The problem isn't in the tires,driveshaft,or rear diff. Its in the engine management system.. Go to the display on the dash where it shows when it goes from v4 to v8 and watch the magic happen. The vibrations start when the trans is in to high of a gear and the management system that's supposed to "save fuel" goes to v4 and then the truck acts like a stick shift that's in 5th gear at 20 miles an hour.... My truck is a week old and I don't want it anymore cause of this.. Happens both at high and low speeds... 40k for a truck that's unpleasant to drive... Thanks gm... So there ya go general motors.. I'm not a engineer just a a.s.e. certified mechanic that just solved ur problem.. Sorry if I seem cocky or upset but unless you "gm" either buys back my vehicle or fixes it within the next week then this is the response you will get from me. A dedicated gm owner since I could drive.. But those tundras are looking really good right about now...feel free to contact me gm representative on my cell to help me resolve my issue with my new truck 219-588-5002.. Thanks

You are absolutely correct with your diagnosis .... That's why I run M5 when I am driving 50 mph or less. If I am on the highway cruising at 70-75 mph and v4 kicks in, its works fine. I had a 2012 Ram 5.7 with a 6 speed trans and it did the same exact thing ... Had to keep that in M5 when driving city ... When it went into v4 at 45 mph the whole truck would start to vibrate ... AFM just is not perfected yet IMO.

Ur right I probably won't be contacted but I WILL contact corporate and be a thorn in there side until this is resolved.

All I have to say is look up your states lemon laws. The BBB is your friend in this situation and be polite with them. They are there to help you.

I tried putting it in m6 at 75, keeping it out of v4 mode when I was having the vibration issue, mine still vibrated. The dealer put a vibration analysis device in my truck, and said the frequencies matched tire speed. They installed 4 brand new Michelin tires, vibration gone... Well for 5,000 miles anyway, then it came back. Every time they did something with my tires (rf balance) replaced 2 good years, then installed the Michelin's, the vibration would go away, then come back. I took it upon myself to upgrade, and installed nitto LT305/55/20, Vibration has been gone for over 15,000 miles now. There may be another problem, but for me the tires corrected my ride issues.

Putting it into m6 will make it go into v4 mode.

I had the cruise set at 75, shifted down to m mode, think it dropped to m4, then went to m5, then m6, the vibration was still present in every gear. Been a while, so jogging my memory a bit. I even dragged my foot on the brake, and gave more gas to put a heavier load on to see if it would change. My experience was tires changed it. What I found strange was sometimes it was more noticeable than others, on the same stretch of highway, that led me to believe it wasn't a mechanical issue, to me a bad drive shaft, or rear diff, or trans, or engine mount, the vib would be consistent all the time

This statement posted by STAYBG is not true for my truck… I have the same vib issues that everyone here has described within this thread. The V4 mode is not the culprit. I have the Range deactivation module, which keeps the truck in V8 mode all the time. The vibration issue in my truck are still there in V8 mode.

 

I have not tried to correct my vib issues yet because I'm afraid that I will just go thru the same run-around with the dealer and GM that everyone else has gone thru… not worth my time right now. But I do have a troubleshooting strategy that someone can try if you have access to the proper tools:

 

1. Run the back tires on a dyno wheel at all speeds. This can help to confirm/eliminate the possibility of small road imperfections that some people have mentioned could be transmitted to the seat, floorboard, and steering wheel.

2. If the issue is still there, then change rims and tires.

3. Disconnect the rear driveshaft, and run only the front tires on the dyno in 4WD mode as mentioned in steps 1 and 2.

4. Now do steps 1, 2, and 3 except this time not on a dyno, but on a lift. This will eliminate vibrations from road imperfections, possible flat spots on the tire, and drive shaft angle.

 

If any of these conditions make the vibration go away, then we know it isn't in the shaft angles, rear end, motor mounts, transmission. This may not solve the problem, but can help to eliminate some proposed culprits.

This statement posted by STAYBG is not true for my truck… I have the same vib issues that everyone here has described within this thread. The V4 mode is not the culprit. I have the Range deactivation module, which keeps the truck in V8 mode all the time. The vibration issue in my truck are still there in V8 mode.

please do tell more about this range deactivation module... Any change in gas mileage?and codes?good warranty?

Keeping it in V8 mode has dropped my average gas mileage by only 1/2 mile per gallon… not an issue for me.

Keeps in in V8 mode at all times… which I like.

This module does not leave any footprints in your computer… so it won't affect factory warranty.

I had some problems initially with it causing some false codes to show up… but I believe they have fixed it for 2014-2015 trucks.

So far it has been running fine with no codes… time will tell.

WARNING… do not leave the device plugged in for more than 3-4 days without starting your truck… it will drain your battery.

 

My only issue with the truck is the bad vibrations that no one can fix.

I have a range module and love it. I didn't notice any mileage difference. A must if you have an aftermarket exhaust as well. Keeps it from having that awful V4 drone. I've left mine in for 4 days and haven't had any battery issues. I haven't heard any codes or issues with the new '14 module.

oh noes! I just bought my 2014 Chevy Silverado LT Z71 2WD on Oct 24.

For new years I drove from Atlanta to Fort Lauder a 1100 mile ride 1 way. It was only during the trip that i noticed my center console vibrating violently enough to startle me as my drink kept splashing around. I had just stopped to grab a combo meal and the lid shook right off my drink. At first I thought it was the road i was on, but realized the truck would vibrate between 77 and 83 miles per hour.
Was on vaca for a week without my laptop and figured I would do a search when I got home. My 1100 mile ride back from Fort Lauderdale the truck did the same thing. I was worried that the vibration would losen my passenger seat or rear view mirror or something else.

So here I am home after a hard days work to look up what I think is bullsht and find this thread with over 3800 posts!! not to mention the other threads in this forum alone discussing the issue.
I just paid over 40,000 dollars for this truck! WTF! OMG! I cant even read this anymore.

"It is not wheel balancing. We have had several of 2014 trucks with vibrations, both Chevy and GMC. One of our technicians found the teeth on the ring gear in the differential were different lengths. Supposedly fixed a few. Mine vibrates like crazy. I can feel it the instant I hit the gas and different speeds as high as 85 mph. I haven't had mine done yet as I don't want to throw parts at it.

There are a lot of trucks with this issue. Not sure if the ring gear is really the issue. If it is, they better do something about it. Either a service campaign, or recall. My double cab was less than 500 units in production at Fort Wayne and the assembly quality has been horse $hit. It should never have left the factory with the issues my truck has. Many of them are because of poor assembly. My truck makes me embarrassed for anyone who works there."

"Problems at assy plants with new vehicles: The tires spin on the wheels AFTER assy and being driven. The lube is still wet and allows the tire to slip...noticed more with the chrome 20" and 22" wheels. Get them balanced again. Drive shaft u-joints not pressed in correctly so you get vibes at certain speeds."

so after all of this - why not a class action lawsuit? I have seen enough ppl with this truck and enough posting to know that this is a defect in the product.

 

With everyone filing with the BBB ( which I haven't done - I haven't even gone to chevy yet as I am just reading this thread, I will most likely try to have my tires balanced and the gears, drive shaft, rear assembly addressed first but.. ) We probably should get a list together of members and reach out to anyone across the internet, forums, youtube, etc.. that has the same issue. Once we have about 100 or 1000 ppl, we stop complaining, meet up over the net somewhere, put together some money, get a high priced lawyer and sue as a group for class action and for a repair to our problem. The worst case scenario the government ( that bailed them out ) catches wind of this and takes up our case as a cause for a recall.

In future I can see this truck vibrating all the parts off. Chairs, Rear view mirrors, handles, etc... Its that bad. We need someone to set up a site and to post a link everywhere on the forum. The site should be ONLY about the vibration problems. The site asks for year model, cab style, gear ratio, 2wd or 4wd, length of cab, miles, at which miles it vibrates, make model of tires, aftermarket accessories so we can get a bead of what is really going on. Then submit it to GM. If they fail to honor the problem like a respectable American company. We all put in, get us one of those hollywood, newyork or washington lawyers to file a class action on a defective problem. Hell we paid mostly +40,000 each for it. They are not going to stick it to me.

First I am going to the dealer just to see if they will fix it with good faith. If they do not....... The entire truck buying market will hear this pain backed up by.... Forum owner. My email information is my private information. If GM tries to contact you about me - deny. I am going to try to resolve this the correct way. Then we will see, but like all of you. I feel that as a man I have been taken advantage of at the tune of 40,000 U.S. dollars. That doesn't sit with me AT ALL and I am not going to let this slide.

if need be we are about to unite and MAKE this problem go away. The longer we wait to bring this to light the easier it will be for GM to deny there is a problem or say it is a know issue with their older models. Not here playa

We need someone to set up a site and to post a link everywhere on the forum. The site should be ONLY about the vibration problems. The site asks for year model, cab style, gear ratio, 2wd or 4wd, length of cab, miles, at which miles it vibrates, make model of tires, aftermarket accessories so we can get a bead of what is really going on.
I was chatting with someone else who also has this issue and a site should hit the net in the next few day's ! :fingersx:

are there any GM reps out there reviewing this 266 page thread that can offer any support or words of wisdom?? Something more definitive than just, "Sorry about your problems, please feel free to contact your dealer for assistance."

 

This thread is obviously a substantive concern that GM should be aware about at the top floor in Detroit.

Today will be my first attempt at the shake vibration as I'm starting to really feel it in the floor board.

Still my number 1 complaint is the tune on this thing in low speed driving like 10-15 mph crawl

    • Thanks - I wasn't quite caffeinated this morning. 2:1 makes sense, turning the crankshaft 360 degrees will turn the cam 180 degrees, and had I done that, the cam's dot would be at 6 and the crank's at 12 again.   I went ahead and took the sprocket off anyway, aligned everything dot-to-dot including the balance shaft just for s&g. I'm glad I did because I discovered no Loctite on the timing sprocket bolts. Maybe it's not required, but at only 20 ft-lb torque spec, those bolts aren't in there very tight. Cleaned and reassembled with some thread locker and torqued.   A general observation: Less is more with RTV. If a little doesn't stop a leak, a LOT probably won't, either. RTV is thinly veiled revenge, in a tube...      
    • The timing marks are ok, that is #1, you can turn it over until they line up and it won't change anything, the crankshaft turns twice for every camshaft revolution, I have always set up SB Chevs as your pic shows using a straight edge
    • Someone's been here before.... There is a receipt for a 3-piece timing set, purchased earlier this year.   Is this picture something, or, nothing?   I have the timing cover off and my crank is perfectly TDC and the keyed gear's locating mark is dead on 12 o'clock.   The cam gear locating mark is also at 12 o'clock. Now, I'm not an expert, but all the install guides say the two locating marks should meet and be perfectly aligned when installing a timing set. The mark on the crank should be dead on 12:00 and the cam gear's mark should be dead on 6:00, and both marks should be perfectly vertically aligned.   I believe the timing gear is keyed or has a dowel that ensures it can only be installed on the cam in one position, so I have to believe the cam is out of phase somehow. At the very least, with a triangular bolt pattern, it can only be installed in one of 3 different positions.   Before I pulled the front cover, the truck was running alright, no service engine soon lights except an occasional P0172 / rich condition. Timing -16 timing at idle (should be +16), and total -35% fuel trim, two conditions I haven't been able to figure out.   In related news, my injector tested pretty well, wasn't leaking, but I had it rebuilt anyway, and it's on it's way back to me.         Along with this discovery, the good and bad:   Good: The oil pan seal appears undamaged.   Bad: -The timing cover has been reused, and the positioning dowels have been broken. That could explain some of the leaking. -Some kind of white paste or grease was used to try to seal the oil pan seal and timing cover (since wiped off..). -Then, someone globbed silicone all over the front of the cover and also buried the ckp sensor in it. But, they didn't put any inside the cover or use RTV to try to seal the oil pan seal with the timing cover (good).
    • The guy that owns K&P filters last I checked in with him has over 300,000 miles on his Dodge base Hemi using his own 35 micron absolute stainless mesh filter from its first oil change.    The GM study I've posted a dozen times shows the relationship in engine life based in multiples of base units, not miles or years. That is the base unit is the number of miles the motor ran using the reference filter efficiency.    The above two paragraphs dismantle anecdotal arguments IF one changes oil often enough to prevent particle formation and the motor is in otherwise good shape. That is not full of silica (no air filter) or suffering a metallurgical issue that is not part of the lubrication discussion. Poor heat treat in example.   Data from UOA's I've reviewed from more than a few engines can show remarkably broad variations in oil cleanliness using the exact same filter over the course of an engines life.     Lastly there is the common sense of it. Wear debris WILL circulate the engine BEFORE it ever sees a filter in route to that filter and WILL harm the pump which NEVER sees filtered oil.    Alpha question then becomes, given the facts, how long do you believe is a reasonable service life from a vehicle you are certain you will not pass down? That is the junk yard will be it's resting place when you're done with it? (the moral issue most don't care about).    Omega question is then how diligent are you prepared to be in general mechanical, air & oil maintenance? Preventing particulates and keeping them sufficiently dilute; preventing the precursors from generation, amalgamation and precipitation.    If I get a good look at the engine bay of a vehicle I have a fair idea of the owners commitment to the inside of the power train. That 30 micron WIX is still more efficient than a sieve.                 
    • It also depends on what criteria someone is using for “best” when talking filters.  Are we going off best efficiency?   Best quality/QC?  Etc. because the two may not mutually exclusive.
