I was under my truck this am looking at the flapper exhaust valve and noticed my drive shaft sitting there. It appears marked, and there's what looks like a spot welded on weight on it, and well as the yoke or what ever it is that the shaft slides into before going into the rear end. It appears there was some effort there to balance the shaft and the yoke. I also can now see the ripples in the sidewalls of the tires and you can really feel them when you run your had on them. I think these GY tires are junk and are likely the cause of all my vibration issues. Here's a pic of the shaft and yoke. I also see a "made in Canada" stamp under there...how can we tell where these trucks were made? Can you tel by the VIN? Also, cant really tell but my drive shaft appears to be steel and not aluminum but I'm not really sure on that. My truck was made in Dec 13.

The sticker inside your driver door will tell you the build location of your truck. Your drive shaft definitely looks different than mine. Mine is silver, which I guess means it's aluminum. Build date on mine is September 2013 in Mexico. After seeing some of the vibration videos posted here I can say my truck definitely does not exhibit that kind of a heavy vibration. Just a slight vibration/shake in the steering wheel that I think is tire related as well.

Just checked the inside of my door and it says "Fort Wayne Assembled"...so 'm guessing my truck was made in Fort Wayne..Iowa? Like I said, I have the Fort Wayne sticker, and underneath there's a Canda sticker so my tuck is either made here or there. From what I can determine, there are welded on weights so it seems things were balanced and assembled correctly. I'm getting a lot closer to biting the bullet and buying new tires. My gut thinks that's the sorce of a lot of people's problems.

 

I agree...my vibration is nothing like that video that was posted...that's pretty rough!

Yeah I'm back and forth between trying to work with the dealer for new tires or just spending the money on something nice like Michelins that I think will fix the problem. It's just tough to swallow the idea of buying tires on a new vehicle with only 3,500 miles. If I decide to buy tires though I'm going to wait until the winter and then get some all terrains. I figure at least wear these crappy ones out a little longer while the ride is tolerable and save a little money at least.

I took mine in to the dealer to have the tires balanced. It seems to have helped a little but I really think theses OEM tires are very poor quality. Service guy said they would consider swappping the tires out for a set of Michelins but I have to pay the cost difference and mileage for the GY's which now have around 11k. I can straight out buy a set of Michelins for around 1100 They are supposed to call me back in the next couple of days to let me know how much. If it is around 1/2 the cost of a new set I am going to do that I think. The GY's are getting worse as they get mileage on them. I understand this is a truck and maybe should not ride like a Big Ole Cadillac but man why should it beat you up when driving it especially since the sticker was over 50k!!!!!!! 2014 Sierra SLT CC Z71 4x4 20in wheels... Worst thing I have noticed is the GY's seem to flat spot if they sit for a few days they are really rough (feels like a SQUARE tire LOL) for the first 5 to ten miles until they warm up then they get slightly better.

That flat spot feeling is the same reason I changed from Continentals to Michelin. All great now.

I have the Bridgestone duelers LT rated tires on my truck . No issues at all. Seems like a lot of issues with the goodyears ?

Here's an update on my truck.

 

I had the vibration around 35-50 mph, especially during coasting/deceleration.

The dealer originally told me it was due to the AFM switching from V8 to V4 mode.

They also blamed the Bridgestone LT tires that I had replaced the Goodyears with.

 

On the second visit, I explained to them that when the transmission was left in M5 mode, it had the same 35-50mph vibration even though the AFM stayed in V8 mode.

The shop foreman then claimed they couldn't troubleshoot it anymore because of the LT tires.

After some heated discussions, the shop foreman walking away & refusing to work on my truck, and me discussing with the service manager that I wanted to speak to the regional service rep and the dealership manager, they decided they would look at it again.

 

Overall, they had the truck for over two weeks on this second visit and, according to the service report, this is what they did:

Swapped tires with FIVE other trucks.

Swapped prop shaft with another truck.

Found rear end ring & pinion was 0.001" out of spec.

Installed new ring & pinion.

 

I picked up the truck last Tuesday and have put about 500 miles on it since.

The 35-50 mph vibration is gone.

Highway speeds seem to be pretty smooth.

Again, I do have LT tires on it so I do feel the road a bit, but I can't complain about that.

 

Overall, I wasn't happy about the process I had to go through to get this taken care of, but, as of today, I am satisfied that the issue is gone.

Just thought I'd post a success story on here; doesn't seem to be many of them.

What was your trucks build date? Mine was assembled July 2013 in Ft. Wayne, Indiana , and I have similar vibrations (3.08 gears). Perhaps this is where my problem is also. Did they reinstall your original prop shaft?

Mine never got fixed and when my original sales man blew me off for asking about GM Buyback and Lemon Law info I left and picked this up.....

The 5.0L would have been the better engine choice, but whatever. This makes you number 9 on the "trade my new 2014 gm for the competition list" that I know of. Brutal!

    • Yes. You need to check out that thing, and the hub further.

    • If everything checks out at the MAF, then the MAF is BAD, new or not.   You don't need a signal generator to troubleshoot this. PCM needs ALL powers and ALL grounds able to light a halogen headlight bulb - if it can light the bulb bright, then the wiring is good enough to run the PCM.   Best thing you can do for yourself is spend some time here: scannerdanner.com - Check out all his YouTube videos on similar issues. If you decide to subscribe it's the best bang-for-buck ratio in the automotive world, hands-down. He's got TONS of free vids on YouTube, too.
    • Yes, I used my multimeter to probe all of the wires at the MAF, both with the sensor connected, sensor disconnected, key on engine off, key on engine running, etc etc etc. I probed all of the wires again at the PCM, at the connectors, etc. All voltages are what they should be according to the service manual/wiring diagrams. All grounds are good, less than 20 millivolts from the battery negative under load. Both at the connector of the MAF, at the PCM connector etc.      I know this throws a pretty big wrench into things, but this truck was acting up before the swap. I don't have very much information, if any on what was causing it, but if you cleared all of the dtcs it would do the same thing where it would crank, fire, then die. And it would do the same thing a dozen or so times, and eventually it would start and run, but the difference is that it would run and actually be drivable. Whereas now if you can drive it at all, it goes into reduced power mode almost immediately, and even then it's not running correctly. When you come to a stop at a light it stumbles down to for 500 RPM before catching itself and returning to the smooth idle. And if you go more than about 50% throttle then it immediately goes back to doing the misfire thing.    Like I said, I know that throws a wrench into things, and unfortunately I was not able to pull any data or anything like that before I did this work, so I don't have much to go on.    I'm trying to not fixate on one particular thing as the cause of the problem, but it seems like all avenues are pointing me towards the PCM. Like I said I have tested the wiring extensively (see above), and during cranking the sensor does produce seemingly legitimate values at least according to my multimeter, but as soon as the engine fires those values quickly descend into gibberish. I've tried it with multiple different known working sensors, I have done literally every test I can think of multiple times on the wiring (probing the signals, probing the pins with the sensors unplugged, probing the pins at the PCM, voltage drop, voltage drop under load, continuity, ohms, and double-checking everything against the wiring diagrams/ proper values in the service data.)    Another thing that pushes me towards a possible PCM failure is, I have noticed in troubleshooting a little bit taking a break and coming back, that when I leave the truck to sit for a while and cool off, it starts and runs smoothly when I first start it up. However once it warms up. It starts having problems. For example, when I went out to the truck this morning after it had been sitting overnight, I was actually able to drive it down the block. And then once I got on the throttle a Little bit after going about a thousand ft, it started misfiring again. I pulled it back into the driveway, shut it down, and started it back up. It idled smoothly. As soon as I touched the throttle it did the misfire thing again. From then on as soon as I started it it would misfire. I shut the truck off and went to go get a coffee and do a bit more research. When I came back out I started the truck up and it immediately went into the smooth idle. After a couple of minutes of playing around with it, it would not idle smoothly anymore. Let it sit a couple of hours, rinse and repeat. This makes me think with temperature change something is going wrong inside the PCM. I have the PCM out of the 2007 donor vehicle and I'm thinking of getting a one-day subscription to the ACDelco programming service to try and program that and see if it helps.   Like I said, I'm really trying to not fixate myself on one potential cause, but it seems everything is pointing me towards PCM failure. I would really like to try to confirm that, but unfortunately I don't have an oscilloscope or a signal generator to do the GM service procedure where you feed 5 khz into the signal pin.
