Turbo 6.2 almost done!!

Wow, Lots of chatter the past few days. Sorry I've been traveling heavily for work. Sorry for the long response. 

 

I will break the timeline down a bit.  Short answer...no the truck is not done. To be clear it was finished and ready to go until I asked for more power....oops.

 

  • I will lay in the prefix here. I let the owner know I had plenty of time for him to spend on this build. I'm in a situation where I have multiple vehicles. At the time (May 2019) The shop was slammed with other vehicles and Mine was just a heads/cam job at the time. The ETA for completion was end of April. During that time I started to get the bug for more mods and we spoke about a LT4 blower laying around in storage which I purchased. Fast forward to April 20th..ish... The blower bolts right up to the new Texas Speed headers however the Snout sticks out 1" further than my drive assembly. This wasn't measured since my truck was still in the waiting line. I had two directions to go, spend over $3.5K for the correct assembly or $2-3K to exchange my blower to the correct type with a company based out of TX. I took Option Z go turbo. 
  • After putting the $2,900 I spent on the Blower and Nick Williams TB to the Massive turbo We had to wait for delivery of parts and the owners backlog of installs continued to grow. I didn't press him since we had parts on order. During that time period I did more research on "weak points" on the LT1 and saw Pistons we're a common issue over 550 whp so I purchased Diamond Pistols. 10:1 compression. When those arrived I delivered to the owner who ended up taking my block home to work over the weekends to keep something moving. Again I have multiple vehicles and wasn't pressing him. 
  • While the Block was out and being worked on I started to get more and more into weak points and upgrades grabbing a new Fuel system, High and Low side pumps as well as injectors, Meth kit, Total cooling systems etc. I just kept going and going pushing more and more of the build out. 
  • Fast forward to July or Whenever it was I read a tread about the drive shafts being a weak point and asked the shop not to dyne until I got a replacement. Which I did and posted about. They installed that and started firing up the engine. 
  • Dynoing went very well. The truck started putting out massive power with very low boost and no meth. Things were almost wrapped up when the big pull happened and now that the block has been removed it ended up being several bearings and two rods destroying the block. 
  • This obviously delayed the over all build and I ended up spending a bit on a built 7.0 cid from Texas Speed and Performance. 
  • Once the block arrived The shop came and picked it up and it was another countdown until my truck could have the busted engine removed, dissembled and start moving parts over to the beast block.
  • The engine is back in and fully reassembled. We're waiting on a new engine harness since the original was not in the best shape to begin with, probably the nasty chipmunks that dwell around my house. 
  • Once the harness comes in and is put on it's break in, bast tune, put a few hundred miles on it then the final Dyno. 
  • Once I get the final dyno I need to take the truck to a performance shop in CT that does Transmissions. I ended up buying the PATC Level 4 Phoenix rebuild kit with billet planet and 4 clutch torque converter. 
  • Overall goal is to be at 950-1000WHP just because. 

The shop hasn't done anything I haven't been aware of or planned on. The expectation was, take your time and do it right. The stock block was my fault. I should have upgraded the Rods and bearings with something like https://gwatneyperformance.com/product/gpi-lt1-drop-in-piston-rod-package/#configuration but hindsight is 20/20 as they say. And my goal at the time was 750-800 WHP on those stock components. Noooobueno. The gaskets we're an oversight on my behalf since I went from a 6.2L to 7.0L. It just never occurred to me I'd need new ones. so DUH moment on my part. All in all they've had my truck from mid March to Nov (9 months). All things considered on a build like this, I'm not worried. 

 

And again. I have two other new vehicles. This is my weekend toy ever since I got rid of my C63 AMG. Not goin to spell check or fix grammatical errors. Just got home from a 6 hour flight. Enjoy :). 

 

 

Final thought. I still think if anyone wants a totally different driving experience just throw on a Whipple, Procharger or Eddlebrock system. puts you over 500whp and you don't need to spend $30+k, Unless you can ......

It's and awesome and expensive build. I have the 5.3 and was debating if it is worth throwing a blower on it. I wish my truck came with the 6.2l though I still love what I have, it had been reliable.

I know nothing about builds but shouldn’t the shop have known to switch out gaskets and upgrade the rods/bearings?

Based on my understanding of this build, that's not the issue.  If I'm correct, DenaliX14 sourced this big ass engine and most of the trimmings himself after the 6.2 blew up.  On the gasket, all that happened was he spaced having to order a new one.

 

Like the man said, this is very much an owner driven build.  It started with a stock engine, about 5 years into its life if my math serves me, and along the way our friend decides he wants to be doing wheelies in the truck on 495, so up up up goes the power.  He was trying for 800 wheel, which means 1000 at the crank.  Nobody KNOWS what's going to happen at that power level.  Anybody can second guess after something went wrong, but the shop wasn't the only one driving the build, and forum information is no substitute for actual performance work experience, which I assure you this shop has in spades.

 

Ask questions by all means, but anybody who would take a shot at this shop's experience, knowledge and professionalism is off base.  I've had nothing but good experiences with them.

It's and awesome and expensive build. I have the 5.3 and was debating if it is worth throwing a blower on it. I wish my truck came with the 6.2l though I still love what I have, it had been reliable.

In 2014 there was a thread on this site about installing blowers on a 5.3 and 6.2. Lingenfelter I believe stated 50 HP difference between the two with a blower. The reason was the 6.2 was tuned to run on premium stock leaving less tuning with a blower. Make sense since using E-85 on a stock 5.3 gets you within 40 HP in stock comparison.

I still haven't had a chance to speak with James at GSD about the details but he quoted me at $6700 for the turbo install.

there are tons of vettes and camaros at that power level. The l86 is internally identical to the lt1. So, some people do actually know what’s going to happen at that power level.


Dunno, sounds more like to me the shop is a bunch of nice guys trying their best and the owner is being too nice to them even though their best isn’t good enough.

I'm curious as to your expertise on this matter.  In your opinion, how many years of lurking on truck forums equals one year of professional wrenching?

Easiest is to check out my build page  - It's short, and the turbo build starts the middle of page 1.  Still need to update with my new wheels/tires.

 

I'm thrilled with the results.  I'm have a 5.3 and had some minor bolt-ons and a a remote tune...  dyno-ed at 318whp before the turbo.  450Whp and 490wt after.  It's a monster.  The only downside is turbo lag in comparison to a supercharger, but you can turn the power up higher with a turbo.

    • Hey guys, sorry for the confusison about this. This wasn't my experainnce, it was copied and pasted fom the net. 
    • The problem with failure rates or increase failures are there’s people who don’t have a problem. What are you doing wrong they say. We had 4 5.7 GM diesel’s in the family when they came out. One was flawless. My uncle who happened to be the most abusive. Early rotary engines were known to use oil. I abused my first car so bad in six months I replaced the clutch, transmission and rear end. It didn’t use oil. My brother in law has a 2013 Tahoe and an older Yukon. The Yukon has 280K miles. The Tahoe around 175K. He runs them to about 300K. If his lifters fail before that time he would consider it a failure. My Hondas, I know people hate it when I mention them. Identical engines. One with cylinder deactivation one doesn’t have it. One shudders when the eco light goes on or off. Cylinder deactivation. But wait! According to the web. It can happen with lock up too. So now people in the know are changing the oil and transmission fluid more often. Then you read it could be a programing issue. So what do you do? There’s lots of money involved. I see three ways to deal with it. One only works if you don’t drive lots of miles. Lease, never get out of warranty. Or only buy older vehicles with a good track record. They all have bad runs. Usually when there’s a change. Even Toyota and Honda. 
    • Question @diyer2 on this line if you please. Are you saying the shudder is the system turning on and off at the frequency of the shudder? Guess I'm asking if you are saying you have seen it do this with the bi-direction scan tool in graph mode? If so have you been able to discern the 'trigger'. Something is telling to cycle rapidly.    My truck just started doing this recently. 197K on the clock. My response has been M5 anything under 55 mph. I treat it like a lugging stick shift. Gear down and let it spin a bit. Engauge M5, then tow mode and then M6 lets the trans stay in 5th but the AFM is active. Smooth like Skippy.    My thought was that as a machine ages the friction gets lower and as the system is load based, the lower friction would allow it to turn on at ever lower rpm until it reaches the lugging point. And yes I am ignorant of any minimum rpm requirement for the system. If you know that would be useful information.    As you know I run a Scan-Gauge II which allows me to watch the On/Off of the signal to the VLOM. While in the shudder mode I'm not seeing is cycle at that frequency or at all for that matter outside the triggers @newdude posted a few years back. Now is it possible that the refresh rate isn't fast enough to catch it? Maybe. It is why I asked my first question about graphing and trigging parameter.     As we have observed from members here the failure point is all over the map miles wise as you note yourself in your opening post. That by itself begs a few questions like fellows that comment on these lifters failing even after the system has been disabled.     • UPDATE 2: Steering wheel control backlights and control of the cluster can supposedly be achieved by adding a wire to pin 20 of the cluster and tapping it to pin 2 of the main clock spring harness. I'm going to give it a shot - will update  
    • GM Global A pickups 2019-2022 can do OTA programming for the radio.  GM VIP (GM Global B) can do OTAs for almost every module on board.  So a 2022.5 and newer pickup can do OTAs for recalls like the 2.7 fuel flow recall.  EVs get OTAs that improve one pedal driving, radio issues, HVAC issues, updated battery management software, etc.     So age of the vehicle/what GM electrical platform its on will alter what amount of updates can be pushed on OTAs.
