  • I just finished reading almost all 68 pages of the thread. I had re@ched our to two other venders and didn’t get real responsive answers.
  • what do I need to get CarPlay in a 2016 silverado
  • that got the $200 credit. These other two veneers were lacking in email information to that question.
  • i asked this question to
  • th3magpi3 he said only the hmi 2.5 programmed to my vin. I said send me one....he invoiced me and I paid he programmed and shipped. I’m waiting for it to arrive around January 2nd. His price was substantially less then these other two venders too.
  • my case of being a 2016 and already having radio and usb there made a price difference. But please the other two venders were outrageous pricing.
  • shop around guys....thanks
  • th3magpi3 for your help and input.

Also happy to help with any programming needs! I can help with HMI upgrades, denali cluster upgrades, VIM, rear cam in motion etc. Just fire me a PM and I'll be happy to help with your custom project :)

P.S. - Have something unique in mind? We also do custom reverse engineering applications so nothing is quite out of bounds. Send me your ideas and I'll do my best to make them a reality.

HMI 2.5 to 3.0?

One of Magpie's early customers here, totally satisfied customer. I did buy a European 2.5 hmi that doesn't support voice on nav ( not his fault). I"ve got an iphone 11 and have intermittent success getting carplay to start. Android Auto was flawless with my oneplus 6t.  I first thought it was related to my seatbelt being unbuckled, but still not activating 100%. Using factory apple cable. Any thoughts?

iPhones have issues with CarPlay.  Common problem.

I experienced similar issues with my iPhone X. I would have to unplug and replug the lightning connector a few times. I also have noticed since switching to a pixel 3 XL I haven't had that issue.

I also noticed that the issue was reproduced in a factory 2018 Colorado (another vehicle in my household). If you search you can see there have been issues with iOS 13 but I don't know if they have been resolved yet.

Thanks for the reply, I only updated the radio and hmi for carplay/android auto. I only use these on a long trip(rarely).  Kind of dissappointing that carplay isn't reliable( not surprising). Never been an apple fan, but my work likes them and the battery life is pretty amazing.

I tried turning off bluetooth on my iphone and it started carplay 3/3 times today. Not sure if this is a true fix or not, interestingly it turns bluetooth back on when it connects.

I had to switch which USB port I was plugged into my jump seat for it to recognize my iPhone

What’s the European HMI?  Does it show anything different?  Miles or kilometers?

It had a European map on the hmi, was able to update to 2019 N America map, but no voice commands. Bought off ebay and shipped to Magpie.Listed as Silverado hmi, obviously not from N. America. The nav is horrible anyway, would recommend hmi without nav.

    • 2011 GMC, 5.3, 183k miles. OK, ....I don't know, this may open a bucket of discussionworms. Ha. Here's the issue. I've been following GM's "mandate" to use Dexos 1 oil, 5w30 (Castrol). I'm thinking maybe I should consider a High Mileage oil due to 183k miles. Castrol and Mobil 1 both make HM but both do not display the Dexos 1 label. So....since I'm way past warranty does it hurt anything at all to change to the HM oil? Its not "Dexos 1" but I kinda doubt it will hurt a thing. I'd like some input especially if someone has done this. Thanks
    • It is a company truck. Not under warranty. Both companies I’m involved with usually buy trucks that are discounted when looking. Except what the owners drive. Being retired and minority owner. I don’t drive a company truck. If they have the new GM gas engine it would be in a service truck.
    • Update!   Had the dealer look at the issue. First tech says no problem?? I said there was no voltage on the brake terminal on the 7 pin connector! He said he did not know what pin I was talking about. So they bring out a seasoned tech and I explain to him. He attaches a VOM and has me push the brake, and sees no voltage!!    Tom, the seasoned guy says lets go back to my service bay and look closer. We discover thru his on line system that the controller is a "smart controller" as it needs to detect a trailer connected before the brake voltage is allowed to the 7 pin connector!!! He also showed me a GM bulletin stating some trailers with LED lights have such low resistance the controller wont recognize them!!! I was thinking WTF, but thanked him for bringing me back into the service bay and explaining this all to me. He also plugged in a trailer simulator and it showed the brake controller was indeed working.   After my dealership visit I hooked up to an older camper with standard 1157 lights and the truck did connect and the electric brakes worked great!    Not to sure what I have to do with the equipment trailer with LED lights, I cant tow it with no brakes.   Why did something so simple for many years have to get so complicated!
    • Do find out as that would be interesting if they have been using any L8T engines or for that matter have been running any of the Ford gas 7.3 to see how they have been panning out.    I assume your nephews engine replacement was on his dime as the regular warranty would have long past unless he had some form of extended warranty that covered such events. That shows though and may depend on the year of the build that failures are occurring with the valve train well beyond the warranty distance and more than likely so will others have that sneak up on them.
    • I realize this is an old post and its probably been talked about since then on this forum and I may have mentioned it myself but the Chev multi flex tailgate on the HD trucks are all aluminum so there is that one item that I am aware of on a current GM HD truck that is aluminum but if its the standard tailgate then its still a steel unit as far as I am aware to current 2026 model year.
