair process because I feel like they are just fixing the same thing that keeps coming back, and I am concerned there could be another root cause for the seal failing. Has anybody else experienced anything like this, or have any ideas on other things that could be the root cause?
    • I just started having AC issues with my 2012 Sierra. The symptom is blowing warm air on all vents.  Here is what I have checked so far. Compressor clutch appears to be engaging and cycling  I checked all fuses and relay, no issues. The only thing I have notices is the short line that comes from the firewall is very cold / frosted. This line is approximately 12 inches long. The coldness stops when it hits the first line connector. As far as AC compressor - At first start the clutch engages, runs continually, Short AC line frosts up. After idling for several minutes the AC line thaws out some but is still cool and the compressor clutch starts cycling on and off every 5 seconds.  Any suggestions on what to look at next would be appreciated.
